Huh, well you actually seem like you are already pretty good at drawing. It is not professional quality though so I wouldn't imagine you'd be able to get a job just yet.

The advice I would give to you is the same I would give to anyone, try copying more. Draw from life, copy photographs and artwork. Copy images out of an anatomy book. Just draw from reference until you are perfect at it, then try drawing from imagination. If copying things doesn’t improve your skills then chances are nothing will.

Uh, I did think your mechanical designs were fairly convincing. I think you have enough talent to become skilled enough to work as an artist if you put in enough smart effort. Good luck!

Thanks a ton...I have drawn from my imagination since I could hold a pencil and have done a little still life. I am just beginning to draw from references and the results have been magnificent. Looking forward to getting some anatomy books...

The next Installment. I have some real concpet art up and I want any ideas to make these more readable to modellers.

This art is for a game thats based entirely in space. The ships are supposed to be as close to likely developements in military space craft. Slopping armor, mulitiple engines, defense from all angles...etc. The universe is based entirely in a non energy weapon universe. So massdrivers and missles al the way.

Some good work. Forms are tight. Keep at your values. I'd like to see you loosen up. Keep on.

I really like the ship... though (and i'm making an assumption that it is a human ship) it looks a little... biological. which i like a great deal, just doesn't seem like a human quality. My fav is that it's assymetrical. we need more of that! can't wait to see more renders of ships.

Hey ConCrete, some good work you got here!
As said above you could try be a little bit more loose, esspecially in your figures. Some look a bit stiff.
The horse man! that one is just beautiful!
Cheers!

Concept art is just a narrow subset of illustration, you know. Learn the skills to become an illustrator, and you will have a wide array of possible careers available to you.

Up to this point I had very little feedback and the comments recently up are really really good. Maintaining this is finally paying off, thank you so much for your feedback...

Another rougher concept for a ship...

on your warrior his arm is strangley positioned.. if you ever think one of your character's poses look a little off try it for yourself. i tried to position my arm like that and it hurts quite a bit..

here are some more realistic positions

Hey concrete, nice sketchbook man.Your also posting your DSG stuff here, nice! Would like to see sketches, practice runs and stuff like that.
Bit of crit on the eagle warrior, his left arm looks wierd, at an odd angle the way it is now sort of sticks out of his back.

Bit of crit on the eagle warrior, his left arm looks wierd, at an odd angle the way it is now sort of sticks out of his back.

I was going for some crazy foreshortening as if his arm was extended almost directly back away from the veiwer. But the line is too dark and the rest of the piece is at reletivley the same depth so its not quite there...
I tried to hold the position of the eagle warrior and found that the arm should be more forward and the elbow bent...great advice KanoaRogers.

Wow...thank you for all the feedabck...it motivates me when I need it and keeps me focused when I am astray...

Been working hard...and messing aorund...and being happy and sad with whats going on. Some traditional and some crazy stuff. These are 20 minute sketches form a model and some concept for a painting I might be trying to do digital eventually. Not liking the concept, I wanted to go in a render the guns but I had to keep pulling back and 'assuming'. Some thing with the back ground, tried to stay away form detail and just abreviate what I wanted to draw.

So. Full blown cable internet and a cheap scanner and I am ready to get my crit on...This is first installment of many. Please be mean, I have little pride and am in dire need of real opinion and critique...

My objective: become a concept artist...so please gear crits towards not only artistic means but also the concept side of things...I want easy reads and obvious portrayal of my information...I want dynamic characters an indsutry quality ligthing mood etc. etc. So please cut me APART!

I have been making some serious progress, I have watercolors, acrylics and all sorts of sketch work to post but not the time to get it up. Graduate in a year, then into the illustration market, yikes. But I feel good, not as good as I should, but good enough to build a portfolio I would be able to bear, and bare. HA.

A character from an ongoing set of drawing I am working on from a personally designed universe. Jerrod, during his transformation to Night After Night.

I just checked out the best of CA...omg, I feel like I got kicked in the nuts. I work so hard and try so hard and whew, sometimes it sucks and you feel like you have wasted a bunch of your life drawing.

I have something to shoot for now. I will dissect those paintings like none other...ohhh yeah, nothing like being motivated by the dark side.

arg jesus christ, just did like a 2000 word crit then clicked the back button on my mouse by mistake!

well... shit.

the crux of it was...

great improvements!

try to apply those dynamic poses from your figure studies, to your concept characters.

try placing a frame around your characters, to force yourself to think about the flow/direction of lines and focal points. you may have to take small liberties in the anatomy, or change the angle/pose, but you want the whole picture to seem as natural/believable as possible (i view concept art as trying to make the impossible seem plausable).

essentially dynamic poses are just composition within the figure.

getting away from composition though (kinda), poses can help communicate alot about the character/concept.

for example your orcs gun is frickin humungus, but the pose doesnt make sense in relation to it. he should be bending forward a bit to make the gun feel heavy to the viewer, especially since how its strapped, it would push pretty hard on his stomach. or you could push that 'effect' further by having him holding it up, but still showing the strap taking weight too. (if you did that you would have to make his stance wider too, which is why it pays to think about this stuff first)

at the moment the gun really looks like an after thought, or at least the scale of it does, and its detracting from the rest of the picture.

i would almost say your improving too quickly for your own good, but that could just be jelousy talking ;)

Thanks for the crits. My dynamic poses have been under the laser gun of my attention lately, so I am glad you referred to them as dynamic. Its so hard to really push the limit when I have so much work to do on foreshortening and what not. Anyway some sketches I have been doodling. A bedouin from a photo and some head/ expression studies. THe last two are with a loose reference.

So much stuff I am going to be putting up from the semester. This has been a renaissance semester for me. Learned so very much. Practiced so very much. I can honestly take myself seriously now more than ever. So much work to do. And I am in the thick of it. Nights like tonight make me feel great 'n junk.

I will be getting all of it professional photographed in a studio sometime mid January (for free) and then getting it all up in a bunch. Traditional painting. Tons of drawings, some good some bad. But it is all going up.

Hi mate, great work, may I say that you're very skilled and that you can render in a very sweet fashion. I would like to see more drawings tough, I was wondering if perhaps you were somehow hiding some flows in your natural rendering skills.
