Hey guys,

I've been drawing mostly human figures most of my life now, but I'm also an enthusiast of cars, and I would like to know how guys like Gezstar or any one of you guys who draw cars or other similar types of vehicles do this. What are its basic proportions? How do you design these( industrial design peeps here)? How can you not make it look so stiff and box-like(This is a problem when I use perspective)? I'm particularly interested in stylish POVs like what you see in car magz which feature Japanese tuner cars.

THanks a lot!

I study Industrial Design, first year so haven't drawn many cars yet, but most important thing is to really construct everything, starting with cubes (for cars two cubes next to eachother will be the most likely setup) and then bringing details into the drawing. Key thing is ofcourse to keep the lines of the constuction-helps, like the cubes, really thin, so it doesn't really show in the final drawing. That way your perspective will be correct and you will still have the freedom to design a car to your own liking, and the freedom to correctly define your perspective without getting lost in the process and making a mess of it.

Also don't try to draw a car in one time. Make studies from different angles and then make the final drawing if your sure about the shapes and proportions.

I draw with fineliners, which are great for me because your get more confident drawing straight and thin lines really fast, something maybe you don't really learn drawing human figures (this I don't know for sure because I don't draw human figures). As for the rendering, I use pantone markers and crayons because it enables you to make cool shades and highlights. Hope this helps, maybe someone else has some more tips for you.

I am someone who seems to think he knows it all, but I dont. So take my advice with a pinch of salt and throw it in my eyes!

Well with the prologue over, lets look at your questions. As a student in fine art mostly, but diverse in many mediums, I tend to sketch thinks from life to get to know my subject. If you draw human figures then this wont be too difficult. Get yourself some pencils (3B/4B for sketching) and start sketching cars on your street!

I know, I know, these aren't design sheets, and they are not meant to be! It's just to get your brain to understand angles and mechanical construction. One you have sketched a few and seem happy with them , go onto cheap biro pens, and sketch with them, but this time try to get things more accurate, and with thinner lines, shade if it helps. Then go onto fine liners, but this time try to draw the car without any shading and with crisp lines. Remember, all these need to be done from observation with cars on your street!

Also for more homework, go on the internet and look up cars, or look in your mags, and study the different models and styles. With your imagination try to take some of the features of your best cars and design a new car. But keep proportions in mind and perspectives. If you dont know how to use perspectives, you should! With designing cars, comes alot of math and lines, so I hate it, bye.
