I found the link off ArtRenewal.org's website. It's made by the The Academy of Realist Art in Canada. Some of their student work is really beautiful but the dvd is a little pricey ($95US).

Thanks!

You might be better off getting Glenn Vilppu's dvd's. They're cheaper, and Vilppu is the man!

I have seen the DVD and the information is quite good. Additionally, it is well produced. I would recommend it if an academic way of drawing appeals to you.

Thanks ParkerD, Vilppu has a lot of selections. I'm not sure where I want to start with them.

Thanks Flynt, I want to start drawing more from life and I think this will help. Thanks for the info.

a hundred bucks..?

Yeah, it's a little on the expensive side. That's the only thing holding me back so far but the only thing I have access to where I live is buying books from amazon. And if Flynt gives it a thumbs up you know it's got to be good.

Hey Roger

I have quite a few vilppu dvd's and his basic's teaching is very good. He's a big advocate of drawing from the model as you would at work. He teaches a lot of animators - so if your goal is to draw figures without a model then his stuff may be worth a look. The dvd's are poorly presented compared to the likes of gnomon - but i still think they are worth it and the information is SOLID.

A good start would be to get his drawing manual first, and buy maybe the gesture lecture along with it?

if u want any tips on what dvd's are better than others let me know if you want?

cheers

Hey,

I bought that Academy DVD (I had a little bit of a budget for an art class I was teaching and got reimbursed for it. Can't say I would have bought it with my own dough)

It is a good solid demo of strict academic drawing: 1 standing model- female (nekkid), long pose, measuring proportions first using a knitting needle as a plumb line. Lots of time spent on measuring proportions.

They show most of the construction of the figure on the page, and the production values are good, but they do skip over a bit of the shading and detail work.

The cat doing the drawing and talking (Fernando F.) uses carbon pencils sharpened to a really, really long point, and there are some extra short bits at the beginning of the DVD about preparing the pencils and supplies (using a brush to blend versus a blending stump) and some quick (very brief) practice suggestions at the end.

I get their email newsletter and the most recent one said that they were going to drop the price in the near future and try to clear out their stock because they've got a couple of new things coming out soon.

I'd wait for the sale and see how cheap you can get it.

I'll post again if/when they send out a sale notification.

I have not seen any of the Vilppu but it looks good, and dang there are a lot of choices.
