Can anyone explain basic cell shading technique in PS. I know it's with changing color percentages in The Color Selection window (I believe), but after that I'm lost. Can anyone enlighten?

Don't worry about colour percentages. My favaorite and cleanest way to nice clean cell shading is to path out shadows and path out highlights. Once you'ce selected them use Hue/Sat to lighten and darken areas. Feel free to change the saturation on certain colours to get the right effect. If you are working on a bright and cheery pic use Brightness/contrast instead -it gives you richer more saturatated look.

What is it your're looking to find out about cell shading? If you think of the right questions to describe your problems - we might able to help! :confident

Hey Visions, are you looking for a particular style like (salaryman or cheeks 74). Salary left a tut on his SB, might have to dig around for it, but it's there...might shed some light on his process. As for cheeks...he's given away a couple of his secrets but no firmed up tut as I have come across. There were some process shots on his old threads but don't know how much that would help. I'll keep an eye out for ya.
Cheers!

You could use Scott Robertson's "halfway to black" system. It doesn't apply to just cell shading but it's a good system to help choose values.

Hey rogfa, got a link?...or is it a DVD or some other media?
Sounds pretty interesting.

Yeah, it's discussed a lot on his rendering dvds and he goes over it a little on the lecture notes on the environment one. But it's basically whatever value you decide something is, the shadow side is "halfway to black".
I use 0 to 9 to describe my value scale, 0 is the lightest value, 9 the darkest.
So if you have a box with a light source above it. The top is getting the most light. The top you give it a value of 0. Then the shadow side is a 5 on the value scale. The other side of the box which is still in the light side is given a value in between the two, say 2.5 or 3.
Scott uses this system to render simple and complex objects but I use it in my daily painting for everything. I posted a comment to another thread and did a little paintover to help explain it. (LINK (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=68888)) I have to say I really like working with this in mind because it helps me never to go into black. I'm always going halfway to black. So, if I have a dark area and need to put in a cast shadow I eyedrop the dark area and then move the slider, you guessed it!, halfway to black.
You can PM me if you have any more questions I don't want to hijack Mr. Vision's thread.

Hmm mmm...
Well you might try just putting in a good old normal local color on one layer, a little less intense that you'd think in full sunlight. Then adding the shadows on top with a multiply layer with the proper color (you might just plop something down and then tweak it with cntl+u). Then over that layer adding an overlay layer for the highlights (rather full-light I suppose), again with the proper color (same thing, plop and tweak!). Then painting in normally what you need, as well as speculars or whatever...
Ok, that's not exactly cell shaded. But is similar.. let me know and I'll dig up an example or two. Oh and I think Phuzion posted a psd in ... maybe his exclusive sketchbook along these lines?
