I don't go to school anymore, so this is a great way to keep up with the drawing i should be doing to stay on a steady path of improvement. Please tell me about criticisms you might have or even ideas you'd like to see. Thanks again. Leave me a comment and rate my thread!

Got some great things going here, like how you use contrast, especially on the faces, some pretty cool designs too. Keep posting.

Yo, JohnBoy! These are looking good! You seem to have a good handle on all sorts of subjects. Great pencil renders, figures and mechanical design! Art school, schmart school! You're obviously dedicated to improvement and don't need to get yourself into life debt to prove anything.

I'm not sure if you're aware of it but we have a thread going here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=21945&goto=lastpost) for Seattle-based artists to get together to sketch, chat, compete. We're actually meeting tonight for a little Seattle throw-down.

Irregardless, you've got a great start in this sketchbook and keep posting!

Not sure what you mean, but...okay! I try to be myself. Sometimes it's fun to have someone test you or give you an idea to work on. after all, it's WHAT you draw not how you draw it, and before i started this thread i was a bit want for things that would keep my interest. Now i can't wait to have an idea turn out good so i can post again.:)...wherever that idea may have come from.

Your pencil work is strong, and your knowledge of anatomy is coming along nicely. The sketch of the woman on ya doodle page with the spaceships is fantastic, so simple but beautiful. Keep working hard fellow aRtisT.

Wow. been a while since I've actually posted some art. The whole point of this thread is to kind of build a portfolio so i can stop working at the animal clinic/cleaning up dog-poo and get a real job making art/ enjoying my life. This in mind, i have been working really hard on these anatomy pieces to put into a portfolio. this one took all day and night (approx. 10 hours) There are more just like this in the works. hope to do a whole series. just like in school, but better. Hope you enjoy.

[EDIT] OK. So scanning these things is proving impractical but you get the idea -36x48-. as soon as i can scan these things down to kinko's or something, i'll show you all the work i put into these.

Hey John! Great pencil rendering on the skull. I can't tell about the one one the right, but the left one is a bit skewed. Whoever's skull that was must have been tilting their head their whole life.

I think that your pencil renders are top notch... you should pick up a pen and start crosshatching.

Take it easy.

That skull looks very realistic!
Nice muscle-study on the torso as well :)

Thanks for taking a look at my SB.
I like the dreamy cartoons in post 4 the most.
Your knowledge of anatomy is strong indeed - you also have a good notion of the mass of the muscles.
The skull seems a bit off to me: edges of eye sockets are too sharp; the back part seems wrong and ears go way too low; but i presume you copied an existing drawing?
Anyway good work overall - keep on going!

I like i like it. I saw ur post about ur interest in tech drawing, and im here to give u a few pointers on just that. First of all, the use of contour lines is a MUST on tech, unless u r doing shading. but still, contour lines will add alot to any tech drawing. even panel lines. also. Watch these dvd's Gnomon Workshop (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/sro04.html)... If you were to only watch one, make it drawing the drawing hovercraft one, because, well, its amazing. you will be a better tech drawer after it. Keep practicing buddy! good luck!

Hey man, Thanks for dropping by my book,

Dang you got some good anatomy here, Your shading on those last skull and torso looks increcible, and looks like that took alot of patience, My favorite is that bike like tech thing you got, is that markers?

Hey keep up this art work, its good stuff.

Joe.

Anticonner and Bartovan:you're totally right. i copied this from another drawing that may have been off, so i'll just let it be :)

mbetteker: thanks man. i'll definitly check that out. preview looked neat.

Meats: my digi-cam is in the pawn shop! long story.

Mr-Joe: Yeah. i used to be pretty good w/ markers and stuff. i should be practicing that stuff more, i guess.

Thanks, everyone for the support. here's a femme-boxer from this morning.

Snap, dude. The rendering of those anatomy studies up there is top notch, and this femme-boxer is pretty whoop-ass, too. Would love to see some more quick stuff w/ color, like this un (http://jpeckham.250free.com/wash.jpg). Keep it up mang!

good updates bro. holla to the enviros. one small thing i noticed, try to achieve some more depth by fading the background, line weights, ect. enviros are all about depth. if you accidently puke on your page and you achieve some depth, dont worry you've started an environment! anyhow, good start. id like to see some more. i see some spaceships doodles in there. we need more spaceship artist around here, wanna join me? btw, nice anatomy renders. keep posting.

take care,
ryan

i really like what style your art is heading. Especially the femme boxer.
The only thing about the last portrait is maybe try to measure the proportions out and compair where different parts are to other areas.
other than that, i cant think of anything else.
keep it up.

August 28th, 2006, 04:25 PM
hey ma,
you have some really good stuff going on here.
some of these blow me away.

maybe a good tip somebody once gave to me is 'always use the whole page'
dont draw bits of cool shit here and there.. make the whole page work as one.. try to compose the sketches into one harmonyous composition.. it help with learning composition allot.. (and it makes your sketchbook look a lot better)

dont underestimate design i guess is the moral.. its a big big thing..

anyways..

really cool stuff here.. and keep it up.. you'll grow far

J.Peckham

Andy P: thanks for the incouragement
Ryan: No spaceships this time
(c): Thanks
Kuro: I should've taken more time, but the job called for three minute sketches. didn't get it by the way i suck at characatures, but i wanted to give it a shot.
Wi2: I put some thought into what you said and designed this one with a 50/50 composition in mind.

Damn, man, you picked up on the wacom damn quick. Once your start playin with layers, opacity, and junk I think you'll really take to it. I think the figure on top has more going for it, there's more economy of line and brush strokes. Nice start down that road, and your most recent pencils are lookin awesome!

Good work with those big anatomy studies. I also like the contrast of realism and style in the femme-boxer, and several of the other character drawings. The main issue I'm noticing is with the lighting, it was most obvious here http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f137/peckerman101/new10.jpg. His cheek should be in halftone lighter than the side of his face and head which would be in shadow. It occurs quite a bit that the lights and shadows aren't seperated, so it's hard to tell halftone from shadow. Another tip is: never use concave lines on the figure, there are a few exceptions, but generally they give a wobbly amateurish appearance, and confuse the relationship of figure and ground.
