Hey all,
It's been a while since i've been on the forums - which I feel really bad about. There is so much amazing work here, as usual. wow. anyway, i just passed (yay!) my wizards of the coast art test. Here are the three images i painted for it - they were very specific in their direction so i was not given an open ended assignment. Also, I was contacted by the sequential chair at SCAD to do some card art-- i have attached them as well. The card art is a set to go into a larger game -- and my timeline was much shorter. Enjoy!

Nice images. How do you go about getting an art test for WOTC. I've been trying to get some stuff to them for awhile, but all I've ever found is the form you fill out on their website.

I would like to know also, I sent them a portfolio once a few years ago, one of the art directors sent me a letter telling me they may contact me in the future, however...................nadda. LOL
Your stuf is very nice! I really like the greedo guys in the laser fight.

Thanks for the nice words, guys! I don't know the specifics on how the process works - but I sent them my portfolio in an email with a short cover letter stating my intent. About a week later I got a reply that said my work had been selected by one of the art directors... etc,. then they began the 6 week art test. it was pretty stressful - so I am now quite relieved to have passed.
jfwalls: look for "submissions" on the wizard's page - there is a page describing what they're looking for, and i think the email address was somehting like artdrop@wizards.com (don't quote me on that). good luck!

Thanks Vantrum. I did find the submissions link. I had always looked at the jobs listing, and so missed the little submissions link. The art test was 6 weeks?? Did you get paid for any of it?

I have always been fascinated by wizards of the coasts artists, I had no idea you could actually just apply to them. If I could paint, I'd give it a try, but I'm limited to a world of black and white for the moment.
Congrats (I love magic cards, be looking for your works in the series ;) providing you might appear there.)

jfwalls: yeah, it was 6 weeks - three for sketching/sketch aproval - three for final paint. As far as pay -- nope. I get three portfolio pieces which are not copywritten - and they figure out if I am a pain to work with. it works out well for everyone :)
gingo/serena - thanks... i too hope to make magic cards -- but wizard's does a variety of publishing - so who knows!

ah a fellow SCAD student!
I'm really likin the cards, especially the third one in the cockpit, wonderful color.
The second star wars card is also quite good, love the dynamic feel to it, but the left characters left foot/leg feels a bit stiff and awkward. The character on the right has much more natural feel to it's pose.

Amish: yeah, John Lowe is still the chair. I haven't had him as a professor yet, but he seems to be a pretty awesome guy. What is going on in San Diego?

Nice work Vantrum, and thanks for the info concerning WOTC. Many have aspirations of doing some work for them and it's nice to get some of the inside scoop concerning their trial process.
How involved did the art director get? Or were you dealing directly with a lead artist? Can you give any specifics specifically having to do with the pieces you posted?

Great illustrations, especially the one with dragons.
That's a big thing working with WOTC. I've send them 2 times portfolio, but without answer. I'll try show them my works next week in San Diego...
