*clears throat*

Well, I just so happen to go there and, personally, I think it's an amazing school. The teachers range from the hilarious to the horrid, but that's to be expected from any school you'll ever possibly attend. There are plenty of talented kids in every major to inspire you to do better, and most of the teachers are very helpful when it comes to homework/classwork. As for Savannah itself, it's a great city-- yes, city, it's not the sleepy Southern town folks take it for-- with people who are incredibly kind and will always greet you with a smile. A smile that should be returned, because Savannah folks think SCAD kids are annoying enough as it is.

It's an easy town to get around in too. The school has a private bus system that takes you to all the class buildings and dorms, and the city has a public system that takes you everywhere else. I haven't met a person at school yet who had a complaint to make about Savannah, which is always a good sign.

What major were you thinking of going there for?

Another (former) SCADite here. Just got finished putting in my four years down there. All in all I'm satisfied with the education I got there with a few reservations. I had a great experience there but I dont feel I learned everything I wanted to learn in order to be really prepared to start a professional career in the arts. I was an illustration major though and, as it is, it takes most people a couple years out of school to get their career going so take that for what its worth. There are things I loved about it and things I didnt like so much. You're going to get an education that I think is pretty comparable to what you would find in most big art schools. So I'd recommend it. If you have any more specific questions just let me know. I worked for the school while I was attending (doing orientation and tours and such) so I know the place pretty well. Good luck in your college search.

I've got a question. Recently I was considering MCAD, but after reading a few of Mirana's posts, I was sold on the idea of SCAD. I was talking with a co-worker about this, and his advice was saddening. Turns out, in his opinon at least, Georgia isn't a very good place to be if your... of a darker skin tone.... shall we say. I would think that in a city the size of Savanna this sort of thing isn't to bad, but I'm a hermit, so how the hell should I know.
Ahh, race and money. The two things I've been (almost) comnpletely unconcerned with are now a few of my biggest stumbling blocks. (you know, besides a lack of skill on my part...heh)

I think regardless of whatever art school you go to, there's no way they can prepare you for the real world. School and practical experience are two entirely separate worlds. Also as an artist, you'll ALWAYS want more. What you thought was the do-all end-all last week doesn't satisfy you anymore (just think back to the stuff you did in high school that you thought was scholarship material! Eek!). Schools are just platforms to the next level in everyone's development. No school can adequately prepare you for the rigors and demands of the real world- one cab just hope to be wise enough during those four+ years to soak up enough knowledge to cope & develop more.

senira- thanks alot, that information was very helpful, lol im actually looking forward to having some normal teachers ive been stuck with a bunch of crazy ones throughout school. thanks for the info on the transportation i needed that aswell, well at first i was thinking about going to the chicago art institute for game art and design but then i kept hearing all these wonderful things about SCAD and i think want my major illistration

Jedmo- congratulations, i am thinking about the same major as you so i will be taking you up on what you said about asking some more specific questions a bit later. thanks for your advice

derram- lol i dont think i have to worry about that im a white boy

storyboard dave- thanks that was helpful, i had recently met a guy my family knows that went to SCAD and told me some information and he basically was saying what your saying and i thought about it and im probably going to go to a junior college to get a better portfolio and then go to SCAD so i can get better and better

deadpool- Hm. SCAD's portfolio requirements are...lenient. Yes. That's a nice way of putting it. There are folks who pretty much get in on a song, so if your plan is to go to Junior college solely to have time to build up your portfolio, then I wouldn't recommend it unless you really need the extra pieces. If you want to go so that you can knock out some of your General ed. classes than that's up to you; however, keep in mind that the more lecture classes (any class where you're not doing art) you knock out in advance, the more studios you'll have to take at a time. 3 studios during one quarter does not equal fun. Or so I'm told; I'll be discovering the joys of it myself some time this year, so I'll have to get back to you on that.

Derram-- What made your co-worker think that? I'm black and I've never had a problem in Savannah; I haven't heard any complaints from any of the other (Admittedly few) black SCAD students either. You've got to keep in mind that 70% of downtown Savannah is pretty much the ghetto, (hell, there was a drive-by across from our dorm last year) so anyone with racial issues would be well advised not to publicise them, at least in that area of the city. I'm sure there's plenty of racist folks about-- it IS the South after all-- but they don't seem to make a difference. Everyone in Savannah's been as sweet as pie to me. I'd seriously consider living there if they had any animation or illustration companies down that way.

I was planning on attending SCAD. It looks like a solid school. I didn't send my porfolio but I was still accepted. Funny thing is though, turns out I'll be moving from my home in FL to ....Savannah lol. I was there last week and I felt people there were very nice. Im black also. Everyone I met was helpful and courteous. That doesnt mean feelings couldnt just be hidden, but thats not my issue. Nice place, lottsa trees and bricks.

There are a lot of very good art schools that are fairly easy to get into. *cough*ACADMEYOFARTCOLLEGE*cough

There's one fact that true about any school you go to, or anything you ever try to learn: You're only going to get back what you put in to it. I know kids who do amazing work, give it their all and have done great things during their years there, and I know other kids who are on the verge of failing out and they've only held on this long because their parents made them go to college.

The point is, if you're serious about what you want to do then SCAD, or any school, will give you what you need to succeed. Don't let the admissions policy deter you or be your sole deciding factor.

Derram - I can't imagine why your co-worker thought that. Being black does not make you a minority in Savannah (or Atlanta, for that matter). Our current mayor is black, as well as...50-70%? of the City Council. You should have no problems at all and I'm sorry that someone made you worried about that.

Deadpool - Check out the Alumni (http://scad.edu/admission/awards/alumni.cfm) part of the SCAD website. There are more awards and high-profile alumni than I care to read through. Also, it's easy to get into--which means everyone has a chance to succeed. It is NOT easy to stay in, or to graduate. It is a huge amount of work.
