Anyone heard of Enya?
Thats pretty awesome stuff, its really instrumental (piano and shit i cant tell) with good singing. The song names are like phantasmagorical/wierd and its cool to see how the music is with the names.
I love Tool and A Perfect Circle(except EMotive) for pure entertainment and inspiration. They get me pumped.
Good call of the HL2 soundtrack aswell.

Ahem...*cracks knuckles*
My list.
Trance & progressive
Kyau vs Albert - made of sun (kva dub mix)
Lost parisians - jump the next train (kva mix)
Whiteroom - the whiteroom (andy moor = teh shit, but he is kind of overusing that square sound he has.)
Andy Moor Pres. Dub Disorder - Tensile (Original Mix)
Max Graham feat. Jessica Riddle - Gone (Almost got me in tears)
Ridgewalkers - Find (the Kva mix is good to, the andy moor mix was lacking imo)
IIo - smooth (airbase mix, swedish sound, swedish quality steel baby)
Sander van Doorn - Dark Roast (Original Mix)
SignalRunners - 3000 Miles Away (ProbSpot Club Mix)
Solar Stone feat. Elizabeth Fields - Speak In Sympathy (Original Mix)
Sauna - mirage (one of the rarest songs ever, and its a shame since it fucking rocks)
The Killers - Mr Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)
The Police - SOS (Sander Van Doorn Remix)
tilt-Twelve (Dousk Mix)
unkle feat ian brown - Reign (way out west mix)
Deepsky - Talk like a Stranger (Markus Schulz Return to Cold
Airbase/the scarab/o-zone/whatever is a guy i have huge respect for, never dissapoints me.
Andain - Beautiful Things
I like to listen to Frontline assembly and their other alias Delerium to. There a few delerium songs out there that have been remixed. svenson and gielen made a good mix out of...that ...er...After all! song. Good shit.
Darkcore & Nu gabber.
Everything from ophidian pritty much hehe, even "pepperspray"
AngerFist is ok he is kind of trying ...well hes trying really fucking hard to be...well hard.
Dj nosferatu
Hamunaptra
I kind of liked Dj tiesto - traffic but after a while i totally lost respect for the guy. Hes a good dj, awesome even. But when it comes to producing he relies way to much on his engineers. hence he doesnt really make his own songs. But theres other big names out there who even BUYS songs from engineers and put their name on it. Therefor you can sometimes hear a song and think "is that really him" well...it isnt. Oh and he buttfucked adagio for strings like no other.
Anyway, i have to much to list.

The Verve had an extended mix to "She's a Superstar" that is one of my favorite tracks to paint to. Kitaro (new age genre) is on the list, depending on my mood I may listen to any hip hop produced by DJ Premier, some of Canibus' stuff just for the crazy lyrics, old stuff from Portishead, Coldplay, Audioslave, Sage Francis, the theme song from Macross Zero (I have several instrumental versions I found online), and a whole bunch of other stuff. I listen to pretty much everything from Classical to New Age to Hip Hop, the only thing I dont like is Country music.
But the Verve, if you can find the 8 minute plus version to "She's a Superstar", give it a listen. The Verve had some great stuff. Oh also Sade, Sweetback, and The Roots.

It depends on the piece for me, really. Whatever puts me in the mood of my character or setting. I'm a real sucker for movie soundtracks (Batman Begins most recently), but also it the song gets me pumped, that works too (Right now it's Renegades of Funk by RATM). I'm working on a sorta "blue" painting right now, so it's been Jeff Buckley, Seether, and Stonesour for that. Back to jammin' out to work-

Good drawing music for me is:
Opera and classical music, and my huge library of movie and video game soundtracks. Nobuo Uematsu, John Williams, Basil Poledoris and Danny Elfman are my favs. Music without words are better for me to draw by. The string and piano tributes to Tool are also very good.
(cuz Tool is f 'ing amazing)

number one on my list for inspiration is tool for sure.
great for imagining visuals.
i also love the thin red line soundtrack, and the soundtrack to heat.
music from m. night shamylan films really help my visual process too for some reason.
i think all of his films are scored by james newton howard.
most stuff by alan silvestri too.
he's done the score for almost all of robert zemekis' films.
film scores overall are really inspiring...if you get the right ones.

Recursive End, I was SO hoping I'd be the first one to mention Daedelus! That guy is one of my favorites and is almost always playing when I'm working on moodier pieces, especially the Exquisite Corpse album. Boards of Canada, of course, Prefuse 73, and Elliott Smith when I really need some hauntingly good stuff.
Favorite movie score soundtracks have got to be The Motorcycle Diaries and Punch Drunk Love (though I wish it wasn't so short).

When i was in art school, the teachers used to put on the new age BS and it drove me nuts, I couldnt concentrate on anything...and heres another, symphonic rock, as in symphonic floyd, symphonic metallica, or metallica being played by a cello quartet, or Megadeath interpreted by two pianos and a harp...music that inspires me to kill.

Somethings are ment to be mixted but not extreme opposite like an harp and metal...

I'm a sucker for pianos... I love songs with a catchy piano playing in the background... I'll get berated for saying this, but Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" and Tupac Shakur's "Changes"/Bruce Hornsby's "That's The Way It Is" (also Tupac's "I Ain't Mad Atcha," but that ain't cheezy like the first two) has got some of the catchiest piano backgrounds... I downloaded all the karaoke versions of these three...
I don't wanna spam this thread with lists, but anything by Yoko Kanno from Arjuna to Uncharted Waters is good enough for me...
By the way, the Enya hate is unwarranted on a music inspiration thread... :(

Queens of the stone age - Lullabies to paralyze
Natascha atlas's latest album - Mishmaoul
and pretty much everything Beatles

Classical music (movie soundtracks, that is). I can't stand listening to lyrics or modern music when working. Vangelis, Harry Gregson-Williams (Spy-Game, Kingdom Of Heaven), Hans Zimmer (Last Samurai soundtrack, such a blast), James Horner, James Newton Howard, Elliot Goldenthal.
I bought all 4 soundtrack CDs available for the Alien Trilogy. Still waiting for Resurrection tho, it's shipped from California... This movie series has some of the most astonishing music of all time, especially Alien³.

Hm, I've a vast variety of artists I listen to, it all really depends on the mood I want to convey with the piece.
Marilyn Manson is really a cornerstone for me though; his music reminds me that art should be dangerous and should always be approached in ways that others maybe wouldn't. Same with Bjork.
If it's a more angry, violent piece, in goes some Slayer, Behemoth, Cradle of Filth, etc. If it's somber, then maybe some Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Bjork, Nick Cave, David Bowie; if it's sexy, then Manson, or Peaches, or something groove oriented. I've got a very ecclectic taste, but there are only a certain few artists who actually inspire me to create and aid me in creating.
For anyone looking for inspiration if ever they want to make a somber, morose piece, look no further than Nine Inch Nails' "Still" EP.

A lot of classical music. There was a really old rendition of Greensleeves that I liked a while ago. Depression cello solos, oh man, those are gold.
Bands? "Godspeed You! Black Emperor" does the brain good. Espeically "dead flag blues". It fuels my post-apocalyptica fascination.
Tool. Because tool kicks ass.
Neutral milk hotel - weeeiirrdd.
Xiuxiu - cute, creepy.
Aphex twin makes me think of Chris Cunningham and his work makes me spooge in my pants.
