Yep, latin jazz to be exact.
I was at London's Jazz Cafe (http://www.meanfiddler.com/displayPage.asp?ArticleID=3147&URLID=19) tonight, to see Eddie Palmieri!! (Y su orquesta) One of my favourate latin jazz musicians ever!
I had just seen a poster in the underground a few days ago, I didn't even know London had a jazz cafe! As soon as I checked the web and saw Eddie Palmieri was playing, I booked my ticket right away!
Anyway, just wanted to post here. I had a fucking blast. It was so awesome. Jazz live is just so damn awesome! Now that i've had my first taste, I need more!!
Also playing was Bryn Linch on trumpet and John Benitez on electric bass. You can see the full list on the link I provided. I've never heard of Craig Handy, but he was a super awesome sax player!

Anyway, I'm super pumped, I have a huge headache from all the loud music and smoke, but I'm so happy! : ]

So, anyone have some cool first time experiences with live jazz?
Would love to hear them.

Oh and anyone in London into Jazz (and other kinds of music) I urge you to check the stuff playing through out the rest of the year.
Oh and anyone into hip hop, Naughty By Nature and De La Soul are gonna be there at some point too, check it out!

Peace.

There's a yearly jazz festival over here that is on for three nights, lots of bands, lots of styles. You can hear interpretations of Django Reinhart and Jelly Roy Morton to swing and bossa nova on the same night.

Usually the bands will most likely be from here, but there are lots of bands from other contries every year. There've been some great bands from France, USA, Spain, and Costa Rica.

Sounds like you had a good time : )

EDIT: The band that I really wanted to see but missed, was Emir Kusturica's band when he came here. I have the album, but I would have loved to see the band live.

Huh? you've never heard live jazz before? That's crazy!

A cool experience I had was listening to live jazz at Columbia University when I was in New York City. It was outside, summertime, a Sunday afternoon, I sat in the grass -- and I found a dollar. :)

Speaking of Django Reinhart - Saw the Birelli Lagrene quartet (known for his Reinhart interpretations) couple of years ago at UCLA...(although I wouldve prefered to be in a small smoky club)

Blew the roof off the place...

I am firmly of the belief, that live jazz creates thes best facial expressions on the musicians out of any musical category. Its amazingly fun to watch. :)

hahaha. welcome to the dark side, cai. my dad's a jazz reviewer and thus i was raised on a healthy diet of jazz, since i was a young 'un.

jazz cafe is definately one of the best places in london for jazz. soho's got a great few places too but some of them can be a bit pricey. check out 'tomorrow's warriors', a jazz collective.. i think they place in the spice of life pub in soho. they're amazinggg

i just came back from a jazz festival in finland today. it was awesome, and i got to meet some famous musicians.

maybe we can go somewhere for an impromptu london meet sometime, haha
