A portait from a girl I found in a book of mine. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. I'm starting to think simplification, shape, and overall theme and concept rather than small details.

Well here u go!

I wanted to post this here, cuz I think it'll get more views. I have a oil painting thread in the life drawing section, if anyone cares to look.

I know the top of the head is sort of chopped off, but that's an easy fix, its cuz thats where th clip that was holding it was at.

I'd really appreciate some C & C! :)

Looks pretty sweet. it is much thicker than I normally paint with oils. The hard-part-of the-brush-trail-thing is kinda bugging me some. It is one of those things that since I can't really tell what it is I spend more time looking at it than the face etc. Just my 2 cents .. later

I was just sort of experimenting right there and not too sure. Thanks for your comment though :)

I like your thick applications of paint, personally it gives the painting more texture and character.

Great job Ink! You did a very good job on her eyes and the suttle blue gives the hair a nice feel. There's something about her ear though, that doesn't seem quite right, but that could be just me :)

I look forward to checking out your oil paintings to come. Good job! :chug:

Here's another one. I kinda like it, but I need some new eyes to take a look at it. Please give me some crits and comments. I'd love a paintover, but I know it kind of seems to much to ask.

Well, here it is:

Nice paintings. I would have prefered the girl to have a little bit less texture, but that is just me and is your artistic choice! :)

As far as seeing the shapes and not focusing on details, youre getting there! Its like a breakthrough once you can finally see them and render them!

One thing that can give you alot of practice, without costing you an arm and a leg for material costs, is getting some soft vine charcoal, newsprint, and then shading the entire newsprint with a medium grey tone. then pick an object and start doing the same thing. Use an eraser to highlight areas and darken the darks with charcoal. Its really cheap and can give you a TON of practice, which will help you be able to see the "shapes" more clearly, rather than details! It is almost like painting as long as you use soft vine charcoal and not compressed charcoal sticks!

I hope that helps you!
