LOL! Fun doodles you’ve got here.

What you’ve posted so far is going off in about half a dozen directions. It might be helpful in getting critiques for your sketchbook if you state a specific goal here, and then work towards that goal.

Cheers!

Thanks Seedling, you've got a point there. I just, admittedly thoughtless and without a real goal, dumped some recent RealLife™ sketchbook page in here. I guess I'm working on many fronts at the same time. I always have.

cool inks, really like the lynx and the mobsters. A little hard to tell whats going on in the last one, but well executed none the less. Keep it up!

idle.
December 20th, 2006, 10:18 AM
Thanks, Goog. The last one shows a whale stuck in between tree trunks. It's actually the first time I've ever done a litho. That's mainly the reason behind the somewhat experimental and abstract looks of it.

More stuff. Doodles done during work or idle time. I'm having lots of fun lately putting blotches of color on the pages and then trying to figure out what it could be. The previously shown yellow (ginger-pumpkin soup) fishes, the pink (water on post-it notes) dog and the brown (coffee) dog all came to live this way. I'm also happy that I seem to be making some progress with inking and line-art in that regard. Using thicker brush strokes for shadows and the thinner ones for light...

Thanks for the words. Jeff, I don't when the litho will be finished but I hope some time soon. The comic is finished and hopefully on wednesday I can't pick up working on that one again.

Here the various stages of the comic I made today and yesterday for the currently running Fumetto Festival competition. The theme this year is "future". I am sorry for the shitty picture at the end but I didn't have anymore time left for scanning.

Some more concept designs for the previously mentioned cellphone game. After a bit of thinking and doodling I have finally come up with a "suitable" story outline for the whole game.

Since this is a network game where multiple cellphones join to create one I needed to come up with something that would pick up on that particular aspect. The basic idea of the programming is something along the line of these games you play on kids birthday parties where all gather around a circle of chairs whereas the number of kids outnumber the chairs by one (here in Germany this game is called "Journey to Jerusalem" or sometimes a bit more simple "Chair Dance") . Then everybody starts moving around the chairs and as soon as the music is stopped the goal is to catch a chair for sitting. Of course one of the kids won't get one and is thus out of the game. After that the number of chairs is reduced by one again. Here in Germany this game is called "Journey to Jerusalem" or sometimes a bit more simple "Chair Dance".

The cellphone variant works similarly. After every participant has joined the game the number of players will be reduced after every round until only one remains. My idea for the *cough* storyline *cough* is a bunch of cute alien-cyborg-pirates binge-drinking until the last man or woman remains conscious. The fun part would be to play this in reality at your local pub with the outcome probably being negative reciprocal (meaning that the longer you remain in the game the more you run the risk of actually disappearing under the table at first).

Following are a few sketches, animatic and other experiments to get a feeling for the looks and everything. In the end there will be two male and two female characters to choose as avatars.

And lastly because I couldn't get enough another coffee blotch exploitation. I think I'm going to resize, blow-up and the lithographically print that priate grrrl.

just read your comment in my book and remembered that I actually had more to say about your stuff (lazy me ^^ )

I told you I like your sketches and drawings a lot. I see that you like to go wild (like the last two pages) and that you are able to produce clean ink pages (so basically control and chaos, thats what makes painting fun). Now the thing I really want to see from you are paintings or speedpaintings (think of ashley wood). Because right now those small sketches are right in your comfortzone. Break out of it and do something like that (http://www.idleware.com/images/sketches/sketches075.jpg) with oils/acrylics/digital. I think your ideas could have a bigger impact on the viewer that way.
When I scroll up and down this (http://www.idleware.com/images/illustrations/schutzengel.jpg) is catching my eye everytime.

Hey all, here is a little update. Not much though as I've been busy with the previously mentioned game and a new custom painted vinyl toy for a show in Bristol, UK. Hopefully I will have a bit more time for silly experiments in the near future.

Flaskpost, thanks for the kind words.

Zak, much thanks for your critique. I have kept your words in my head and although the following sketches are not quite what they suggest I will definitely do some speed stuff more soonish.

One thing I always wanted to know: how do you get such nice, clean, long lines while still having full control of lineweight? Is every single line done with one single stroke or are you planning them carefully? Also: what pen are you using for these?

Hmm, Zaknafain, let me start what it is not. It is not pen work but good old traditional brush and ink. I've been using fine line pens for a long time but just recently switched to brush. I must admit though that I have a basic sketch beneath it and sometimes I have to work on some lines twice to give it the right weight. Generally it is quite possible to do this all with one single precise stroke. I'm still working on that...

The only real downside to brush and ink is portability. Then again, there are brush pens by Pentel which where designed for calligraphy but work quite well for other ink jobs, too. Some people prefer these over the traditional way but in my opinion regular brushes give you more control over lineweight. Another little thing that I dislike is that the ink used by Pentel is not always waterproof which can be a bitch if you like to colorize your stuff later...

Hope this helps. You can find Pentel products on the evil Bay, of course but also via Boesner or Gerstäcker.

;)

I like that spiderteddy a lot.. (whats his name? frank? ^^). he was worth your time for sure...

I don't know what the last pic is for (hello my name is frank) but the composition is odd (tangency problems, and everything seems uncomfortable, out of balance). If you have everything on separte layers, play around with the placement for some time. I'm sure you can find something better.
I could also nitpick on the last sketch (cowboys) that it has perspective problems... But yeah, its a sketch...

btw.. thanks a lot for the line explanation. I will spend some time with this.

Can you explain, please? Or maybe I should be a bit more descriptive? LOL.

This card (the one with "FRANK") is based on a sticker quite popular with graffiti artists and accompanies the munny figure (the one I customized above) to put a name to your custom. I must admit that the HMNI (Hello My Name Is) badge was created freehand on the fly and besides the layout of the font I haven't put much thought into it. This is merely a scan of the badge. The black starburst is actually silver meant to look a bit like an official seal. Still, I don't quite see the tangency?

yeah... that last one rocks! I like the fact that you decided to use colored lines as well. Sometimes black lines kill colorscemes. Can't happen when you use lines that way. I have to remember this trick...

The tangency I was talking about lies at the upper part of the "K" from "FRANK".
should stop to be so nitpicky but such things always catch my eye. Dunno why...

idle.
February 27th, 2007, 12:00 PM
Zak, thanks. It's not a really a tangency there in my book but rather an intersection but I realize it might be read like a tangency from further away and doesn't look to much like I really had the intention to have it there (although I did, lol). Oh well,...

Here is a little fella that I found inside a tin box of ginger tea. He ate all of it and let out a big burp when I unwrapped him. He must have been quite hungry.

Haven't been able to show this custom earlier although it is already about a month old. It has been on display in an exhibition about that long. I hope you enjoy it.

Every time you show up you look like a wabbit. Still, it's nice of you to drop by for a bit of chit chat." Milton is really a good friend of mine so he didn't really mind my little remark but with anybody else he would have probably stood up and left right away. He doesn't like to be called a wabbit. He finds it quite a bit offensive to be compared to a lowly rodent...

I like the last two thumbs. They create an interesting sense of tension. I would choose the right one because the left one is a bit unabalanced, falling to the left side. Are you going to paint one of them?

see you in kassel :)

Hey thanks, zak, I wasn't really thinking about painting these but it is a worthwhile thought. I think the left one feels unbalanced due to the background lines being horizontal. At least I can remember getting the feeling as I was putting these down.

Looking forward to having you as a guest in my little flat and of course here at the university.

Here are some more things. First some experiments with ink (grease and turpentine are involved as well. Following is the first of a series of pages I am working on currently that will hopefully be published soon in an art mag in Switzerland. One of my best friends, Sebastian Dürer, turned 22 today. The party was of course yesterday so we could celebrate this memorable day as soon as it began. Here is a little 2? customized labbit that I made for him. This was a completely spontaneous thing and it had to get done fast and thus I wasn’t able to give the über-perfect finish… Btw, the tatoo on the tummy of this little lady is a reference to the DJ Trio “Frau Mit Muskeln” I am active in.

Hey Y'all,

Originally I wanted to create something that looks like a piece of wood with a Bart Simpson face but somewhere on the way it turned out to be not such a great idea and thus I went along the rather cliché road of a tiki-festish-wooden-god-esque look of Bart. In the end I am happy with the result.

Yeah, you're right. *Sigh* I guess I am just a bit frustrated that I haven't drawn all too much in the last few weeks and it seems like ages that we've been at the Barracuda Bar having fun, eating stuff and doing doodles... I am excited and confused about what is waiting for us in Japan and it certainly isn't easy knowing that I will have to work until shortly before take off. I would have loved to take some time off trying to relax instead of having to go full throttle all the time. Just being here in Kiel, smelling the salty water of the Baltic Sea makes me feel less tense. I wish I could stay longer... *Phew* I needed to write that down. It's BBQ time now - a nice slab of meat is waiting for me... Merry instead of Sorry. ^_^ Thanks for your honest remark, you're completely right.

Thanks much, Zak. As always you're right. I will try to think of it the next time I keep a brush around. I actually carry my standard set of brushes with me most of the time but since these are no brush pens it is always a bit of a hassle to find some water and other stuff to clean them... Well, maybe I will be able to find some brush pens in Japan that suit my taste.

Thanks much for the good words, said and zak. Screentone can be fun if applied in little doses but it always takes so much time.

Oh and Philipp, unfortunately you won't be able to steal the artwork from Heavy Hitterz because it sold on the opening night. :D Yay.

You're sketchbook still is a lot of bizarro fun now I look back at it again. I like how you're handeling those brushes, smooth and thick like it comes alive. Those last studies are looking very good.

Whitevillage, thanks. I am trying to learn about gravity with those last studies and it's a nice way of passing time. Fat people are fun for stuff like that.

Here are some 10 second poses utilizing charcoal and posemaniac. From warm up this morning. Fun. The other three pages are character designs and pose studies for a little painted comic strip I am working on.

Here are some images of the progress on the comic strip. First is the storyboard and second are the pencils. The wooden board is primed and has now a base color of lovely orange. Sorry for the bad scan. I hope they're still illustrative enough to get the point across. The board is about 28 cm x 30 cm (11" x 12").

Thanks, jenzi and no, it's just for this little comic strip. Still, at one point I realized how cartoony this character was and I consequently decided to try for a different pose and emotion in every panel. Plus, I am a big fan of a lot of cartoons that were made in the 1920's and 1930's.

Here is the little progress I have made today.

http://www.idleware.com/images/comic/lovestrip_paint4.jpg

I don't expect to be able to show much more progress tomorrow let alone the rest of the week as I will be visiting the Comic Con in Erlangen, Germany and the weekend will be occupied by a gig with my DJ-Team in a club here in Kassel...

So, stay tuned for the finished version some time next week. 8)

Finally finished. I realized I need to start painting bigger pictures since this one is awfully small and fleshing out the details wasn't as much fun as it could have been. It also taught me that I need to learn to be more exact and precise when choosing colors. :)

entdroid, Flaskpost and Clochette thanks so much for your kind words. ^_^

So, I've finally turned in the application papers for my graduation which means that around the beginning of the next year I will be looking for jobs and other opportunities. My graduation project will consist of character design of 4 or more characters that will be modeled into toy figurines, packaging art and a short comic story for each of these characters. I will be documenting all of this as closely as possible. Here are my first few doodles for the robot character (excuse the bad scans):

I have say it and please don't take it the wrong way,you have a great sketchbook but I notice when it comes to drawing black people you make them out to be golliwogs and some folks might take offense to that. I know you a fan of the 1920-30's cartoon but the depiction of blacks in those where just plain wrong. Again I am not calling you racist or anything keep up the good work.

And Tobi, thanks. You're right. I should play around with that bit. even if it was just for a few character studies and poses. Actually though it's all part of my upcoming graduation as I am searching for character designs to turn into toys.

Sorry all for the lack of updates. My health hasn't been the best in the past weeks and it has completely demotivated me. Something that doesn't happen all to often and it's nothing I enjoy. But alas, I'm back in the saddle ready to crank out new drawings.

Hey zak, long time no see. Are you in Kassel? Or are you somewhere else?

IanE, thanks. And no, I don't mind sharing at all. The splatter effect is basically just acrylics. I've applied a few very thin and light strokes of dark red with brushes and cloth at first. After that the blotches are the same color but I just let the acrylics drip (or spray them with a tooth brush) on the board. Let them dry a bit but not completely and then wipe away the rest of the color still being wet.

Here is the line art for a drawing I'm doing for a contest. It's nothing big so the contest is more of an extra motivation to finish something. A Godzilla actor taking a lunch break with a mochi (sticky Japanese rice cake).

Update, yay.

Here are three covers I created for the iPhone eBook reader "Classics (http://classicsapp.com/)". Unfortunately I am not fortunate nor rich enough to afford one of these great gadgets to be able to test the app myself. Still, there is a lot of good word out there (LINK (http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/10/28/review-classics-lets-you-touch-your-books-on-your-iphone)). I am sure it deserves all the praise it gets — and that's not only because I made three covers for it. Hehehe.

In other news, the exhibition "Night Of The Living Artist" is about to end and if you still haven't made it to the Chicago Art Department you need to hurry. If you missed it, here is a nice overview but of course it doesn't do all the great artwork justice. LINK (http://plushinality.blogspot.com/2008/10/online-gallery.html)

I also redesigned my website. More minimal than before. Visit, if you like.
