Hey guys! I'm new here, and after lurking for a while I thought that I would throw some work in here and see what I could learn.

I'm posting some older works as well as some sketches.

I apologize in advance for how it displays the attachments.. if anyone can show me how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Hey,

brilliant start here kina! :) The comic is excellent! I really like the vivid colours, and also the introduction picture to start of your comic. Like some people have said, the level of detail is great! Its good to see that your mixing up what you do. Keep it up, cant wait for some more! :D

Finished this a few days ago. Just a warning, 99% of the time I draw anthro or anime artwork, of which I have not really posted because it's not my greater stuff, it's just the stuff that I enjoy drawing most for fun :D

But here's some fanart from xxxHolic.

It's odd, your other work is so rich and detailed, but your anime work feels a lot more flat and lifeless (if not abundantly colourful!)... perhaps is the style, i'm not sure.

LOVE the pose on this one: http://www.kina-ink.com/images/art/current/623.jpg

Yeah well my anime stuff.. is always so much faster. I guess I got into the habit of being on Deviantart, and having younger kids follow my stuff, askiing me to post cute fuzzy things. And the bad part is, is that I have so much fun drawing things like these, that I tend not to take the time to do larger, more detailed pieces :( I also feel i dont have my own style enough yet to do original artwork. so i tend to rely on anime.

this is what I do when I draw for fun. please don't hurt me.

those are my actual most recent works, done for fun or as art trades with users on Deviantart. It's a bad habit to get into, beacause doing too many of these seems to make me.. get worse at drawing rather than progressing.

It's just so hard for me to NOT be in that community though, and to actually focus on progressing in art instead of beating out the same poses, faces, and drawings.

i need help o_o

Kina, it doesnt matter what ever community your part of.. the thing is
when you came to ca.. you wanted your art to improve.. to the point that you can do something do something professionaly (and change your path with it)

Do what you love to do. Never let "us" or "them" stop you from enjoying your art, and growing in your art. but remeber you came here for a purpose. Deviant art is just a tool to show your stuff. Depending on what you want to show them is up to you.

So if you have one picture thats anime "style" and one thats.. more realistic why dont you post both in DA.
i hope im making sense...
but just draw what ever.. post what ever....

anywho.. beautiful stuff. I wish I had the creativity to draw again

Nice start, lots of nice pieces in the first post. Those red ones look great.
The second post (#7 on this thread) I don't like it too, but these last one's are also nice, this style could be very interesting as illustrations for children books.
Keep it up.
Cheers

White Rose: I do post both styles on Deviantart, which confuses a few people. Hehe. I do want to improve though, so I will slowly be stopping the kiddish anime stuff and trying to hone in on specific skills.

Even as a children's book illustrator, I think leaving the purely anime styles and trying to strengthen other aspects of my art would really benefit my situation.

I really appreciate the comments, guys! If you have any suggestions on.. I dunno. imrpoving? Trying new styles or trying to break out of old habits, it would be greatly appreciated.

I love anime/manga... ermm I used to draw them heaps.. now I don't.. but I am planning on going back.. I am sure you are sort of in the same shoe as me. :) I absolutely loved your XXX holic piece, I am a big fan of it too but I rather enjoyed your designs and bold colours. THough I think some patterns dont' quite go well with xxx holic, more of what you did on the top left corner.. that smokey swirls work better I think.

Improving? I think anatomy is always a good place to start, biggest influence anime has is its simplified features and faces. So maybe some realistic studies could help you to break it.. cheers, Min

Hey Kina,

welcome aboard,
love your stuff,
its really imaginative, and I love how you are willing to change up your style.
(If you ask me, ultimately its about using whatever style most effectively expresses the emotional content of the art anyway)

I have a good friend who also does some amazing artwork that she posts over at Deviantart (by name of Daichym). I've suggested a couple of times that she come on over and share some of her goodness here, but she has has remained strangely reluctant. Reading your recent posts gives me a little better idea of what she may be thinking.

Glad youre here, and into improvement,

folks generally have a lot of good advice, support and awesome examples of art to share on this site.
I feel like I've learned a lot and improved on my drawing habits in a relatively short period of time.
I'll bet you will too.

Just keep at it.

Oh, the Bjork song illustration is the bomb.

Cant wait to see what's next.

Hey again!

Well I took some people's advise, and my own nagging conscience to go to a life drawing session. I'm planning on going every week until school starts, and then hopefully there will be something at school to keep me going too.

Anyway, here are my latest sketches :) Trying to avoid the anime flatness by just switching gears completely. let me know what you think! Crits greatly appreciated.

Nallen: I checked out your friend's work, and I really like it! I see what you mean though.. sometimes people are just afraid of being judged when they post something they feel is their best work and then because of stylistic differences, harsh words are thrown around. Thanks for the comments :)

jrr: You're just jealous! :p

bumskee: do it! do more anime! lol. and yeah a lot of the elements in the Holic piece were more of my own stylistic doings than from the manga itself. I got kind of carried away, lol.

hey kina, out of this newest batch of drawings, my favourites are the last 2. Your definitely getting better, all I can say now is that when your life drawing, use less lines, but more defining lines.
Like when plotting out the initial gesture, try to use say 2 - 3 lines for the entire figure, then just build around that.
You see what im saying? probably not, im not a talker! :P The last 2 drawings look like your trying to do what I just said though.
Your hatching has come along way, and your colour and design are years above me!

keep it up yo! ;)

actually i received the same advice about using less lines recently. i'll definitely keep that in mind when i go to my next session :D thaaaaanks!

Heya, kina! You've some really imaginative and detailed pieces here - and it's really good to see a mix of those and looser sketches. Your anatomy studies are coming along well - keep going!! :cheerleader:

I used to draw a lot of anime/manga but stopped to improve like you. You can still go back to it after learning the basics, and it will most likely look more individualised.

Happy drawing, and have fun with it :)

Updated!

Went to the weekly life drawing class again. I know, more boring nudes. But this time.. brush pens! haha. I think I need to do a whole lot more of these before I get out of the rut i'm in. I still have no ideas for a larger more imaginative piece and it makes me sad.

i suppose in the meantime I'll just keep practicing :)

Damn! Thats all I can say. These are some very interesting images. I don't really care for your anime-ish pictures although I do like this one

How can I not like something so happy? Look how happy those stars are. I wish I had little stars that smiled at me! Overall, there are some fantastic works here! I loved those bachelorette pictures! Nothing to crtique, sorry I can't help you in that respect.

Hey Kina, nice stuff, i love the motion in your hamster rex sketches, really nice. Life drawing is confident and solid as well! I like the loose sketches.
On your colour sketches there seems to be no designated light source, meaning they don't look as solid and sometimes confuses the eye, in my mind. But nice sense of design on them.
Keep 'em coming!

Draw those hands!

I noticed on one of the figure sketches the little note I can't draw hands...all the more reason to sit down and crank out a ton of hand studies to get used to them. They're tricky, I will admit - in fact, I did a lot of hand-in-the-pocket and behind the back when I was first starting out - but keep on drawing them, and you'll get used to it...

Best of luck...

I love the diverse styles of manga that you have. Most manga artist do it one way and one way only. keep up the good work.
