Hello everyone! As of right now, I'm entering my senior year in high school. I'm *hoping* to be a Computer Animation major at Ringling School of Art and Design in the fall of 2007, but we'll see how the acceptance/funding goes. :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/thesinfulsaint/2The_GRAMMINATOR_by_thesinfulsaint.jpg
This is one of my pride and joy portfolio pieces. Prisma colors on Cold press watercolor paper, 18" x 24".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/thesinfulsaint/corey.jpg
Another one of my pride and joy portfolio pieces. Graphite on regular sketchbook paper, and I can't remember the size...but it's pretty big.

Here are a few life drawings I did at the Columbus College of Art and Design Summer Preview program. (They're in chronological order)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/thesinfulsaint/nakeywakey4.jpg

Then, finally, here are a couple of poor photos of a series of self portraits I'm working on for my portfolio. In the end, there will be three. All three will be done with oil.

(Please keep in mind that these are still VERY rough)

Aaaand here are just a couple of random pages out of my sketchbook.

I know that I don't have any cartoony-type work posted here, but I talked to Eric from Ringling, and he told me on my visit that it was best to not even let them know that I could do that yet. So... yep. I've been focusing on realism. :)

Yeah, I tend to erase my plumb lines when I'm doing figure drawing. I'll be sure to leave more of them there next time, thanks! Thanks for stopping by. :)

Your best pieces are really masterful. Keep working and soon even just your normal pieces will be as good as the best stuff you can do now. Maybe you should try different subject matter to test yourself.

Thank you! Yes, I plan to try many different subject matter and media in my portfolio. I need to get around to setting up an interesting still life to paint or draw!

just dropping by. some really sweet stuff happening here. i recommed googling master drawings example. "davincis drawings" it shows their approach to the importance of delineating form with contour line work. and mentler counts too his thread is a gold mind

Hey! how many still lifes are you gona put in your portfolio?

thesinfulsaint
August 20th, 2006, 08:42 AM
I'm not really sure yet--probably one or two. I don't think I'm going to really make my still life a typical still life, though. I'll probably do something weird with it like change the scales all around. :)

Wow, nice stuff. That portrait rendering of the guy with toothpick or straw is the best. Good work and hope to see you at Ringling next year.

Nice sketchbook! I really like the prismacolor one of the car; although the house in the background lacks a feeling of stucture (it kind of sags a bit) the car itself is an impressive rendering of a very shiny/reflective surface.

Of your figure work, I think that the head/portrait is best. Your proportions are pretty good over all, but a lot of the muscles and fat pads feel a little like putty; they look more like they're just stuck on rather than being attatched to/pulling/hanging off of bones and ligaments.

All the same I applaud you! This is some very good work for just having begun to draw nudes. Your use of values is very good! :)

Please post more... Admissions may not want to see your cartoony stuff, but that shouldn't keep you from showing it here!

thesinfulsaint
September 20th, 2006, 05:40 PM
Yes, I agree, the house is a bit weak on the first one. Every Portfolio review I've had at least one person has said the same thing. Fixing the house is on my to-do list--thanks for the crit! :)

Again, thanks for the crits (and compliment :)) on my life drawings!

All right, I guess I will get around to posting some more. I've been pretty lazy with taking photos of my stuff lately. xP

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/thesinfulsaint/handswip.jpg
This is a new portfolio piece I'm working on. I wouldn't consider anything there done yet--I have a ton of refining to do on the crayons and hand. Not ot mention the rest of the picture. Oy.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/thesinfulsaint/IMG_0483.jpg
Did that at CCAD's Precollege, but I just got around to photographing it. I'll most likely refine it and include it in my final portfolio.

Thanks a lot! The oil painting is just on a little piece of stretched canvas. The acrylic one is on gesso'd cold press watercolor paper.

Advice; Force yourself to have something to post before replying. Makes for a more filling sketchbook.

You work great with acryllics, the skin tones on that hand are really nice.

thesinfulsaint
November 29th, 2006, 06:41 PM
All right, taking your advice, Justin.

Here are the three self portraits that I finished up. All three are done in oil and are about 12" by 12". I'm still not completely satisfied with them, but I've been working on them for so long and I think I need to just let some of the details go.

The photos are really poor--I'll post better ones once it's sunny outside and I can get some better lighting.

Damn Ms Saint - I'm going to start hating on you in a minute. Really nice recent work. I didn't have a lot of color pieces in my portfolio, but I might have to include a few more. Those oils and acrylics are nice. Must go... have to stop procrastinating and work on my portfolio - grumble, grumble ;)

Nice work saint, I like the first one best. You must have a lot of time in all those pieces. :teeth: So, what happened to the "original idea pieces" you don't want to shair?:P Still holding out? :tihi: Looking good though, you should be proud!!

thesinfulsaint
November 30th, 2006, 11:06 PM
Xenogil- Thanks! Actually...heh... That one got put on the wayside. I was told at a National Porfolio Review day that it was a little on the boring side, so I decided to spend my time on other pieces. I did finish it...but trust me, it's nothing worth looking at.

artmessiah- Haha... I appreciate that. :D Good luck--keep on working!

Jmark's- Thanks! Yeah... I spent a lot of time on each one... It was starting to drive me crazy. These are the pieces I was talking about up there. ;) They tell a little story, incase you can't tell (my little tribute to caffeine addiction. :D). I have some more original pieces in the making, though--even more creative than this. I'll probably post them when I finish them.

Hi Saint! I really love your portfolio, I'm sure the admissions folks at Ringling will too. :3

Do you have any quicker work, like sketches or non-portfolio things you've done for fun? Your hyper-rendered stuff is so top notch, I'm really interested to see what your leisurely art is like.

Also, do you have any tips for taking pictures of your art? I just assume you used a camera for yours because of the size, but the quality is really nice. I'm having trouble doing the same with my pictures.

What an amazing and inspiring sketchbook!
And to come from a high school senior!
I am extremely impressed!
Hey, I don't think you will have any problems what so ever when you try to get into any college.
...wow. That is all I can say.
Did you practice a lot with drawing hands or what?
You are a phenominal artist!
Good luck on getting into the school you decide on. (Even though you don't need any.)
I would really like to see what you could produce when drawing animals!
I would love to see that!
Keep this up!
I am totally coming back to this sketchbook!

Ryn-- Thank you so much! :) From what I've seen, your portfolio is going to be pretty killer, too. As far as photographing goes, I'd recommend pinning your work to the wall against a black background. Light it very well, but don't point any lights directly at the artwork--that'll create a glare, especially on paint. Put your camera on a tripod, turn off the flash, and photo. :) If you can't pin your work up on the wall, try doing the same method, except on the floor. Stand over your work to photograph it. The only downside to this is that it's easy to distort your images, especially on larger pictures. Finally, if you have good photo editing software, don't be afraid to do a little digital color correction to make sure that your photos truly show your work as it is meant to be seen. :)

GeeWesley-- Thanks for taking a look! I'll be sure to keep posting.

Fish Tank Inc-- Thank you so much! And thanks even more for the in-depth critique through e-mail. As I mentioned there, I really appreciate you taking so much interest in my work. :)

anubis713-- Aww, thanks so much. *blush* But really, there are plenty of high school seniors out there with far more talent than me. I do appreciate it, though! And yes, I tend to draw hands a lot, mostly because, well, they're right there and good practice. :D I did actually do a lot of animal paintings earlier in high school. I guess I'll post them.

j a k e-- Thanks! That's what I was going for on the one self portrait--extreme expression. I'm glad you think it came out well.

Envisor-- Thanks for taking a look. I'll be sure to check out your sketchbook!

Yoooooooooo. Nice to see updates. I need to Update myself. Regardless, I think you should do a search for Mentler's sketchbook. He has some awesome stuff on how to relate the figure to an ovid (for the upper body mass, upper torso and back) and how a square relates to the pelvic mass. Just a thought, I'm sure ranglin covers that pretty in-depth.

Yay, updates!

I really love those last two sketch pages, they're awesome. I bet it felt good to get those ideas out after a bunch of academic type stuff!

Personal thoughts

Maybe focus more on proportion then on shapes. It seems you are trying really hard to get 'shapes' of things and ignoring perspective and proportion- those 2 combined will really pump your work up.

Good luck!

Woah! Did you have your artwork displayed at the regional Scholastic exhibit in Northeast Ohio? I recognize the work-- the cans, and the guy with the toothpick (I remember bringing my parents over to see it). I had a portfolio displayed right on the other side of the wall from your portrait series with the can... small world! Anyway, I really love your work- seen there and here.

Either that or I'm wrong and just embarassed myself... :S (Pretty sure I'm not though)

And this is what we call procrastination!!! :D :D :D

Gbertek--I've been looking through Mentler's thread off and on lately--it's a great resource! Thanks for the tip.

Ryn--Yeah! It definitely felt good! Thanks!

Justin--I will definitely work on both proportion and perspective. Those are some weaknesses of mine--thanks for the crit!

flying~high--Aww, thanks! :) I'll definitely post more!

armaldon--Thanks a lot, that's really awesome to hear. I'll be sure to stick around!

copperfire-- I used to work only from photo--the earlier work on this thead of my car and of the guy with the sucker are both from photo, as are the animal paintings. Pretty much everything else is from life. I just like working from life better now because of all of the rich detail that can't be captured in photo.

Earendil--Thanks so much! Good advice--thanks!

artmessiah--Ahh...the laziness of senior year. :) That's what got me. I'll definitely try to post more!

Kirsten--WOW! Yeah, I did!! That's so wild! I think I remember you, actually! Didn't you have the sort of old-school style science fiction illustrations in your portfolio? I really liked yours... it was so different! In fact, your work "Rune Escape" was one of my favorites... I giggled a little inside. :)

Crazy Dude--Wow, thanks a ton! That feels really great to hear.

Now for a MASSIVE sketch dump! It's not as top notch as some of my other work, but I've been working on loosening up, capture more motion and force in my drawings, and just relaxing a bit. :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/thesinfulsaint/Fat_Man_in_a_Beanie_by_thesinfulsai.jpg
This one is just random... I felt like painting, so I scanned in one of my cleaner sketches and just did a quick paint job. It took around an hour, I think.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/thesinfulsaint/clouds61207.jpg
I was outside one day when I looked up at the clouds and decided that they looked especially pretty, so I pulled out my laptop and tablet and started painting. :) It took around 30 minutes, I think.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/thesinfulsaint/selfportrait61207.jpg
I had been on such a painting streak from the clouds that I decided to do a self portrait. This one took a little longer... 4 hours maybe? I'd like to go in and finish it at some point because the colors are very true to the moment, but I'm not sure if I can recreate it.

very very nice work in here ms. saint, it's been awhile since i've visited this thread, those self portraits are awesome!
In your figure work, my only crit is that you might want to be more systematic when it comes to rendering so that you have consistency throughout your drawing, working with the broad side of the pencil/charcoal would also be helpful to get tones down quickly for short poses

check out Ron Lemen's figure drawing tutorials: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14035

for more info on what I'm talking about

PS. glad to hear that you got into your dream school!

Hey, it's Zaxser from the education thread over here. I felt sorry about whining to you so I'd thought I'd bump your sketchbook thread. What do people mean by graphite? Is it just a normal HB pencil or what? Anyway, you make it look like charcoal. I'm very curious about this.

If you're still have problems doing and using gestures, read, "The Natural Way to Draw" if you haven't already. When I look at the picture of the kids running I can't but think they'd look better if you had drawn a gesture and tried to do a finished piece over it. Just a thought.

Overall, amazing work. Good luck.

pancho--Thanks a lot! I'll have to give that technique a try; I tend to use only a mechanical pencil when I'm in my sketchbook, and I'm sure that that's half of my problem. Very useful link, too. Thanks!

Zaxser-- Aww, don't worry about it. I probably would have reacted the same way. I'm not sure what image you're talking about... My guess is http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/thesinfulsaint/IMG_0085.jpg this one? I wasn't going for a look of running for this one; I was actually going for more of a march, but you're right-- a quick gesture would certainly have helped out a lot. I've heard of "The Natural Way to Draw"--I guess I'll have to give it a read-through. :)

zeitgeist-- Hey, it was my pleasure to stop by your sketchbook! Thanks a lot--I hope to see you there!
