howdy! its my first time posting in this section... and what a great section it is!
i feel drawing and painting is the backbone of art and i will take that notion to my grave!...
this is the second painting of this semester...im posting it because its decent ...not decent compaired to good painters but decent for me ...feel ive improved a bit with the handling of the oil paint and hope to continue! i know there are anatomy problems here and there but that will be remedied all in due time ;) also i need to really work on color and subtlies and how color and value creates atmosphere and space ..but once again "all in due time ;)"
c&c
thanks,
-Joshua

you have soft edges and...
soft edges. do you agree?
maybe it's just the scan, but i'd like to see more definition. it's a good painting, otherwise... some really nice descritption of forms and good anatomical knowledge.
her left thigh is very serious, maybe a little too serious.

Very nice man:cool: , is this all you're planning on doing on this?
As it seems from here there are some issues with the right arm and the left thigh.
Love the face, it really shows character, though in my personal opinion maybe the eyes could use some more definition?
Great work:) .

Hey Joshua, I love this painting. Color lighting and brushwork. I have to agree with wietse about her receding arm, actually it is more to do with the torso shoulder arm transition. The only other thing I would love to see fixed are the transition shadows under her nose and on her chin. The front edges on them are too hard. They distract me from all the nice brushwork you have done.
Very nice!

Whoah! major improvement, Josh! YOu are coming to the process of being a great paintersh. The colors are the strong-point of this piece, no doubt. I would still like to see more definition, but this painting is a huge step in the right direction. the world needs more brush-strokes like the ones on her stomach. post more, and maybe you should put up your "dark stuff" painting to accentuate the improvement.

...i don't even know what to say besides thanks guys im happy you like it...
ive been having so much trouble with oils last semester! the funny thing about color ...i did nothing but digitial paint over the summer and it seemed to help my color! ...though in this piece it seem the background colors are not complimenting each other, ah well there is always the next one...
Wietse: i agree ...thanks for the input ...hmm this was a three day painting 3 hours each day... seems like i should of gotten more done...
foster: damn near speachless ...thank you ...would you have any suggestions of what i should look out for while trying to be faster and grabbing those details ...like the ones you spoke of???
Mcnallyism: hey sean! you should do some self portraits to keep up on the medium and post em we would love to see!!!

Hey Josh really nice finished piece, man.
What I meant by serious was something like...
"Oh shit... this drink is serious. Try it."
"Oh man, that is serious!"
It seemed a little big and strong in relation to the rest of the body, although it looks better in the final I think. Anyway, keep it up. Nice work.

i think the new one is great! i really like the dark mood it has. i am still working on my oil painting skills...maybe someday i will be good. how big do you normally paint?

whats up daarken...
thanks...
that last one was 16x20 or something like that...
but when I work large I tend to be way to conservative with my paint and that affects the painting ...soo since I am fairly poor money wise I will be working smaller. my new one 8x10 but thats as small as i will go...hmm thats smaller than i like to go but I have the canvas so i might as well use it. the first one in this thread is 9x12. 8x10 and 9x12 is the smallest i have ever gone...
