You wanted another Last Man Standing Thunderdome. You wanted it bigger, better, stinkier, and nastier than the first (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47680). Well, Sallies, I think it's safe to say you got it.
271 initial contenders over 4 rounds of randomly paired mayhem. 396 new pieces of artwork. 1 winner. And not one 1-on-1 battle.
The Round Breakdown:
Round I: 271 initial contenders in 3 (one 4) man battles
Round II: 90 contenders in 3 man battles
Round III: 30 contenders in 6 man battles
Final Round IV: 5 contenders, one winner.
Topic:
Welcome to the Beginning of the End
You can take this in any direction you want. Keep in mind that the goal of the competition is to create a full-fledged illustration every round, so you'll be judged on your technique, concept, designs, and narrative.
Some of the top industry talent this fine forum has to offer will be judging each round and deciding who advance to the next round. The voting will be a point system; 3 points for 1st place, 2 for 2nd, and 1 for 3rd.
Judges for Round One:
Irene Gallo
DSIllustration
Elwell
davi
Mon
N8 Van Dyke
more to come...
Important note about the thread layout:
There is one match in every post. The entries correspond as follows:
User1 vs User2 vs User3
Image1 is User1
Image2 is User2
Image3 is User3
Users listed in White have PUSSED OUT.
On to matches 1-30 of Round 1. Enjoy.

@ Pete:
Julien, I think it's an early bath for me. :(
Well, I'm not sure to understand exactly this expression, but if I catch the general idea, let me tell you: I really dig your picture [Did I read "Tilson's Teenz" ? lol ! You're gold, man ! ;)] and only see the bad points of mine, so I feel the same, really. Be sure that my affection for you still the same, even if you have posted all that Jean-Claude-Van-Damme-dancing samples. :x :er: Nothing but love & respect for my dear Pudding-buddy. :bashful:

Sweeet. Awesome scroll!
I’ll probably look in this and the other threads over and over again.
So many things to write about every piece!
Some artists that put a smile on my face;
MIKECAPS – for making it to the next round like this ; ) nice. Next time stick figures will do just fine.
RobinChyo – for messing up the forums! Knew you would somehow! Sweet
Nicolas – silly americans -_-
M@ - silly french ; )
Creatix – hahaha!
Dutton – made me laugh -_-
Vyle – ouch.
@others - wowsweetyaa
It’ll definitely be interesting following this challenge.
And in case anyone didn't figure it out mine was an attempt in doing something matte-painting-isch... the photos I used can be seen here; scwhing (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/RasselTassel3/Refs.jpg) ..definitely learnt a lot doing it. It was also very Hellgate: London inspired, mood and location-wise(with reasons).

EDIT: my very favourites are the ones by:
Helium Macaroni: Badass would be an understatement!
el coro: Funny, moving, and most definately kick ass.
gorillagrin: Funny as hell! The guy with the crazy eyes is hilarious! I love this, fucking awesome stuff!
johanson: Love the mood, the style, subject matter and the depiction of it!
bugwing: Kick ass man... kick ass.
Dutton: Awesome! And funny as hell as hell!
jmascho: very, very cool
Shliosas: very original take and fucking direct!
Vyle: haha awesome, funny, and amazing execution!
These are my very favourites, however, there is so much awesome stuff in this whole thread that if I wrote everything I liked it would be so damn long!
Excellent stuff all around!
EDIT2: By the way, when did so many of you guys get so fucking good!? :$ Excellence stuff again all

Hey, we had a REALLY tough round here! Why couldn't I have been paired up against someone easier? I'm hoping to make it to round 2 - maybe they'll graduate all three of us and kick a couple out, hehe.
Matt Smith - I love the concept. Hilarious.
Mr. Blonde - And here I thought it was going to be an illustration of you strangling me with my own glove.
We fought HARD. Three spectacular images. I love the colors in you guys' entries. Good luck.

Wow MIKE, Did you send you opponents a link to your pick a day before the deadline or something! Great work, I mean I can see you worked your tale off, and it paid off, no matter the turn out. Great pieces everywhere guys, I just wanted to comment on that match first because of the awe and disappointment that I experienced in that section (MIKE obviously gets the awe...) -
Anyway, back to waiting for this thread to load. It's worth the wait -

Although there was no way in hell i'd compete with that! Woah MIKE!
While shit did indeed go wrong, i like my concept too much to even leave it even after losing it two times, so i'll probably be posting my 3rd attempt during next week in the Finally Finished section, and a little apology image for those who were looking forward to our match.

Aly, brother that is one bad ass piece. I didn't recognize it right off the bat as yours, but it stopped me on my first run through with a Wow! The background is phenomenal, and as always, your "character" is fabulously painted. One of my favorites for the whole competition.

I really would've liked to been able to comment on every piece, but man there's a ton of them, and I don't want to spend my entire day at work typing up comments. But here's some comments on the pieces that stood out for me. I'll get to the other two threads later.
Match 1: bwkeough
Cool character designs and a clear concept.
Match 2: nephilim
Great image with awesome creatures but I don't really understand how it applies to the topic.
So I have to give this match to mwillustration. Really cool concept with an interesting rendering style.
Match 3: POSH!
My man, that rocks so hard. I don't know what I love more about your pictures, the women or all the fantastic little touches you throw in to make their world seem so real.
Match 4: instinct
Looks like it was going to be a cool picture, too bad it's not finished.
Fellah
Nice creature design, but you went with the same concept as a lot of other people.
Match 5: MIKECORRIERO
Wow, really cool! You definitely pushed yourself with this one. A little smudgy in a few areas, but definitely a great piece.
Match 6: miau
Great concept, but it looks unfinished. I hope you keep working on it, because it could be a really nice picture.
robinchyo
Wow, you're the only one to submit like ten pieces at once. Great image, but I think that you could have told the story a bit more concisely. You probably could've gotten away with using half as many panels.
Match 7:nicolas
That's awesome man! Hilarious! Is that arabic for "Beginning of the End"?
Match 8: Hurricane
Alien Pope! Awesome! Love it!
Match 9: prostate sunrise vs Helium Macaroni vs nonie
Wow, all three of these are great!
Prostate
Not sure I understand the connection to the topic, but it's a great design, and very well executed.
Helium Macaroni
Awesome, man. Very clear concept and great environment design.
Nonie
Hahaha, awesome. "Look what I can do!" Love it.
Match 10: Giovanni
Really cool piece. I don't really understand it, but I still love it. The fim elements are really cool.
Match 11: Ilaekae
I don't even know what to say about this one. It creeps the hell out me. Remind me never to knock up a girl without a face.
Match 12: Rassel Tassel
Great piece. I like that you didn't go with an obvious composition focusing too much on the creature.
Match 13: Joiton
Nice piece. It took me a while to figure out exactly what the drawings on the root were supposed to mean, but I did get it eventually. I like it.
Match 14: m@
That's great! I like the Esc key.
Match 15: coro
Dude! That rules! I love it. You took the obvious route and made it totally unique.
Great concept, Infinitum.
Match 16: Summer Pudding
Tilson's Teenz, Ha! That's great! That's an awesome painting, man.
Match 18: Magicgoo
This is traditional, right? Very cool. I love the silhouette hands.
Match 19: gorillagrin
Haha, man that's a great concept. The peace sign target on the tree launcher is a great touch.
Match 22: Robulos and Icon
HOLY CRAP! My two favourite images in this thread, and they're against each other. I hope the one who doesn't win is able to take the place of anyone who pusses out in the next round. Those are seriously fantastic images. I can't say enough about either of them.
Match 23: form vs Sielagaudys vs poise
Three nice images, all pretty evenly matched. This one will be a hard choice for the judges, I think.
Match 24: Pan
Haha, I love this! Mecha-Luchador with tentactles, why didn't I think of that? I like how you snuck the word Welcome into there as well.
Match 25: Dutton
Man, that is an awesome piece! It works so well on screen as well, with people viewing it as they're scrolling down, and then at the very bottom is the punchline. I really love it.
Match 26: Matt Smith
Nice. I like the subtlety of the cheater, I didn't even notice it the first time.
Match27: RobRey
I want a Cerberus! That looks comfy as hell. I love the look on all three of his heads. Great use of colour.
Match 30: Vyle
Dude, that's sweet! And not to imply your opponents didn't put up a good fight, but it pretty much sums up this match.

Wow, great stuff all around!
Iconophobian - nicely done! Great emotion, great brushwork.
I wish I had a better camera for taking the picture of mine, the reproduction is pretty crappy, but really it still needs work anyway.
It all makes me so pumped for round 2! Hopefully I'll do something for it if I'm in or not.

*Snaps fingers*
Will try and offer feedback on each of the individual pieces
Take it only as personal opinions, they may very well be worth nothing :P.
Appologies for maiming the English Language :).
Battle 1
bwkeough :
+ the overall mood and several non human races in your shot.
-: Lighting could have been a bit more vivid. Don't really like when "Welcome to the begining of the end" is limited to "Welcome to the begining of that fellow's end"
aesir:
+ :Bold lighting, . Colors are nice.
- : for a piece where hands are a focus, they are not very tightly drawn...Also the little girl holding the key does not quite say to me "Welcome to the begining of the end"
Battle2
nephilim:
+several graphic shapes read well in your work. Faces of the serpents are also very nice.
-: the face and anatomy on the woman, and the fact that colors lack subtlety.
interceptor
+ the colors, and composition.
-: I am looking as an earthworm and a fish and expecting to read "Welcome to the begining of the end" It may be the doom of the fish, but why should that interest the onlooker ?
mwillustration :
+ nicely done figures, nice composition/shapes, does tackle the subject.
-: a bit too mundane ( again personal opinion) and the brushes on the close character contrast unpleasantly with the way the other characters are rendered.
Battle 3:
Burtzum
+:you chose to tackle this through a bal scene.
-: the 'unsecure' rendering and shaky perspective/proportions.
poshspice
+Profesionally illustrated, nice colors, nice atmosphere, nice storytelling.
- not many minuses here, only a personal debatable one.... the begining of the end should encompas more then one character. Otherwise the onlooker does not quite see it at "the end" but "that character's end". But again, that's a personal preference.
cdeternity: The rendering is a bit rough to be able to se things clearly.
+I like the yellow accent on the blue page
-It is just a monster vs soldier sketch with no details to grab the onlooker.
Battle4:
instinct
+the big bots ( in control yet showing a measure of respect) and actually yes the fall or capture of royalty hints very well towards the beginning of the end.
-I do not like the unfinishedness and the fact that the princess' head looks a bit masculine.
Fellah.
+I like lots of it, the colors, and the fact that it is on the subject etc.
-the stiffyness in the lower part of the picture.
Match 5:
MIKECORRIERO:
+ Tehnique, subject, colors all lovely
- The level of detail seems to be a bit too evenly distributed across the surface of the work (clouds on top are the sole place where the painting can "breathe" a bit")..
Match6
n0fish:
+the feeling that there's definitelly something spooky going on.
-the unfunishdness in the rendering, funky anatomy and composition. Also for the average onlooker the subject is only hit tangentially.
miau:
+ Right on the money with the subject, natural looking figures and nice composition.
- Too scketchy.
robinchyo:
+ Nice color associations and bold approach
-a single more polished illustration would have been better rather then more but very very rough.
Match7:
Slash
+ On the subject
- Proportions/Anatomy, values and composition could be improved. Right now the focal point seems to be the old man's white hair.
nicolas
+ this is professional work :)
- not much :P A tighter rendering would have been nice :)
Lewis
+ Good ideea
- Composition color and anatomy do not do justice to the ideea.
Match8:
Hurricane
+ Nice storytelling solid rendering
- Too much of the same yellow..( for instance the man's hair has the same yellow as the cape) it kinda gets to the onlooker after a while.
noiion
+ the tree-graphic shapes in the background..
- The picture on the whole does not stand together, it looks like a collection of details.
Azza
+ the lower right part, and the overall colors
- The unsecure brush strokes and the rendering of the ghosts ( and anatomy). Smoke and sky are also not properly taken care of.
Match 9
prostate sunrise
+ Lots of it. Loving what you have done.
- Nothing worth mentioning :) I'm sure you know the weak points :P
Helium Macaroni
+ Another very very nice one.
- Can't really find something to fault you for :P.
nonie
+ Fresh approach :)
- there is some photo feel to the close characters that does not go quite well with what is in front of them.
match 10
Giovanni
+Nice colors and I like the film ideea. Ties well with the beginning of the end :).
- Drapery and anatomy.
al-x
+ Bold approach. Not unexpected, but bold.
- Perspective, values and composition
Match11:
Bowlin:
+the pixie
- Colors and composition.
Ilaekae
+ Fresh change of style
- the style prevents me from tryin to fault you :P Personally I find going for such a style to be a big gamble. Many might not enjoy it.
pickleyum - Don't really understand much of what is going on there :).
Match12:
john
+ I find the full of potential
- Too sketchy
RasselTassel
+ Nice rendering nice mood, lots of niceness :).
- can't fault you :P Well maybe a bit on the right upper part behind the center borken column photo texture is a bit too visible. If that is photo-texture at all.
Boogieman
+ You capture the attention of the onlooker with the white sheet and lead it up on the lady and then on to the man quite nicely
- the rest of the composition bugs me, both shape-wise and color wise . Anatomy could be better.
Match13
Joiton
+ Nice colors, nice critters, solid lines
- Not quite getting the beginning of the end.
minda
+ Nice graphic lines and shapes.
- Too scetchy. Not quite getting the beginning of the end either.
maxetorm
+ Nice ideea. Lovely ornaments.
- A bit too dark . It fragments the composition.
Match 14:
emily g
+ Cute portrait
- fires in the beckground not giving that welcome to the beginning of the end feeling.
Art_Addict
+ Spooky mood
- The man's expression sort of ruins things .. for me.
m@
+ Nice style, nice joke, lovely colors and composition.
- Meh you don't need me to tell you anything bad :P.
Match 15
MATYAS
+ Made them green and red colors work together quite nicely. Nice graphic shapes.
- can't really relate to the picture, too much black
Infinitum
+ solid color scheme
- anatomy
el coro
+ Unexpected color scheme, quite nice :)
- does the boom HAVE to be there ?:)
Match16
Destinatus
+ Something nice going on with the square-ish smoke, graphic wise
- anatomy and value placement
Summer Pudding
+ Nice colors, nice cityscape
- A tad too blurry for comfort. the begining of the end seems not very... present.
Alday.J
+ Shapes composition and color
- Nothing worth mentioning really
MAtch 17
Creatix
+ Good start with the use of textures and unusual ideea.
- There's not much else interesting aside the textures
Gloominati
+ use of texture brushes
- anatomy color composition perspective
Match 18
MichalB
+ Storytelling
- Rendering tehnique, colors, perspective
magicgoo
+ it grabs the onlooker.
- Anatomy and lighting.
MAtch19
JaïnvanNigtevegt
+ Good ideea Nice rendering especially on the blood and coffins
-a bit too gross for comfort. The 'clouds' are done too hastely.
Oddo
Well I will offer a bit of insight on what was going on through my head :)
I figured that a true Welcome to the begining of the end should happen in a safe place from the said end (nuclear bunker or submarine of sorts).
Also the nuclear begining of the end could also be doubled by the begining of an ordeal for a character (the woman is going to get tortured for the nuclear launch codes by some freaky, pretty faced, slightly hunched fellow with mental issues, hence the odd henchwomen with gasmasks).
Also with four women it would have been a nice opportunity for some fashion design... but in the end I did not find the time to do that.
The minuses: Sloppy rendering, sloppy anatomy, no fashion design, too little time spent on the piece, probably too esoteric. The faces are only half expressive, and skin texture could have been tons better (too few color
hues and accents) ( along with most the surfaces). Too many bugs to mention.
Time is not an excuse, one should make time for Thunderdome (even during cruchtime at work).
gorillagrin
+ Ideea and humour
- Anatomy and perspective.
I see it more as "the end of the beginning" as the beginning of the end :). But that is only a matter of personal perspective.
I am afraid I'm going to lose the post so posting this now, and a bit later the other 10 matches. :)

Match 20
Infinit
+ Nice shapes and lines on the tree in the back.
-Figure could use some tightening.
Zaknafain
+ Nicely lit
- Too basic.
Rash Overdrive
+ Nice ideea.
- A tighter rendering might have been nicer.
Match21
Jaku
+ I can feel the story. Colors somehow work even if they are strong ( with a few exceptions)
- perspective anatomy and lighting.
Match22
rsnurkle Too undefined to tell
Robolous
+ value characters and composition
- I'm sure you know :)
Iconophobian
+ My vafourite piece of this thread
- Not feeling the need to mention anything :)
Match 23
Form
+ Nicely executed
- Composition is a bit fractured.. or not but somehow it does not catch my interest
Sielagaudys
+ Knight in the back very expressive
- Too unfinished
Poise
+Great idea, rock solid executed.
-The lower right part, with the bugman and leaf does not seem to be quite from the same illustration, it is rendered a tad too differently. Too hard contours perhaps... ?
Match24
Noë
+ good ideea
- Anatomy composition and perspective
johanson
+ Ideea and nicely painted
- colors seem a bit muddy in places.. more work on the faces was needed
pan
+ courageous piece. Nice going with the stylised sun rays.
- tries to mix elements that don't quite go together. Probably the difference is part of the catch, but its magic does not work on me.
Match25
bRØk3n_sPiRiT
+ Lovely mood, great for kid's illustration
- Does not quite hit the topic.
bugwing
+ Color scheme works well
-The interesting elements do not seem to work together, coudn't say why though :/. Maybe because the dominant shape is a too common one and towers (in terms of onlooker attention) over the other, more interesting shapes ?
Dutton
+ Lovely painted
- A bit too grim for comfort.
Match 26
Matt Smith
+Nice skintones, especially on the hands
- Men playing poker.. dont find it quite catchy
panda
+ Nice colors and composition
- Could do with some tightening :)
Mr.Blonde
+ Nice colors and composition ( again :) )
- Just a tiny bit too abstrat for my taste
Match27
Ben Mauro
+ Nice blast
- Ships should have used a little more design
Queensoul
+ nice use of complementary color.
- perspective and anatomy
Match 28
Faust
+ nice colors
- little to no real detail
RobRey
+ nice colors, composition, drapery. many good things :)
- Flames seem to be only lighting what they chose to light
jmascho
+ Eloquently put . Likthe birds transforming from the cloth stripes.
- More detail, right now is a bit generic and the main figure is a bit too 'cloacked figure with clasped hands' common :).
Match 29
haldor
+ Nice textures you have obtained there
- Composition and detail.
whoami
+ Very nice work.
- Coudn't find stuff not to like :)
sundance
+ Card illustration nice ideea :)
- Perspective. Color. Anatomy.
Match 30
Shliosas
Too disturbing to talk about.
Vyle
+Nice values, nice colors, nice shapes.
- a bit too focused on being a muscle flexing shot ;P.
ARACUBUS
+ bold approach. Lots of fgures :)
- rendering and anatomy need a bit of tightening.
Initially intended to do this for all three threads.. but might not have the time, it took me three hours on this one alone, and I got work tomorrow ..:D

July 14th, 2006, 07:41 PM
aesir - thanks buddy, it would be waay creepy if you had used the guy in white, as it is, we had similar color palettes and scenes. :)
oddo - actually that guy is going to be operated on by the technomancers, transforming him into a cybernetic thrall for the fallen angel and demon. it's the end of his life as he knows it, but the beginning of something else.
I'll have to get back to everyone else with comments later this weekend. Lots of great work all around and I still haven't looked at the other threads!

July 14th, 2006, 07:45 PM
Pickelyum - I like the different types of textures in that pic. You ought to post more around here, perhaps a sketchbook? :)
Ilaekae - First I have to say that I do really appreciate you helping me out trying to understand the resolution and canvas size questions. Being competitors and being able to help me out is what I believe all artist should try to strive to do. You really are a true gentleman in helping people out. .... Now your pic? That's creepy as hell, man. heh. Makes me glad I'm not married. And you used the crayons in that? LOL... cool.
Rassal Tassal, Helium Macaroni - Beautiful pictures.
MIKEALLCAPS - I love that gesture idea for "welcome". One of those times that make me think, "why didn't I think of that?". Plus it was fun to trash talk once again.. hehehe. Just hope nobody ever takes us seriously. Nice pic, though I know it sucks winning by default.
Iconophobian - I absolutely LOVE this pic! In the back of my mind I'm always worried that the gentle giants will become extinct. I like your color scheme for it too.
whoami - I thought your pic really worked well with the theme. Nice idea and I like the shiney metal texture at the bottom of the pic.

0kelvin and Oddo,
thanks for the comments.
:)
0kelvin, in nephilim's defense i think his piece totally goes with the theme, since it refers to a passage in the book of Revelation about the end times.
but thanks for the props!
hopefully i'm not just taking the match in your opinion by default. :)
Oddo, you're totally right about the rendering of the figure in the foreground.
i actually still need to finish rendering ALL of the figures, since i didn't get a chance to totally complete my image.
my wife just had our second child by way of c-section on July 5, so needless to say, that took up alot of my time.
that's still no excuse though for not getting it done, since we had plenty of time. :(
but i definitely didn't wanna puss out!
;)
for any that care, here's the Bible verse that i based my image on.
(referring to the end times)
Matthew 24:23-24:
At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible.

Ah, okay. I'm not real familiar with the specifics of the book of Revelation. But even if his picture does reference the book of Revelation, it still doesn't illustrate it. It's just a character design (a very good one, no doubt), and doesn't tell a story.
hopefully i'm not just taking the match in your opinion by default. :)
No, not at all, I really like your piece and I think it portrays the theme perfectly.
Congrats on the baby!

Wow! Alot of really fine artwork here. Tremendous effort CA'ers. Of course I have to pick my favorites :P . Although I'm amazed at some of the progress some people have shown in their work.
Nephilim-I'm a sucker for the color in this one. Retina explosion!
PoshSpice-Nice twist on the concept! Really appropriate palette and design for the era. The light on the leg is really nice too!
Fellah-I really like the sky and lighting in this one.
Mike C-Wow. Nice graphical elements at the focal points of your composition. Are you sure you started this a week ago? :P
Prostate Sunrise-This one has been overlooked by alot of people. I'm a huge fan of this one. Concept is alittle ambiguous, but then again...I am a rather slow person.
Helium Macaroni-My favorite in this section. Wow, came out swingin'. Lightyears better than your ACCD/CCAD piece. How the fuck did you get the detail in that newspaper!?
RasselTassel-Holy crap. Beautiful monochromatic color scheme. Beautifully detailed, and yet Not overworked.
Matyas-Oh boy! beautiful work my friend. Get that lighter version up, or at least post a detail in your sketchbook. People need to see those subtlties better. Great color, I'm loving those hands and bubbles! Good luck against Coro bro'!
Coro-El Coro is like El Nino! This is a really nice piece. Minimal detail and maximum impact.
Alday J.-Nice piece from the Frenchman!
Iconophobian-WTF. I'm hatin' McDonald's, but I'm loving this piece. Nice surrealistic influence.
Vile-Hahaha! Sweet

mikeallcapsthatitypedinalllowercase - very grim piece. Echo the overall sympathies on your default win. But you went all out so hopefully the result is a victory in itself. Nicolas - Cracked me up. Who the hell wears a wife beater with the American flag on it? haha, Classic!! Hurricane - Very strong. m@ - I love love love this one! Rash Overdrive - there's a contemporary feel to this piece that I really enjoy. I like the somber mood as well. Sielagaudys - Man oh man, how have I not seen your work before? poise - Tiffany, I really like the mood, palette and composition, but forgive me for not knowing exactly what is taking place. Iconophobian - If there's a way I can get that piece to hang in my studio, let me know. Alday J. - The intricacy of the clockwork is amazing! Cheers Julien! Vyle - V for Vendetta, Vicious, Victorious, Vyle ....
What an honor to be submitting art in such fine company! (Including all the ones I didn't get to name).

So much great art work in here. I love them all. I feel blessed that I was able to participate.
I don't feel like I deserve to move on to round 2 though by a default. I feel like I should have to jump through some flaming hoops and hop across the pit of doom just to earn the right of passage :P :dad:
Why? There was a war. Not only did you show up but you made some fabulous art. I'd give you extra medals even for that. Don't feel bad at all.

i agree with Mike.
not because he dont desrve it. he did a spectacular piece.
but so many matchs looks a prety unfair to me. in the way that dont pass the best artist. pass the man who get lucky in the match
"pussed out" ok i pass!! yeah.
bettet if the method was pick up just the best 90 from all the work, free for all!!
and then. in the round two, yes to man vs man vs man type of match.
but if any artist pass for pussed out competitors.. do something for fix that.
in the cow chow. etc. the poll works fine.
change the method!!!!
i didnt say this because me. of course. well. you know....
i hope you people understand my bad english.

The only problem with this is those were not the rules. Wehn everyone agreed to do this they did it based on the rules that were setup. This is how every single elimination tournament is run, if you happen to get metched up with someone good enough to be in the last round in your first round and you get knocked out, that's how it is. Ultimately you wouldn't have won anyway.
I would actually like it to be the way you mention, because I think my odds of winning would improve as I was matched up with two badass pieces. But you can't change the rules to make it easier for a specific few to get to the next round, that truly is unfair.
i agree with Mike.

Or maybe people should just stay commited and get their piece in. We all volunteered to do this, and we're given a month (+). If you can't get a piece in just tell Cody so he can grab someone from the reserves, that way we compete. And the choices of match up are random guys. If you get matched up with a "Marko," just step your game up. That's what happened last year -
When someone backed out last year, I don't believe it was a prob. I had to back out, and even though I was really late on letting him know, Cody was able to get a resrve and everything was cool. Anyways, don't get worked up, we've been here before -

Hey yeah, that's a great idea! All we have to do is give the judges the task of picking their favorite 90 pieces of art out of nearly 250 that were submitted! Why didn't I think of that.
Oh yeah, I didn't because it's an impossible goddamn task to ask a single person to take on.
The dome isn't designed to necessarily facilitate that the absolute best pieces advance to the next round. It's about the chaos of not knowing who the hell you're going up against until it's announced, giant-killers who come out from nowhere and kick some ass, and most of all it's about art for the hell of it without any whining about how it could have been done better.
There are hundreds of kickass pieces submitted, and lots of kickass pieces will not see it through to the end. Tough shit. You're having fun, aren't you? Are you suddenly going to discount how the dome is run if you don't advance?
Logistically, this is one of the best ways I could think of to create a massive tournament that embraces the fun of the luck of the random draw and skill. I made it known from day one how shit was run here, and if you aren't comfortable with it or can think of a better way to realistically run a 270 man thunderdome, you're more than welcome to start an activity specifically suited to your tastes.

And for fuck's sake, a tournament structure in ANY competition isn't designed to pass only the best from the massive pool of competitors round to round! If two great teams are matched up in the first round of a playoff series and one of them loses, do you ever expect the losing team to bitch about how the playoffs were run and get a pass into the next round? They should have played better if they wanted to win, plain and goddamn simple.
Boohoohoo, I hate whiners.

:)
I'm not angry or anything, I just know that you aren't familiar with the logistics of running something like this. All I'm telling you is picking the 90 best entries is not feasible to judge and defeats the purpose of this dome.
Of course I don't want people to just pass without battling anyone, and I think I did a good job of keeping up with the reserve list and filling in any replacements that I could. Keeping tabs on everyone's matches and updating all of the threads and lists and websites with everyone's new matchups drains a lot of time, something I don't have a lot of to freely throw around. I don't think you are taking that into consideration. On top of that, I'm not going to take a participant from a full 3 man match to fill in a slot where only 1 person showed up. That would be deceptive to all the particpants affected.
And as for your Italy and Germany analogy... I don't think Germany would have pussed out without a warning. And I'm fairly sure a reservist list wouldn't be active the day of the tournament if a team just decided to not show up. ;)
I'm not telling you you can't have an opinion, but I am telling you that your opinion was short-sighted and utopian. If everything went perfectly, 271 people would have shown up and submitted pieces for their matches. I have to depend on 270 other people for everything to run smoothlly, but since that is obviously not possible I have to do the best I can with what I have.

strych9ine, you are awesome, really, you are one with energy and charm of the hundred. Bless your smart head and gold hands. And I would like to comment on your entry, but I will do it in your book, it was a great piece.
And I apreciate and it is funny too, that you only need to count at 270 people, you know that 271 th guy will be realiable, that's sweet. My kind of guy.
See you soon in your book.

All I'm telling you is picking the 90 best entries is not feasible to judge and defeats the purpose of this dome.
feasible...maybe.
defeats the purpose... DEFINITELY.
its a thunderdome, its all about the face to face competition.
when you get to the later rounds, you'll be trying not just to produce a good piece,
but you'll be trying to produce a piece that specifically exploits your challenger's weaknesses.
not to mention, a "free for all" would mean twice as many drop outs.
people would feel less noticed.
all that aside,
i agree about match 22... iconophobia & robolous.
by far the most crushing decision to make.

Dan, no kidding about that match. That's the beauty and the pain of the dome. Everyone should also keep in mind that if people drop from the second round, there is a public vote about which people deserve to advance based upon their performance in the previous rounds. Whether you exit the dome at the beginning or the end, what you've contributed is not forgotten.
That sounds epic. We got a tagline!
