Hi there!

Haven't posted in quite a while. Here's something I just recently finished. Did it for fun and to brush up on my painting skills. Its nothing fancy, just a men-at-arms in German gothic armour holding a poleaxe.

I'd appreciate any constructive feebacks. Cheers!:confident

WOW so simple and effective.

Post more pls!

Do you know good references for this kind of subject matter? I'm also really interested in this stuff. thanks.

Not much to say. From viewing it slowly and looking for any flaws, none were found. I must say, the lighting is great.

You're too modest. Very fine piece.

beautifully rendered, I think the pose is a bit stagnant and the character's right leg looks a bit out of place. Perhaps try rotating the leg back towards the viewer a bit. Nice work though:)

Wow, awesome.

The colouring work is pure perfect and all the textures are simply awesome.

that's some beautiful rendering there, the lighting is fantastisc. you're gonna hate me but i see 2 things that are a little "off" the arms and legs are different sizes from their counterpart. the arm on the viewer's right is much longer than the one on the left.. same with the legs

Simply beautiful. I don't post a ton of priase usually but this piece for some reason smacks me right in the face. Its a good smack... no really.

Anyways.. I think what i find to be the best about this piece is the simplicity and the excellent lighting. Its not overdone, Its just right. People can learn a lot from this piece so thanks for posting it.

Great stuff.. Post more!

Thanks for the crit buddy. I totally agree with you on the limbs, especially the one about the right arm being shorter. Its was bugging me near the end but its a little too late for me to go back now......or could I? Good observation though. I appreciate it.

Also, thanks to everyone else for their compliments ans feedback so far. Cheers!

Hi wraithtd

Very nice picture and overall seems to me historically correct (not usual on this forum ;)). Beside the usual praise about the work there are two things that strike me odd. First I´m not sure about the hips. They seem a bitt oddly angled or maybe the upper body is a little bit too long. Drawing armour occasionally myself I´d think this happened because of some misunderstanding of the cuirass. Second thing is the mail. At the moment it looks as if a pattern has been laid flat over the surface and the mail-parts look more like a stiff and patterned cloth (e.g. brocade). If you look at photos of real mail or have the chance to get one in your hand you can see that the pattern "flows" along form and gravity like a very heavy, flexible cloth. I hope I can make myself understandable

Otherwise a really nice picture fitting in a historic book - maybe like the Osprey ones.

Is the reference taken from a photo? Somehow this picture reminds me of someone ...

I think I speak for most of use here when I say we need to see some more examples of work..... Thanks for sharing

This isn't very gothic, but just rather traditional medieval european. I have to say though, you captured it perfectly. Splendid work you have here. :)

Great Painting...Great painter...goes without saying!

Fipse touched something which I noticed myself. Since there is a kind of folding in the armour-design (at the belly and hip) I had some trouble separating the cloth from the metal, especially the sleeves sort of blends together with the plate, due to the likness in colour.

The halbard (if that is its correct name...) ends just outside the the canvas on both ends, making the man-at-arm look a little behind bars, or locked in position.

Impressive piece yet the same.

spectacular! looks great, and i love the style. Buddy's right leg is suffering tremendous pain though. Not only is the bone broken, but its also out of place, going to hurt like hell when they snap that sucker back in.

Great though, would love to see more work like this ;)

Yeah, I wanted to mention that his foot to the left looks like it may be turned a bit too far... but It could just be me.

This looks fanfreakingtastic!

Very nice indeed! Only one more nitpick to add to the list: the shaft of the poleaxe looks too thick, to the point where he's unable to have a good grip on it (especially the right hand shows this well). The "real thing" wouldn't be much thicker than the sword handle.

I think it looks pretty ok actually, I'm no expert on medeaval weapons, but from what I have seen in museums and stuff, the shafts can be quite thick. I think it looks good on this particular painting, as it makes the weapon look kinda heavy and clumsy, which a poleaxe probably is. Also, if it was thinner, I think his thumb would overlap on his fingers too much when he holds it, and I don't think that would resault in a good grip, quite the opposite. This is just speculations tho, I have never actually held a poleaxe myself. :^^:

Fipse: I know exactly what you mean about the mail undercoat. It was either gonna be rendered out manually, in which case I could dictate the flow of the pattern or use a photo texture. I chose the latter in this case cuz I was too lazy.......;P

Blue: You know what, you're absolutely right about that cuz the style is not fluted enough to be considered 'gothic'. I just have a tendancy of calling any armour Gothic style as long as it has a german sallet. My bad.

Cloister: Great comment about the ends of the poleaxe. Never occured to me untill you mentioned it. A kin eye you have there.

Thestjester, Pixeldragoon: I'll try to snap that sucker back into place.

LoneWolf: I will. Thanks!

Fingers: I think Kaya answered it for me.

Too everyone else, thanks for your comments. Cheers!

I also just noticed (a deep nitpick) The shadow of the poleaxe seems a bit off kilter =\
