Hello everyone, this is my first ever post on conceptart.org. I have been watching the forums for a little while now, and have decided it's about time I posted my own art and joined the community.

First, a little information about myself: My nameis Jonathan Dare. I am 14 years old and live in southern california. I have been drawing for as long as I can remember (mostly just anime or stick figures fighting and that kind of stuff), and I have always had a passion for creating things. Recently( about a year ago), I got into computer graphics and things and have done very little pen and paper art since. In my spare time I create websites and wallpapers and stuff (most not worth mentioning or showing to anyone). Recently, since I discovered conceptart.org, I have been inspired to start my own sketchbook and do my best to become a better artist in all areas not just computer art. However, my supplies are somewhat limited. Paints, expensive pencils, or even watercolors are somewhat difficult for me to come by, so most of my art is done with a simple #2 pencil and paper. I know I'm not very good yet, but everyone has to start somewhere, right?

That being said, the first images of my sketchbook. The sizes have been scaled down because I thought that the full images were a bit too large (up to 1664x1168 ):

Some flowers that I drew last night completely off the top of my head (I just felt like drawing flowers). I did not have any flowers to look at at the time and I ended up just doing a lot of random geometric designs on the vase. I know its dark, a bit crowded, and hard to make out, but nonetheless I like it:

This one is a robot thing that I drew a little while ago as part of a game concept that I was pitching. The project was abandoned after a very similar mod was released and the game would have no longer been as original as when I had started it. Anyway, here is the picture:

If the images don't work, please check back frequently as I am waiting for the subdomain to fully propogate, and until then they may not function properly.

Also, in a somewhat different subject, I was wondering if the Wacom Intous pad would be worth spending $200+ on. I was wondering if it pays for itself with the time it saves or if it would just be better to scan things in. I was also wondering if size mattered when getting a pad, because as far as I can see the smaller one would be just as effective as the larger ones, just with a smaller canvas, but since it is on the computer I figured you could always just make it bigger or add more to it easily.

I will be setting up an online journal or a blog soon for my art and things, so I'll try and keep you all updated with progress on that and of course my art.

Any replies, good or bad, will be much appreciated.

You have a wonderful work ethic and all i can say is start drawing from life, carry a sketchbook around and draw constantly. There really isn't a trick to this stuff. It just takes determination, practice, and hard work. (If you love to draw this shouldn't be a problem.) Set up still lifes, draw your hands, feet, do self portraits in the mirror, draw the family dog, and if you can get your friends to stay still draw them too. I am not too well aquainted with electronic drawing pad voodoo :P , but I might suggest that you just go out and buy a pad of paper, some nice drawing pencils and and just start drawing. The stuff I'm seeing from you shows a good amount of effort. Keep it up man, good luck!

Well, same day, but I figured since the last picture I should post another picture for today, so here it is:

This picture was drawn from reference of a rose in my backyard. The title of the picture is somewhat ironic as it is in pencil and has no color whatsoever. I did my best to smooth our the rough shading that I did, but I couldn’t get it perfect with the pencil that I was using. I will try to get a good set of Graphic Drawing Pencils, but until then this one will do.

I would like to go back and add color to it sometime, so expect to see this again in the future. This is the full size image, so I’m sorry to those people with lower resolutions.

Also, I've got my online art journal (blog) up at http://blog.xerobound.com/. Everything you see here will be posted on there (and vice versa), but if you want to just look at the art and not all of the comments in between, head over there.

I thank Screen_Addict88 for your reply and I will take your advice. I am somewhat disappointed that nobody else wanted to reply to my thread, but seeing as it's not amazing artwork, I can't really complain. That's all for tonight, might post some more tomorrow... Maybe something other then flowers?

These were all actually done last night and I just put the finishing touches on them this morning.

The first set of sketches are of animals:

Snake:
Some sort of snake, can't tell exactly the kind it is, but it looks good. I was a bit lazy on the scales, but it turned out alright:
http://blog.xerobound.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/07/snake.jpg

Panda:
A cut panda I drew after seeing someone elses drawing of a Panda and being iinspired to draw my own:
http://blog.xerobound.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/07/panda.jpg

Shark:
A Great White Shark I drew after watching a thing about sharks on YouTube. It's a bit small for a Great White, but I don't think that matters:
http://blog.xerobound.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/07/shark.jpg

Kitten:
A tribute to my late cat Pancakes, the last of our four cats. It is a really sad story what happened to them all, and if you want to know, PM me and I'll tell you. Anyway, drawn after an Orange Tabby kitten (I think that's what they are called).

The last picture from last night’s sketches is a quick little robot I drew while watching some late-night TV:

That's all for now, please leave comments, I don't care what kind. Even if they are "You Suck" posts, I would be happy to read them :) .

Yet another picture for today. Inspired by the dragon thread that was somewhere on this site. Here is my own dragon (click the thumnail to view the full size image):

I'm going to take a break for now, so this may or may not be the last update for the day.

And if anyone can give me an answer to my questions about the wacom, that would be great, here they are again for you lazy people:

I was wondering if the Wacom Intous pad would be worth spending $200+ on. I was wondering if it pays for itself with the time it saves or if it would just be better to scan things in. I was also wondering if size mattered when getting a pad, because as far as I can see the smaller one would be just as effective as the larger ones, just with a smaller canvas, but since it is on the computer I figured you could always just make it bigger or add more to it easily.

great start! your drawings from life are best, and if you want to improve rapidly that's where you need to look; small sketchbooks in your pocket everywhere are key!

Alright, I know its been a few days since my last update (though I don't think anyone noticed or cared), but I thought I would post some of the things that I have done.

I haven't really gotten around to any actual drawings other then some doodles that aren't really worth scanning, but I did do another painting on the computer since my last one seemed to be the favorite of everyone I showed it to. So here that is:

http://xerobound.com/gallery/images/digital/waterlandscape.jpg

EDIT :: For anyone who would care to know, this and the other painting above were both entirely done on the computer. The "canvas" texture on the water one is just a texture effect that I applied to give it an authentic look.

Also I have taken a few hours this morning to create my official website, located at http://www.xerobound.com/. Please tell me what you think of it and anything I could do to improve it.

I will doing a lot of art over the next few weeks as to fill up the website so I can actually get people to WANT my services.

Anyway, any comments are appreciated, even negative ones.

Thats all for now.

Digis are looking great, you seem to have an affinity for a tonal approach.

Like these dudes said - sketchbook is invaluable.
It's good to see the diversity of subject matter in these drawings. Some things you 'll need to do is to get fully clued up with your anatomy. Lotsa books and online resources to do that. Also, work with a sharp pencil - always. A mechanical or clutch pencil usually don't give good line quality, there are only a few dudes round here who really know how to work those.

hope you find that helpful,
ciao

Thanks for the reply...

Heres another digital, not nerely as good as the other two because 1) I didn't spend nearly enough time on it, 2) I tried to it all with an airbrush, and 3) I didn't pay as much attention to detail and used a large brush size because I just wanted to get it done so I could play with some effects on it (which also lowered the quality a bit, but it was bad to start, so hey).
