DEADLINE
SUNDAY, JULY 16th
The way the deadline works: if deadline is on a Sunday and your image is posted on that Sunday 23:59 your local time it's a good entry.
In fact - as long there is Sunday somewhere on the planet your entry is ok. I will make the poll sometimes Monday afternoon my time (GMT +2) yet i'll have a look at the last entries.
--------------------------
Theodios - Sci-Fi - Orthodox Patriarch of the New World
So much time has passed since the world destroyed itself. So much time in the dark.
Theodios was impressively young when he started preaching - at 12 he had already mature audience. At 14 he was praised in more then 5 of the new cities.
He is the one who brought faith and united all of the west cities in the new world. He is brave, wise, guided by The Lord and ... ready to fight.
The new orthodox symbols are everywhere.. and Theodios is the new prophet.
The "Governments" have a hard time accepting his power.. he knows it.. he is ready.
Now... concept! :yayca:

[edit] - make sure you insert the orthodox elements. entries may not be taken to the poll if they don't follow the topic.
we don;t want just another generic character with a fancy name. see the "non spanish toreador" thread for a BAD example.

[edit 2] - it is EASTERN ORTHODOX (russian, greek, etc...) - becouse... it's rich and unused. ;)

Final.

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/3198/rynchow33finaldx6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

In a post-apocalyptic world where humanity cowered on the brink of extinction, Theodios became a powerful icon. To the people, he was hope. To darker powers, he was an influential puppet. The deities of hell, seeking a way to end mankind, manipulated the once good-hearted Theodios to their will. Theodios was hungry for power, and the dark ones took advantage of that. Mortals, no matter how holy, are still susceptible to corruption.

With malice in his corrupted heart, Theodios approaches the Government buildings. With no leaders, the likes of mankind cannot hope to survive the onslaught of the dark gods.

I'm in! Same as Ryn, just dropping by so I don't pusss-out.

FINAL- cutting it close on this one. I know I'm screwed based on the line-up, but I'm proud I finished.

http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/6677/cupofjoechow23theodioscz5.jpg

Theodios started his life as a religious leader from a young age. Those around him soon noticed his wisdom in theological matters. He soon became a world-wide religious icon. As age took it’s toll, Theodios fell back on technology in order to extend his life, to “Complete what I was sent here to do.” However, in light of his recent, and seemingly unnecessary technological enhancements, both his followers and the government are at a loss as to his next move.

You suffer the spiritual disease of self.
You paralyze yourselves with choice.
Surrender it and be free of your shackles.
Wage the war within. Find the light inside the darkness,
And be saved.

Oblio: I want to ask before I take this further... is there a particular religion you want this character based in? Orthodoxy, to me at least, suggests degree of adherence to each religions own traditional writings... each can regard itself as orthodox and everyone else as heretical. I'm going (based on the sci-fi/new prophet description) on the assumption that this is a new religion that considers Theodios' teachings orthodox. Just checking.

But his followers couldn't accept that. Using Science they brought him back.He was their guiding star. But He remembers his death. He remembers judgement. And he remembers the paradise that was stolen from him. All he wants to do is go home . But his followers have other plans.

So yeah. first of all i did the first sketch "kinda going for an off base pink floyd the wall kinda look" then the character gets changed to eastern orthadox. So I decided to do a little revision. also i have noticed no one really seems to give a shit about the cartooning style so I guess i'll conform.

NeoRepto, love that initial sketch. The combination of the angle and the cropping of the vid-screen is a really nice touch.

Michael Jaecks
July 11th, 2006, 08:41 AM
Hmmmm. If its eastern orthodox, then I don't think my sketch works. Too 1984, totalitarian with the telescreen. I'm glad asked, because that's what I think of when someone starts talking about future religions.

You know Oblio, if you wanted someone to really do this right, they'd have to paint up their entry like a Russian icon. But if someone attempts that... no crits on the anatomy distortion... and no crits on it looking too flat. Although they would have to master the art of gold leaf in Photoshop ;)

edit: THANKS Lord Dubu. Funny you were writing that as I was writing that I didnt think it fit the revised topic description.
I'd like to use the sketch and was planning to extend it horizontally with more telescreens of the guys shadowy face, but I just don't think of eastern orthodox as lording over people quite in the same way. I was originally thinking of something sort of CyberBaptist. or something like the Christian Bale movie Equilibrium where all the Tetragrammaton Clerics are crazy skilled martial artists... none of that is very eastern orthodox.

Oh well. Time to pop Francis Ford Copolla's Dracula into the DVD player...

Lord Dubu

I've never read Doestoevsky. Can you elaborate a little, point me in the direction of what you've read?

When I think of religion really lording over the masses, I get a real baptist or protestant sort of idea. Evangelical ministeries... messages getting beamed onto your TV or computer whether or not you're looking for it. None of the other major religions seem to me to have such a rigorous commercial advertising budget... I dunno. It is a future religion after all. It could go anywhere.

When I think of religion really lording over the masses, I get a real baptist or protestant sort of idea.

That's kind of ironic to me, given that baptists never ruled the Roman empire, or controlled Europian governments as did the catholics of the middle ages. As to Dostoevsky and eastern orthodoxy, one of the books central themes is the role of religion and government and how very far the church has gone (in pursuit of power) away from Christ's actual message. If you can find it online, the "Grand Inquisitor" passage of "Brother's Karamozov" is a great satirical summary of that argument.

All that being said, you're concepting a futuristic incarnation of eastern-orthodoxy. One born in an age with more advanced technology than the old-school version. I'd say the traditions of your new orthodoxy should reflect a glimmer of the old roots with a nice 2.0 infusion of modern media... after all what better method to get your message out to the new masses quickly than using the tools those who failed before you didn't have.

IMHO anyway :)

I see what you mean about catholics in the grand scheme of human history. However today, at least in the US, when a religious group takes an overtly political stand in the media I think of the religious right as its stationed in the Bible Belt. I'm talking about the Pat Robertsons and Jerry Falwells... the ones that start TV networks, the ones that think they can speak for others publicly or even make a serious bid to run for public office. Its a 20th-21st century phenomenon, certainly. I suppose because its contemporary, its why I immediately think they hold the seeds of this sci-fi religion I'm trying to imagine.

I'll look up "the Grand Inquisitor." Even if I can't find it as written, I'm sure wikipedia will have something... or at least some external links...

WOOHOO! Eastern Orthodox was exactly where I was getting all my references from, so that works out delightfully for me.

Of course, now I'll have to work twice as hard to make my character original. Combining Sci-fi and religion is proving harder than I thought.

Not to drag on this confusion, but if the inclusion of the symbol is necessary, and it's a "new orthodox", how directly must it come from current or past Eastern Orthodox religion?

Well....very quick sketch I'm puttin up.

quick question. Should the character be in a cool pose that looks like a finished "art piece"? or can it be in the standard 3d animation concept piece.

Snuggles
July 11th, 2006, 11:15 PM
I think the idea for CHOW is that you want to make an image that gives us a strong 'feeling' of the character, as opposed to just being "this is what the character 'looks like'." I'd think a small scene or at least an evocative pose is usually the best for doing so.

FINAL.

http://www.marlonart.nl/web/Art2_CHOW33_patriarch.jpg

Theodios got hurt during the war when he was still a little boy. He got hit by a bomb, which took off both his arms. After the incident he stayed in coma for 2 weeks. During this state he gained contact with God, the allmighty. The rest is history. During his journey through the lands he found two young babies, twins, near an abandonned church. They were adopted by Theodios and became his most loyal followers. The sword is the sword of God, symbol of his devotion to fight for his believes. The book and the staff represent Faith. The text says "The faith is orthodox".

Hey hey, first chow. Rush job in the end but fun to do.

Alas I never made it into the Orc CHOW (for which I was sadly disappointed) but I'm going to make a serious effort to finish up for this one... Here's a WIP to hold my place.

Notation about symbolism of the cross: It's eastern orthodox with a minor twist. As per comments by a few artists above, I saw fit to alter the symbolism to concur with the ever-changing nature of society, especially given the apocalyptic background theme. Feel free to address any comments via PM, thanks!

Young 15 year old Theodios, with the Golden Voice of God, is striking out against the "government" of the egalitarian institution. Happy though the people may be, they are in spiritual peril, so this young crusader has taken it upon himself to instill a holy, properly stratified, society.

EDIT: And here's the final version. I wanted to put in a scene of some sort, but I just couldn't visualize what I wanted back there. Anywho, a description:

Theodin's fame is exceeded only by his wealth, though you would not know it to look upon him. His dress is simple to reflect the conditions in which his followers live; his adornments are few, and even the weapon he carries is a relic of the old days.

But plain does not equate to foolish, and he has taken measures against attacks. The ring, gem and bracelet he wears on either hand and wrist are a known as the Stigmata, a micro weapons system capable of firing lasers from the right-hand gem and engaging a shield from the left. They were a custom-order system funded by the many generous donations his devotees have made over the years-- after all, how can he lead them if he's no longer alive?

Yeah, that's all I got for the moment. Here's to my first CHOW entry: Huzzah!

I'm working on mine...I was having perspective issues and head issues but I hope to have something up by tomorrow night. Seeing how I have no practice whatsoever in digipaint, I'm just posting the B/W and hopefully I can shade it and render it well enough to make it to submission...if it gets accepted...

Here's My viewpoint on Theodios: If you observe any religious organization, you see they try to pay homage to their roots in there traditions and attire. Theodios, upon recieving a vision of the self-destruction of mankind, raided museums and churches, searching for and taking relics that would help remind his future followers of their past. His attire consists of nothing but relics, his holy armor, to protect him from whatever the Evil One may throw at him. He bears the marks of the stigmata, although it is rumored they may be self-inflicted. His sword is forged out of golden remains from the temples in Jerusalem. Whether crazy or devote, Theodios knows he has been chosen by God to bring back His children.

I'm gonna elaborate on this and touch it up before I submit it. Anyways, that's pretty much my take on this -

MR VISIONS love it! great piece
but despite the description he has no sci fi elements (although mine may be abit too sci fi)
art 2 good concept but i have some problems with the drapery
Octo
good idea but waaaaay too bright
perhaps you should work on your palette choices
too many colors without any cohesion
Wingless angel
too much path work
either illustrator or ps
i think i would like it better if it was drawn (even if digital)
by hand
Dominus...WTF ive seen alot of your work and i think you are really coming into your own here this is really good

First one here ^^

2140 A.D. : Around 50 years ago followers of the orthodox persuasion wiped out all remaing religions and governments in order to bring their genetic creation called "Theodios" into power and introduce him as the patriarch of the new world. Artificially kept alive by "mother" he´s connected to everyone´s mind to ensure the maintenance of their totalitarian state.

Hide: I like the armor design and the texture a lot

Mr Visions: Awesome drawing man!

neorepto: Are you gonna finish this one? Looks quite cool imho.

Fellah, Trevor: Awesome!

Thanks alot guys for all the feedback and support. I do see a lack of sci - fi elements in mine, especially see others how they've taken that theme to extremely in different areas, each one so unique. I tried pushing the relic thing with mine, but I might try drawing another pic to go along with this one to show what's under the robes. The first pic I put a varnish on top of to see how it would turn out, and I liked the results, although it makes it hard to draw on top of (ha). But, this topic was super interesting, so back to the drawing board. All these entries kick bootah! and the turn out is great. I'm constantly waiting on updates. Keep up the great work guys -

Theodios
Theodios was raised by his mother in the slums of little bethlehem were he was raised amidst the scum of the earth. he lived in the back of a stripclub where his mother Eva was famous by performing the infamous appletrick.... He found his peace in a small church in the middle of the slums where he started his preaching career at an age of 12 and he earned the name jimmy jerusalem. His remarkable speeching capability lured in the low life of the town were he would fill their hearts with hope. At an age of 15 his preaching sessions were caught on by the masses. After seeing all the foul stuff that went on in little Bethlehem he eagerly made sure no temptation a boy his age could have would lure him into oblivion. He then adopted the name Theodios.

After growing up he was synomonous for a hope of a better life in a world gone wrong. The government could not do anything against it, but wait at the moment he would overthrow the government. Theodios uses his jesus stick which amplifies his voice to reach the ears of thousands and has a guiding halo that makes him as visible as the northern star at a clear night. When people see the halo shining they gather and travel to the light and listen to the words of Theodios, and the government looks down at the light in fright from their Ivory tower in the center of town.

His eyes have been given so he can see, his love offered for a higher power's purpose. years of hardening conditions soften his heart. The political powers that be, can crush his bones but in turn will immortalized his story, so they don't. In the dark dismal world of nothingness his optimistic faith heals.

Addition: After the second great fall of man, Theodios was left greatly wounded, on the brink of death. Salvaged from man vast technology before the war, He was able to be saved by doctors who supported his cause. Theodios likes to keep his repairs hidden, so that no weakness is shown.

That's it for me this week. Great Job guys, and best of luck -

description:
He was in constant conversation with God so the people always trusted him, although he wasn’t born with this blessing like the prophets of the past. When Theodios was a very young child, his village had been pillaged and his family killed but he managed to survive with what was at first thought to be a critical wound to the skull. After Theodios regained consciousness, people realized that the weapon hadn't hurt him at all but, it had trepanned him. It was through this whole in his skull that Theodios first heard the voice of God. After this miracle, his disciples started trepanning themselves as well and a new symbol emerged. It was similar to the cross but with a circle instead of a horizontal bar, this symbolized a future of open conversation with God.
