I've seen this screenshot in the forum and I wonder how that guy got the tools palette to look like that, like he rotated it or something. it is vertical, not horizontal. I got painter 9 and I really would love to have my tools like that so I have more space for my painting.

Great question.
I have painter ix.5 and would love to set up the tools palette horizontal instead of vertical.
Is this an option in the latest versions of painter?

Ryan Church is using Painter 6 in those videos. All the palettes are movable in that version. You can do the same and more in Painter 9. You can separate each of the palettes (like layers and papers) and I think you can move the top toolbar to have it floating but I kinda like it up top. Once you have it setup how you want, save the workspace as a different name so you can switch when working on wider formats and revert back doing the opposite.

Hi,
In that screen print, the Tools palette is horizontal.
In Painter 8 and Painter IX (IX 9.1 and IX.5) the Tools palette is vertical.
Also notice in the lower left corner of the screen print, there's a palette named Controls: Brush and just to the right of center bottom in the screen print, there's a palette named Objects.
The last Painter version that included a horizontal Tools palette, the Controls palette, and the Objects palette was Painter 7. It's hard to read the text at the top of the screen print but it looks like it might be Painter 6.1.
In any case, we couldn't then and can't now change the Tools palette from horizontal to vertical or vertical to horizontal.
If it bothers you to have your Tools palette vertical and taking up horozontal work space on your Painter screen, you can close it and just use the letter keys and other keyboard shortcuts to activate tools in the Tools palette.
You can customize a keyboard shortcut to toggle the Tools palette open and closed in:
Mac - Painter IX > Preferences > Customize Keys
Windows - Edit > Preferences > Customize Keys
I use the F1 key to toggle the Tools palette open and closed.
You'll find the Tools palette letter keys and other keyboard shortcuts listed in the following chapter:
Painter IX Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > Keyboard Shortcuts
