well, about the piece:

the head and the armour looks like 2 separate entities. try to merge the 2 better(alignment hint hint). mess up the hair at the edges a bit more. it looks as though you juz painted over the outlines without adding some details to the hair. the ear is abit too outstanding, it doesnt fit in with the rest of the piece in terms of lighting. try to get rid of the scribbly lines at the mouth edges. use shadows to emphasize on those points. i'm still not sure whether you're using 1 constant light source or not, but do try to use more variations of lighting.

this is a very good start.

i wish you would finish the piece since it has potential. i'd look into giving the armor some highlights to make it seem more like metal. the lighting on the hair just doesn't seeem to be right. if you look at real hair, in most cases it has a sharp halo highlight around it. the face, especially the eyes as you noted, need some work. you have such dramatic lighting in the background, but it seems like the face is lit by a completely different light source. working on this will make it a stronger piece.
