Cartoon Brew found some amazing concept art for the new movie Monster House. The artists' name is Chris Appelhans. Some of this guy’s stuff just blew me away. Here is the link for the movie artwork and be sure to check out the second link for the guy’s other artwork. The Alice in Wonderland stuff kicks ass.

Thanks for the heads up - I hadn't checked out his site for some time...
He was at Art Center at around the time I was attending and even back then he was doing some great work... and this stuff is :eyecandy: .
If I remember correctly, his work can also be found in the second book of "flight" which was a collection of short comics by different artists...

Hah, no no.. I quite enjoy your work. If anything it surpases those standards (ass kiss). I just didn't know you're a member of our illustrious little club =P

Are you still in LA? Or have you moved on to brighter less smogified places?

Sinix - im not sure if youre in Southern CA. (or do you mean CA.org in your location box?)- I believe he still shows his work once in a while at the Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra... just google it for more info - some other amazing artists there too.

helium - yes I live in Altadena, working in Santa Monica, and still taking classes after AC if you can believe it ..at LAAFA in Sherman oaks.

This is really beautiful stuff. the angles and the lighting just sat the mood so well. I look forward to seeing the movie now. I just spent 20 minutes showing a co-worker this.

I just love these. When I first saw the trailer for this movie I thought that the designs were done by C.F. Payne. I don't know why really, I guess the overall color shemes and the kids heads were shaped & stylized in a similar way to Payne's style. I didn't see his name anywhere so it's good to know who really did the concepts. Awesome website. (I love that Superman animation too)

For anyone who hasn't seen the movie: GO! GO NOW! it's good. I saw it in 3D at ComicCon and it was truly amazing. It's almost like the Goonies in a way. It has that '80's feel to it. I wasn't even really moved by the trailers, but it turned out to be one of the better films this year.

Oh. and there's concept art book out there too. They had it at the con as well. It's actually very well done. I think this is it here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1933784008/sr=1-1/qid=1154707033/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-2559135-3925715?ie=UTF8&s=books

I agree... but I'll watch the DVD when it comes out. It looks like something kids and adults will like. It seems a lot of cartoons seem to have more "adult" ideas hidden in them that a little kid might not know. For example, I saw some cartoon with a 2001: A Space Odyssey reference in it. I thought that was pretty cool.

his stuff is extremely inspiring, he has a great sense of camera placement and storytelling ------- they managed to capture almost all his design into the film, from what i can tell.

good find for sure

Yup, just picked it up at borders.

I think it may very well be the best concept art of book...like..ever. I love the tracing-sheet page of progressions of expressions from actor to cg movie. The little post-it note things, the trading cards, the color theory of each scene.

Even if you haven't seen the movie, I think everyone needs to get it.
