Hi there,
This is my second bubble on CA.org here. :yayca: Why bubble? Because I'm a lifetime lurker.:P I don't even breathe here. :teeth: So to end this madness, I'm joining your guys with this bubble.
Here are some recent drawings. They are just plain ref. studies, no fancy concept yet, but I'm working on it (hopefully). You guys see anything off, please hit me. And please pardon my awkward English, I'm working on it, too. :teeth: (And I hope it's not too many pictures for one post.)
OK. I'll stop talking and get it rolling. I always talk way too much than needed. :blah: :blah: :blah:

wow! I welcome you and your bubble to CA!
lovely studies man, I especially dig the jeans bottom ones, what refs are you using?

Anyway, dont get too caught up in drawing from photos, post some stuff drawn from life, like a self portrait for example, maybe some stuff from imagination aswell!

looking forward to more stuff man, keep it up! :D

hey archipelago, thanks dude. The ref. are from some secret sources not to be mentioned in public... you got it? :D Anyway that's just an exercise to draw subjects from different angels. As Degas thoughts, only moving shapes. When I get more confident with memory drawings, I'll show some here, but for now they are such disappointment to be viewed. I'll work on it. Thanks for the advise.
oma, you'll be happy, I promise. LOL.

Aiight, more chicks, never get tired of drawing chicks. Each time I told myself only do some gestures, but they all ended up wasting my time refining and lost the flow of gesture. Hell, screw it. I'll show them anyway. Hope you guys like it.

lol, Glad to see you here isair!

Sorry haven't gotten back to recently mate, but let me say this: your new stuff is fantastic! Form are flowing, anatomy looks much better, and your linework is coming along! Something that might help with linework is put your pencil down and start drawing, but don't lift it up, or lift it from the page as little as you can - forces you to think more about what you are doing.

Keep up the good work mate!
ciao!

Ulver, thanks man. Here is the last update for today.
Ivy, glad you like it. Although I found there's something off with the arm of the upper one. Shading the color of the shirt made me forget the structure of the shoulder and went way off of it.
Sepulverture, thank you. Your right with the values. I only used an HB pencil. Should have gotten more arsenals handy.
Thanks sabe. Will improve the hatching more. It's still a bit messy to me.

Not quite happy with this one, coz I kinda get bored and rushed it to the end. Damn, should never rush it. But the attitude of the last one is ok I think, although I redrew the lips like 7 times. LOL. Thats it. See you guys later.

I don't beleive there is anything uninteresting about 'messy' hatching, in fact couldn't it be seen as expressive?

Just curious, do you study at school somehwere? How long have you been drawing? Any other media>?
Thanks for the comment in my book :yayca:

monotony, Thanks. Commander Keen at work. :D
sabe, hi, I'm really flattered that you like my hatching. Actually it comes from nowhere as first I was trying to mimic Da Vinci's hatching, but sometime I feel like following the form, but mostly I'm just smashing around LOL.
And nope, I don't study drawing anywhere (at the moment at least). I really love to have some live figure drawing sessions, but sadly there's none available locally. Maybe I'll stick with what I'm doing and do more life drawings (damn it! I must do it! tomorrow I'll do it! oh well... LOL). Tried gouache way back in school days, hadn't touched it for ages, but planning on some watercolor style with gouache or poster color or whatever can make a mass out of. :)
I do love your sketching styles. Will drop by from time to time if you don't mind. :)

lol dude - hairy and horny, heheheee.

animal studies look like a bunch of fun, seriously need to try them out sometime. Hands are looking good, very believable. On what oma said: go for it but be careful - that has the power to make or break. Thinks its a good idea to shade the background, but then you can't do a halfjob, otherwise it has the opposite effect. Also a good idea to use reflected light when doing so. Just my 2c on the matter though!

Stunning work as always man, really inspiring stuff!
ciao!

isair
August 17th, 2006, 02:26 PM
heh gotcha on that one hehehh.
seriously, I know the cast shadows are always 2-sided blade, great visual effect but also easy to break forms. I remember back in childhood drawing classes, my teacher always told me not to draw casting shadows like a patten, but each time I did exactly what he told me not to. That's really crasy days. When others were drawing, we bunch of freaks went out to fly kites. LOL. stupid kids learnt nothing from the great teacher. Now I'll make up for it. Ah sorry for talking like an old man. heh. Back to the topic. reflective light is even harder for me. I know it's great, but strange thing is in reality there's not that much change you see an object lit in perfect 5 tones with reflective light. Mostly indirect light or frontal/side light. I know you can always create light source on your drawing, but I'm not that good right now. :D And prud'hon is a good example of using side light to show 3d forms. But anyway, we should master drawing from all light sources. Thanks for the good suggestion. Thinking much clearer now.

To get the preview image go to your first post, click edit, then go advanced. The click on the attachment icon and load an image. Not sure but I think the image needs to be pretty small too.. don't know for sure - try it out mate.

Hi d, the leg was supposed to be wearing a black hose. I'm bad at drawing something with color and shading at the same time. need more practice though hmm. And the faces, I tend to draw way too much details which brokes the whole consistancy. Will try to simplify more and strenthen the structure.

BTW, why don't you use camera on larger pieces you can't scan directly and adjust some levels in Photoshop or whatever. See ya round bro.

I gotta disagree with the previous poster and say that I think you are doing really well! Your drawings from reference look fantastic, how about try drawing more from imagination (and I wouldn't say it if I didn't think you had already mastered copying).

And I noticed that most of your models had bathing suits on, how refreshingly conservative of you! I especially liked the drawings of the goat and the skull (skulls are cool).

Keep up the good work, you're amazing!

oma: Thanks pal. How nice of you.
jake: Yes, hands are still the hardest part for me. Feet, I watch a lot hehehe, so it's a little bit better than hands.
Goodbye fromthevoid: Thanks. I believe my imaginary drawings are still incompetent. It sucks balls to be exact! The last edited-in with a smiley is from imagination. But nontheless I need more practice on that part, HARD! Oh well, I won't start debating on nude or not. I only draw how they are. If I found ref. nudes with taste, I would draw them as well like what I did last time of the sleeping girl from a movie. Dude, just chill with it alright? Please don't be offended though. The least thing I wanna do is to offend someone who's nice to me. So see you around. :)

Was trying to change light direction from lower to upper, but instead it ended up with a messed up light direction. I was hesitating about posting it, LOL. But since you asked for it, I'll post along anyway. Appologies. :bashful:

Sith, hey. you like me girl bumbums? good. I was wondering how others like them. :D The color piece is like the 2nd attemp with color. Was gonna use mono, but think I'd add another color to the mix. brown, red, white. That's all. I'm glad you like it. Thanks mate.

spacemunky, yeh, agreed. I'll try to draw another sara or maybe do all of the characters later. Thanks for tipping.

Did couple SPs today, one before haircut with bedroom messy hair, the other with almost no hair left. So acustomed to photo ref. life drawing with moving subject becomes so torn apart. My parts seem all on different planes. LOL. Practice. Practice. Practice.

You have a great sense of form and value placement. Beware of drawing too much from photos. It's tending to flatten your drawings. Your self-portraits are nice but they suffer from that developed understanding. Regardless, as I said, you know where to make your mark. You just need 3-D subjects.

isair

Yeh, you got me. :D So impatient these days.
Actually I did a couple of times drawing SP from a mirror. It's a good exercise to me because you can't hold still while draw at the same time. You always keep moving but you must prevent the drawing from falling apart. The features must be consistant with each other on the head, so you can't shape copying all the way. So you memorize a lot before putting things on paper. I believe if I could master drawing with a mirror, I can do life drawings pretty much close. Thanks Banshax.
dacto: Yeh, I got mouth misplaced all the time. Should pay more attention to that part in the future. Thanks man.

Your hatching is generally good, sometimes it gets to be a bit random. You've mentioned several times wanting a looser approach. It's something we all struggle with, finding a balance between letting our material behave as itself(basically non-objective art) and representational imagery/art.
One way to get more movement in a picture is to have lines leading into each other. We're psychologically made to interpret lines as moving. The artistic term is "opposing lines", basically -) would be opposing lines, you can get more info in "Figure Drawing for all it's Worth", Prometheus mentions it in a tutorial on his website.
The trick to getting "life" into a picture is to leave a level of vagueness, people like to complete the picture in their own mind, they will attribute this "life" to the artist when it's really their own doing. What you want to do is leave a level of subjectivity in your pictures, for example you've usually got the entire figure outlined in most images. It's okay to only put line on one side and leave out the other, or put two values close together to get a subjective line. There's a lot of good info in E.H.Gombrich's "Art and Illusion".
The last tip I've got is to push the darks more, go all the way to black, or as close as your pencil will take you. Do a drawing where you just press the hell out of the pencil for your darks, and don't worry about denting the page.

isair - Looked through all yer stuff, which is rare for me, reaally nice work. No crits keep hooking in. A couple of ideas maybe - one note higher for your lights and one note darker for your shadows maybe (broaden your tonal range slightly - just an idea prolly not necessary), aaaand my beef with my own stuff and constantly on my mind, HANDS AND FEET - mucho mucho mucho importanto.

oma: they are ref. study. rather quick though, I did all those in one afternoon.
Ulver: thanks man. A bit low these days, I'll get over it soon.
armando: thanks for the tips. It helps a lot. I'll check those books out if I get the chance. Once we get used to one way of drawing, it's always hard to break through. I find myself repeating the same shit over and over again. Can't say totally meaningless, but it's not very helpful either. Damn, who says building things are harder than breaking things? I found it's exactly other way round. :|
draw: hey man, you are totally right about me. I'm too plain on the value ranges. Should bump it up a notch or two for the dark. I remind myself on each drawing but always ended up forgetting it.
Banshax: that one's a study from Dr. Richer's anatomy illustration. I kinda like his hatchings, learned a lot from his book on anatomy as well as drawing techniques. And it's not I don't want to draw for a week. It's for some reasons that I can't draw. Well thanks for the concerns. Really thanks man. :)

I'm recovering from the racks. Try to update a bit here. It shocks me as no matter how sad I am, I still can enjoy girls. Well, I mean enjoy drawing girls.

Hey isair, tnx for the very wise words in my sb. You`re very right.
I love watching your faces. Painting wise im not even touching those. However it might help to use all your value knowledge and put it to use before going to color?

I just mean pick a finished pencil piece and add color to it but gently. The painting you posted looks great however value wise its totally different then your pencil work. A dark background for example. the clothing looks quite good already. keep at it, im sure you can make lots of progress doing color tbh

edit: color wise you might want to consider continuing with this aproach?

Back to drawings. A bit unconfortable after a long period of laziness. Will try not to be such a lazy ass.

Fantastic studies, don't really know what more to say. Really wouldn't mind seeing more digital painting. The last one was really promising. Try using multiply and screen or darken and lighten at low opacity for finer tone control in PS though.
Keep up the good work!

hey isair, that painting of the chain dude is solid! Your pencil drawings could use a dose of cleanliness, the smudging outside the figures could either be more controlled or erased, although I do enjoy your use of tone and expressive mark making.

Damn, you have a way with women. Really well drawn bodies you have here - your improvement is really inspiring. Think you need to get out of you comfort zone a little more - go whacko and try out watercolours, oils, pastels, charcoal - have some with just experimenting around with stuff. It should also help with the laziness lol. The colour piece is looking great too - you're off to a spectacular start - really need to see more of those man!

Hope to see more soon dude - both you and I need to post more here. ciao dude, keep well!

elisa: Ha, really flattered you like them. Thanks.
Ryan DeMita: Thanks man. Oh, that one's a bad drawing and I did more damage with Photoshop. LOL.
Ulver: Thanks bro. Ha, glad to hear that I'm progressing. Really cheers me up coz when I look at them, I always hate them. Damn. That's really not necessary as when I do a bad drawing I can always do another one better (hopefully).
ArtZealot: Heh, thanks man. I feel the same when reading others' thread. Always tend to hate my own style in favor of others. But actually others always try to convince me that they are not that bad as I think.

Just one. Others are too shameful to be shown.

I agree with oma, the last one is really awesome! Maybe is her ear a little bit too small, but I don´t think it matter much. Sweet update isair! By the way, I always scan in colors. Scanning with greyscale the drawings tends to look bad(with my scanner at least). Take care!

isair
November 7th, 2006, 02:31 PM
oma: Hehe, thanks bro. got lucky on that one.
elisa: Yes, I just realized that have a minute saved with scanning in greyscale just don't worth it as tons of minutes have spent already with rendering. And yes, I should double check the proportions and stuff before dive in and render like crazy. Thanks sis.

Another one with the same method for today. About 2 hours I think? Damn probably overdone with many trivial details and too much heavy marks and contrast because the light seems way too distracting to me.

Hey Isair. These pencil sketches are getting top notch. Your anatomy/ expression is much better now, especially in the portraits. Now lets see some other media! Pencil sketches are fun, but how about some charcoal or paints? More digital paintings, thsoe are some of my favorite in your book. Also, there is a severe lack of animals and enviros in here. Practicing other life forms will help your people come to life more as well. And working in other media will only help your graphite skills. Looking forward to more! Keep it up.

Perhaps combine listings advice with the following. Draw more gestures and let your super well developped values relax for a while. I mean you got room to improve on gestures, movement etc like listing said. Perhaps focus on it for a while and just draw like you did here.

Jarri: thanks man.
OldNoobie: thanks. as mentioned above, just experiment. but really glad that you guys like it.
Listing: Really thanks man. I'm literally practicing more as you suggested. BTW, love your drawings styles very much. Talk about that later on your sb later...
Banshax: hey, good advice thanks man. I do realize the weakness now and work on it right away. Really appreciate that.
Placeboast: Thank you. glad you like it. Sure I won't take the stars too seriously (and I don't think I deserve 5 as many great thread here on CA). But it could mean more people dropping by and leave great suggestions which I cherish most. :)

Some gesture studies, first one was after Sargent drawing.
I'm trying to memorize more and meanwhile think about more of forms in space and weight and balance stuff. Some identical drawings are done from memory after the ref. study by referring to my own drawing as little as possible. But sometimes I got carried away by referring to the darn thing too much, so I draw them mirrored so that I can concentrate on my own memory and thinking of forms rather than copying it the second time. (too lazy to change to a different sheet and so back and forth. that's really annoying.) Probably I should put some simple values to the mix I think.

Wicked stuff man. You are an inspiration to us all! Also, I think I may have to incorporate some of your techniques for memorization and such into my own practice.

Keep it comin'!

d: what's up bro. I have a really hard time to draw from memory. Still no better way to practice, so I take the hard and stupid way. Hope the intuition of understanding kick in earlier than never. heh.
Ookchk: hey man. Glad that you find it useful.
oma: I was think of buying a .7mm, too. Since I hate shopping, guess I'll stock quite a stash of leads next time. LOL. Thanks for dropping by bro.
Ulver: thanks man. I'm forcing myself to think more of forms in any drawings. But it's so easy to be carried away by details and forget it. It really helps a lot when you always have form in mind from start to the end. Everything depends on it I believe.

MOstly are gesture scribbling these days, no bothering scanning each and every piece of that shit. So not much to post I guess.
Oh and finally got myself a new scanner. It's a cheap shit, but still much better than my last one. My other one was like 5 years old, a product of '99, which scans white sheet as gradient now, oh hell. Good riddance.

yay! awesome dude . now you hit your brain with information even more.:D

post 202 the girl in th ebikini , has an wicked good shading in it , this proofs you can do it! the way u fill your paper with sketches shows also u have more confidence and your goal is to undesrstand . so maybe i could give some mo help... the practice u ´ve done in your last update is really good, now you could violate, i mean rotate the shapes of the drawing from her arm torso or leg too . to handle the proportions even better.
i´m excited looking for your new improvements .
keep working

kais: thanks dude. ha. you from Shanghai, too.
GOBLINSHARK: hey. Thanks for the tips. Your right. The torso always rotates towards the side which supports the body. But for some weird reason I always fail to indicate that. I'll pay more attention to that. :)
oma: ha. good for you bro. You can sometimes ask her to pose for you. I'm too geeky to have one. :.(

aiight. do what I usually do here. 3 from center left with ref. others from memory/imaginary wahtevar. and dido and random dude from web.

second and last page are looking good. i like the more sketchy fast feeling of the last 2 page's. the imagine gals are looking great, make more of them :).

thanks oma. they look fast but they are not drawn fast at all. :D it's just i have no patience on garment. lol. i really need to draw something without flesh for some patience honing, like drapery etc. and yea, i'll soon back to gesture stuff. i'm just taking a break from it. mindless copying something is like meditation ha. i love the feel of a blank mind. it's not good for learning stuff i know. just for fun.
these are blind copy for a peaceful mind.

very nice updates, pencils are really looking sweet. I see you really know how to draw the female figure, maybe you should try to individualize them with clothing from imagination or somesuch. Portraits are great, keep doing those (should tell myself that). By the way are you from shanghai?
