The last still lifes are looking good! It's good that you're working on anatomy. Check your proportions, particularly of the face, and keep up the good work!

Hey (c)
I really like your anatomy stuff. You seem to handle that quite well!
Esp. the eye your drew with surface lines on it!
I pesonally find drawing still lives is depressing, so i would focus more on anatomy. then again, its a personal thing :) Your anatomy stuff looks inspiring!

Hey C,
i really recommend u get a grasp of proportions and the various landmarks that occupy the body, memorising these will really make life a lot easier when dealing with the figure.
Anyways keep working hard and hopefully u'll get to where u wanna go.

Nice figure studies from before. Your latest ones seem distorted, though. Keep studying the proportions of the face. The eyes are actually around the middle of the head, and the top of the head seems a bit sunken in on your drawing on the 13th.

Yes, some of your figures are really distorted. The one below has some real potential, I see bones and form in your lines. Good job! What ever you were doing when you drew this keep doing it.

Nice work here mate! :) I really like your eye studies. What I would like to see in your images is some bolder strokes. Try not to be too shy with the pencil and press a bit harder. It creates nice boldness in your images :)
Good work though

Hope your presentation went well. The top left seated figure looks pretty good, but the rest seem very elongated/exaggerated. Master studies are good, maybe try to go to some life drawing sessions? Keep going at it! Design can be poopie sometimes when you just want to draw and paint...

Wo-ho good job! This is the only near finished compostion I have ever seen form you! Good job again!
A few crits: the rim lighting looks awesome in most places be some make it confusing to see were the light is coming form. For example the leg, it has that lightng on both sides? compared to the head the legs are light all wrong. Watch you brush strokes near the legs also. the rim lighting is pretty spot on uptop be the lines get a little wonky down down. Myself, i would get rid of the rim lighting on the lower part of the abs (top i think looks fine) and the groin.
The textured back ground looks top notch except the part were the "light" is coming of the stab. I tlooks like it was worked and then reworked to many times. Just adding back in some more texture would help. My favorite part in the background is the upper left corner, it is very well done.
I am impressed with your sketches lately man! The last two show really nice form and are a welcomed break from your usually hyper deformation. Make sure you draw your hands and feet though (shakes finger) the only way you will get better at them is if you draw them!

jipp u are right light is a big issue in my paintings for some reasons i can not gert it right. have to study mroe their. i alwazs get confused when Tiemens or Church paint their stuff so much light but all seems to me right. but i can not get that so nice. not jet :)

I was the last 3 month bussy to ddesign a concept interior for peugeot (school project) and its really highly coneptionel. the most people dont understand what i sketched. I am afraid I also do not really understand where most of these are coming from. Maybe it's because of the presentation? If you combine some of them and shirk them down it may present better. Also, some of them appear to be unfinished. Slap some boarders or some flow to it and maybe it will make more sense. I think one of the jobs of a designer it to make it understandable to every one. I mean no offense and I just want to help but if nobody understand what you are drawing this maybe a problem.

wow great lines in the last post, lovely!
Moai
February 16th, 2007, 05:59 PM
I agree with both of the previous posters. Those are some nice flowing lines, but it is essential that you make your designs clear and understandable, especially if it's something that people need to be able to understand and use, like the interior of a car. The only exception to this that I can think of is when you design an alien culture or a superadvanced race, where being overwhelming and unrecognizable would give you a suitable effect. To be quite frank, the only part I recognized in most of these pieces was the steering wheel.
Remember, I'm only harsh because I love ya!:rendered:

March 6th, 2007, 06:24 PM
I definatly agree with Moai. In some of you previous sketches there seemed to be a improvement but i feel as though it's slipping back down because i have not noticed as much anatomy drawings. I think it's one think to have a particular style that isn't quite right anatomically but it looks cool but some of your stuff just looks wrong. No offence intened!
(c)
March 7th, 2007, 08:18 AM
no worrys I will never get offended :) I love critics and dudes u are all right. "runs back to anatomy" but could u also point out parts wich need the most improvment and which not??? I know my arms and hands look off but I think the joints look right or are they off in foreshortening????
or i simple have to learn to observe more hehe
thanks
Moai
March 7th, 2007, 12:41 PM
could u also point out parts wich need the most improvment and which not???
Fair enough. Right now I think it's definitely your hands that need the most work. Hogarth has a book, Drawing Dynamic Hands, that you might want to look at. Personally, I haven't gone through that book, but his other books are quite helpful, so I feel fairly confident in recommending it. Doing studies out of a book can be somewhat dull at times, but the end result of greater knowledge and ability is more than worth it. For example, after just a few studies from Hogarth's Drawing the Human Head, my ability to draw a satisfactory head has vastly increased.
Good luck, and have fun.

Wow! Whatever you're doing, keep going in that direction. These drawings are greatly improved over the last ones. There's still some anatomical issues, but the forms seem less flat and the lines seem more expressive. Good job!:rendered:

Awesome, I definatly aggree with Moai too. I noticed that many of your drawlings have a lean to them, which hand do you draw with?

Watch out for strange forshortening on your characters, your gas mask dude seems to have several differant angles in which he's forshortened. Sometimes it's worth it just to drop a vanishing point somewhere just to rough your gestures into perspective, nothing too anally detailed, just a little reference to help eyeball stuff where it needs to be.
Pointy boobie!

Nice work mate :) There seems to be something a bit off with the balance of your characters but otherwise you've been doing nice work.
Keep it up!
I'll be back later to give some more advice

Same issue I have; overvaluing too early and not knowing how to paint my way out.
I think the trick is to work with a narrower value range at the start and put in the brighter values in at a later stage.
That way if you decide to shift the values using levels or somesuch the changes happen more evenly and you avoid the more contrasty areas washing out details.
It's all about der workflow!
Your char's shoulders seem to be too low and too far back or his neck too long. I think you would get a better pose if you put his hand on the cliff edge in front of his knees.
His 'wings' are quite bright, perhaps consider using them as a lightsource?

I think Machineabuse has some really good crtis. I really think that the "wings" should be a light source. This would give you some more value on the building which is really flat (even though it's a full-front view it should have some depth).
Also, as far a composition, the bright wings lead my eyes right off the page instead of leading me towards the character.

jipp thanks... will work on the light. and try to illuminate the chara so that he become the focus of the whole picture.. damn jippp anatomy is hard hmm.... will work more on it

here an upate. hmm... try to give the character the same light like the wings. also will improve the bg more and gve a more redish color.
but I think his pose is now a bit better and the building will get a bounce light to flesh it more.
please could someone give me a paint over vor the chara. I am not sure how the legs should look like.

I can't find too much to say. Not that it's a real bad thing! Just need to keep on improving. I would definitely start hitting the anatomy again. The profiles are just not convincing enough. There are not enough "little truths" about the human form in there to be "real." I like the start of varying line weight but I really think it could be pushed further. :)

thanks Nyx and Spats. will hit it at soon as possible also bought some new paints so that I can play with analog skillz.
here are the first scenes of my short movie. I will also illustrate parts of it
Scène one Walk
It is a nice cool, shadowy Saturday evening. I turn right and follow a small
alleyway into a backyard. I go this route every week, maybe even every day.
Counting would not matter. It only takes me 5 minutes and I know it helps.
Helps to think.
I work in a five-storied building behind a desk in front of my computer.
Staring at it all day, everyday.
I create visuals, brochures, letter types, anything 2D. I’ve gotten quite
far in my job actually. Can’t ever say that I haven’t got enough work, but
sometimes there simply aren’t enough ideas. Actually I never thought that I
could end up in a creative-block. Damn but sometimes it happens. To think I
thought that Barcelona would bring enough visual inspirations with it, when
I moved here 2 years ago.
I slide further through the backyards and end up in front of a big pink
door. No, you are thinking in the wrong direction. I am not standing in
front of a gay bar!
No, it’s the bar of the crazy German! He never found a proper name for it,
so he called it ‘The CG-bar’. Which fits it quite well I suppose, because CG
stands also for Computer Graphics.
But more about that later….
I pull the door open and enter.
…..
….
Scene two dialogue
With a happy : "Moin", I enter a narrow room. On my left and right lie some
weirdly shaped sofa things with tables in between. The third from the top,
close to the bar, that’s my spot. You can sense the coffee best (sweet
fragrances from places far away mingle in the air around your head) and
ordering doesn’t take forever! Although, when I really think about it, it
never takes that long. In this little cafe there’s barely ever enough space
for 10 people, so the waiting line is nice and compact shall we say.
It is cosy and intense in experience. On the wall in front of me are
different artefacts from early days. Pieces that were created in the Design
Academy of Eindhoven. Some are dusty, some well polished; mostly things with
a lot of character and history. History, hmm… again a big word which hardly
get spoken in here. The crazy German is not the biggest fan of it. So mostly
the dialogues that float with the coffee fragrances here on a free basis are
art related, though everyone comes into the café with the strong intension
NOT to speak about it.
But anyway, that defines the target group of this little thing. Mostly
artist, designers or gallery owners end up here. Sometimes business people
too, who try to find a quiet place with inspiration in which to sit.
How to order???...Yes well... it took me a while to understand, because
there is no guard behind the bar. Everyone is sitting around somewhere, non
of them really looking much like a coffee specialist, or a cook, or even
just a bit smarter and more ‘employed’. The trick is to just lift your
finger, and with a little bit of magic someone in this little crowd will
smile in your direction. Often friends or sometimes even a regular takes
your order and brings it to the bar.
And now you will find one of the many highlights of this café. Because when
you look carefully over the bar you will find Big D. Big D is the coffee
wonder, and no I don’t mean the machine (that’s Betty), Big D is a midget.
He looks a bit Turkish, but only the hardcore of this café knows he is an
Italian and fresh from Naples.
I lift my finger and smile around. A dude in a pink bathrobe turns his head
and smiles. It is Carsten himself, the owner. I know the pink bathrobe
doesn’t seem to be the best fashion for a café owner, but in this case it is
pure style! And of course he just fell out of bed. Is he lazy? I don’t know
and I don’t care! Most people don’t wear simple clothes here anyway.
Artists’ fashions are always on the move to express themselves in the most
arrogant and visual way.
It’s fun to watch them fighting for the most curious outfit! And yep, I also
belong to them. Artist or designer, they’re all the same so long as they
don’t hear you say it.
The door flaps open and a little guy enters the room. He’s wearing a
backpack and a funny looking purple scarf covered in intricate floral
designs. He wanders through the room straight to the bar. From the back you
can hear a loud:" Hallooooooow my meijsje!!!!" That would be Carsten. It’s a
cheesy greeting for 10 years already, but still effective.
Joppe is his name. One of the oldest friends and regulars, he’s always funny
and happy for a coffee and sambuca. He is a quiet artist from Holland who
drops by every now and then to tell about his newest architectural
developments. I do not know if they are true. I was never really interested
in architecture. But what is always nice is that when Joppe is in the house
it also means GOOD FOOD! So tonight we can expect a great five-course meal.
These meals are already a legend here in Barcelona. It is never announced,
but yet all of a sudden the same people always turn up at the bar. A nice
happening that owes thanks to the mobile communication revolution!
I hastily get my mobile out of my pocket and send a couple of sms’ to
friends who simply love good food. Improvisation is one of the greatest
gifts a good cook can have. I do not think they will go for groceries today,
just the stuff in the fridge will be enough, and mostly people who get to
know about this happening early enough bring some stuff anyway. It’s just a
big family as I already said.
Joppe throws his bag on the seat and falls down next to it. His head flops
back onto the back of the chair, a huge groan following from his mouth.
Obviously wrecked by jetlag.
Carsten wanders over in his direction, a tablet balancing two coffee’s and
two Jamesons on his arm. His bare feed make a funny "flupp flupp" noise on
the stone floor. He arrives and, clattering the tablet on the table, gives
Joppe a strong slap on his shoulder, before dropping himself in a chair.

I've only got a few moments to post, so I'll just comment on your latest piece. I'll go over stuff in more detail when I get the chance! Overall, I really like the vibrancy of the piece, punctuated by the redness of her outfit. The rendering's done really nicely and I think there's a lot of good use of value (something I have trouble handling). However, I can't seem to read the character's form underneath the clothing very well.
Keep it up!

liking the colouring!
keep working on proportions, and anatomy, find something that helps you and(books-movies-anything) study it.sometimes learning-sources help differently. so search around for something you tha you feel helps you the most.
keep at it!
