Hi, thanks for your comments. It keeps my motivation up high.
I know i realy need to draw better proportions. Never did a study of proportions. And its now paying the toll. --> like learning it anyway. :). But thats okay.
Got hollyday's now. Enough spare time.

But some uploads now.

Two sketches from life. --> my face. At one i look like a alian. And realy iam not a alian. (i hope :P)

And a crazy creature. And some proportion study. Please keep leaving messages. To help and inspire me. (This is the 600x800? --> corel painter)

watch the lenght of the nose when you're drawing, you are enlongating it a lot. Just general proportions, eyes too big, mouth not wide enough. Hand studies are nice! Keep it up

muchothanx for the comments in me book.

self portraits are looking good - need to work sharper though. Mass conception is very important in order to give the face weight and dimension. Often it is useful to start in terms of cubes, and not merely mapping out the edges.

Also don't trust your mind. It's lying to you, trust your eyes. Don't think about what you see, just look and then redraw. Only after you have drawn must you think, in order to learn.

good portraits, keep grinding the lead man

July 19th, 2006, 11:23 AM
some pretty nice stuff in here, the SPs are gettin better but there is one mistake you seem to do almost every time: too much face, lol:
watch the proportions really well, look closesly at your reference and mark where the nose, lips, eyes are supposed to be. This is the most important step because if the proportions are screwed, nothing can make the portrait look good anymore.
I think that this is the first step that you have to manage, after that there is much more to come, so don't worry that you might get bored with selfportraits someday, there is a ton to learn out of them!

Keep at it!

nice studies, and those face studies in the mirror are gettin good too. Still my favorite way to practice facial anatomy (still pretty noobish at it myself). I suggest trying to draw longer lines and varying the weight, instead of having lots of short lines.

I think that water color arm is the best and my favourite.

For your faces, I reckon you ought to be more consistent with your proportions at the moment. In particular, I feel the eyes tend to be a bit high up the face and often too close together (ideally, the iris align at the middle of the face, the distance between the eyes should be one eye long). Also, as was mentioned, the nose can be shorter, and the mouth (when relaxed) is usually as wide as the two irises.

I'd also like to point out that I think you're doing a good job with the hatching/shading of the face.

Returning the favour you left in my sb.

Looking good oma, seeing real improvement nya. When doing sculptures it's useful to think more about your dark and light than usually. Determine which side will be darker and remember nothing on the dark side is ever as light as on the light side, and nothing on the light side is ever as dark as something on the dark side.

Good job though - great textures yo're created. Keep it up!

Here is a new SP. I think my nose still is a little to long. but, i think my lips and eye's are pretty good, maybe a little flat, but that something to work on. maybe my head is a little to wide. but. will keep that in mind for the next time. hope you will enjoy this one.

I see alot of improvement in your work. The only thing that stands out that I would say to work on is the eyeballs. Don't make them so much a circle...remember...most people, their top eyelid covers the very top of the eyeball making it more of a 3/4 of a circle.
Don't take this as I am talking down to you....I hate jerks that do that to me because they think they are gods gift to art. The way I see it...if the artist is happy with his work and the style of the work, then thats the way it should be.

it realy keeps my motivation up. I googled some face proportions. and worked on the eyeballs. But iam still not happy with my work. i can be better. much better. but just need a lot of practise and hopefully i will be happy with my work in the future.

So here's a new SP.

If i look to it, the lips are a little bit to high, my face is to small, it has to be a little bit higher. and the shading can be better. but. thats for the next try. :P

Nice work, I think you're showing some real improvement on your self portraits. My advice would be to try keeping your proportions more consistent, doing some studies on the measurements of the face would probably be helpful. The expressions and lighting are looking really good though, keep posting.

I think that you should start paying more atention to hair in your portraits, they would gain a lot from this.

take a pencil, look in the mirror and do some basic proportions already
make a simple grid with delimitations, just as you would do on a game in which you have to unite a bunch of points with lines to obtain an image in the end, do that based on the measurements you did with your pencil, holding your hand straight forward, unbent
seriously, i see potential but there's a lot of fluctuations and no proprtion is the same iin any drawing compared to another...and i dont think your head has proportion changes now does it:P
its gonna be a lot easier afterwards...you're thinking its easier this way just because u got used to it but the thing is its actually harder than doing it correctly:P

as for the shading, get some casts of the human face, preferably plaster casts because its the hardest medium that shows the reflections of the light and shadows the best way
observe hard and do a lot of studies with every shadow u see, no matter what size...be sure to respect the tonal values and start doing a base colour, a soft grey and based on that grey do the rest of the shades
and be sure to observe how the light reflects on the shaded areas too

Cigaro -> i know. but it's hard to change a habbit. but i gonna try. And iam still looking for a skull. maybe i gonna go to a art museum and draw some of the greek statue's. that totally rocks.

d- -> uhu. mentler advice was realy usefull. thanxz for the kind words.

thanxz for the c&c. hope you will see some progress.

Cigaro
July 25th, 2006, 06:12 PM
try to change it(the habbit)...you'll be a lot more precise
i dont recommend studying statues at a museum, as you need a lot of time to observe the whole shadow range and i guarantee you wont see evcery subtle thing
i suggest asking your drawing teacher to borrow u a cast ( he must have one) and you'll be able to do your studies at home, more comfortably and with a more reliable light source(which you can chose as u wish;))

as for your latest, again, some issues with proportions(the nose for example)
your lines seem more broken rather than flowing, and some parts suffer from that(ex. the eyes)
one of the basic anatomy principles is to think in curves;)..so use more curved, relaxed lines
shading: imo you only did the first step...you need more guts...come on, shade the whole face with a soft grey and then, compared to it, do the rest of the shading..even the subtle stuff...if u use that grey base, you'll avoid unwanted contrast and overexposure as yours turned out
crosshatching loks like it doesnt have any cosistency and looks a bit too rugged
try to make it more soft and unperceptable, if that is your aim, or with bold strokes, which arent placed randomly, but in a pattern(i hope you can understand:))
usually the 2 lines connecting the upper lip with the nose get closer to the base of the nose, they dont remain parallel;)
overall its a progress, but you need to get rid of some habbits that will bring u down in the future:)

oma
July 26th, 2006, 07:28 AM

thanx for the props in my sb mate. These last ones are looking muuuuch better!! Lot more attention to structure! When rendering the hair, don't try to render every single hair or draw line as you have here, rather block it out and start creating a texture within that - don't think that makes sense... go check out the pros on this forum to see how it's done.

I'd also suggest not just doing selfportraits - try drawing other people too, and post some face studies!

wow oma awesome progress - using some of the softer graphites really pays off. I think your mind is decieving you when it comes to the eyes though - the eye banks and skeletal structure is more important than the eye - establish those before you get to the eyes and lay a bit more emphasis on their structure. This will give depth to the face. Sometime it is useful to represent the entire subject only in terms of basic forms. This usually makes the structure stronger and lends more depth to the face.

Good progress - your making really good advancements with every drawing!

Hey oma!
Vette sketchbook hoor!

Keep it up!

hey oma

likelyness has a lot to do with proportions. if you get the proportions right the drawing will almost automatically look like the person. You can recognize one of your friends from far away long before you can clearly see the individual features. It has more to do with bone structure/proportions right than anything else.

Hou op om in tale te praat wat ons nie verstaan nie!

Been some since I've been here, but things are shaping up nicely. Like Jens said, pay more attention to the proportions. Those are very important in creating a likeness, and understanding what you are drawing helps in avoiding mistakes. The lips are feeling a bit too dark, think you can either lighten them up or darken other parts, whichever goes. Other than that, there is huge improvement from #1 to this last one - keep it up buddy!

Hey oma,
Thanks for dropping by my humble SB.Tell me how much time did you take on that sp.Okay tme for some critting.YOu asked for it.the nose seems a bit slanting with respect to eyes.I really think yo could put a little moe contrast .And try not make the hair look like one body .they are single strands close to each other.First make your sp froma photo. Its not shaky the lighting doesnt change. Its better for learning. And also before doing a long drawing try some quickies .they loosen up the hands quite a lot.Lets say do 4 15 min quickies before a hour and a half peice.Theres nothin particular wrong witht this peice. But you have to keep practicing to get better.ANd anothet thing always be satisfied by what you have and never be satisfied by what you do.Be your harshest critic.Becuase no matter what others say at the end of the dya it'll be you who has to make the decisions.
Take car e and keep practicing.

Great progress with a self portraits, man, really! I like it a lot. I`m not too good in drawing heads but here`s something I want to suggest: study carefully proportions and keep in mind perspective when you`re drawing heads. Also try to do studies of a head features - it really helps. Anyway, your drawings getting better and better - first girl in the last post is very good. And thanks for checking my sb! Keep it up!

Hey oma

These are looking better already, great work on them - think you should do more!
It's maybe a good idea to first suggest the head in term of a cube. I always do this and it helps to establish width, height AND depth. This will make perspective on the head a lot easier, and it will be more structural. I think most people around here do it that way. Keep up the great work man!

My main crit would be to make your mid-grays a lot darker. Your last few portraits have been too light grey. The portrait at the top of the page is more accurate in this aspect.

Hey dude

thanx for dropping by my sb so often man - appreicate the feedback!

Last one has an interesting technique, best used with charcoal. You shoudl check out Thomasphoenix's (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=296477&page=12&pp=15) works. He uses the smudging in combination with hatching/pencil strokes. Beautiful drawings.

This last one is looking great. The only thing I see really bothering is the hair being darker than anything else on the face - this extreme contrast creates a focal point and the face falls into the background. Put more dark into the eyes, nose and mouth areas and this will go away.

Great work, keep drawing these heads - you are making great progress!

About your last sketch: I recognized her immediately. Good likeness. Lips and especially eyes are great. The faults in the nose aren't immediately noticeable. I'd say the biggest problem lie in that you drew individual strands of hair. You should have blocked in bigger areas of light and dark and merely hinted at the direction of the strands.

could have sworn I replied earlier ... oh well.

Great new face - structurally there is not much wrong with it - maybe the chin, not sure. The forms of the face are reading much better, you seem to be getting the hang of them. Think you should work on your line some (sorry, I tell this to everyone....). Think about every line you draw and why you are drawing it. Avoid making your lines hairy, try to draw them cleaner but still introducing that variation.

Huge improvement since the first portrait - well done!

Good job on those faces very solid looking and well done ok the proportion are a bit off in some but nothing you can't fix and you are improving all the time. I didn’t read through all the reply’s so i don't know if i can give any advice that hasn’t all ready been given on proportions as i wouldn’t be the best at them myself but here is what helped me. Try drawing lines ie. dot for the eyeball and a line to the nostril try to get the distance right another line to the other nostril up to the ear etc etc kind like joining the dots afterwards can help. And one other thing that helped me draw a pic from a magazine then trace it afterwards i am always surprised at how squashed the face is and how small the eyes are when i trace. Anyway keep up the good work. Hope i helped a little.

Hey man

coloured one is really taking the right direction - background is much better. Try to play around with colours - use cold colours to suggest shadows and warmer colours to suggest highlights. Take a look at zhuzhu's work and see how many colours he puts into one painting and how they make the painting come to life. The sketch is look good too, try to be bolder with your shadows and highlight, don't be afraid to spoil the drawing - just do it! Then you learn what works and what doesn't.

Greak improvement, great work!
Keep it up!

Hey oma!

Strange idea looks great, like the play on black, white and gray. Mentler sometimes does an excercise where he just draws random lines on a page, looking for something. Once he has found something, for intance a face, he starts to render more deatailed into the face. The end result is usually freaky but awesome looking, because he had not tried to describe something with the lines - instead they are free and therefore more powerful. That also ties in with abstract art!

Anyways, great head studies dude, really coming along and you are defintely starting to get round the planes! Well done!

hey oma, Thanks for dropping by my book.
New update are well drawn. There's no obvious things off here. You could use a bit more contrast and avoid the sharp angle on the jar and simplify a bit on the eyelashes.
Don't try to do a drawing exactly like the ref. try to simplify the ref. instead. Weaken the tidious details and harden what you think interesting and represent it to the viewer. :) That's the trigger to do.

August 17th, 2006, 10:31 AM
Hey oma!

Great colour study!

isair is touching an extremely important point here: don't overstate the obvious. Instead of trying to render every single eyelash, draw a thicker line accross the eye to suggest it.

The cutout effect is maing this one look a tad flat, but the forms in the face itself have been handled rather well. Also don;t be afraid to add some darker colours, pushing the contrast! That said, the colour in this one is looking very good!

keep it up dude!

hey man, the portraits look good. My #1 crit is to push the darks. Before you start to render your drawings, find your darkest dark(making that as dark as the lead your using can go) and find your absolute white(this will probably be a highlight). And what i have seen so far is that when you do push your darks, its really kind of "patchy". work on making your rendering look smooth. keep the portraits coming.

Good progress on those portraits Oma, but you still got a whiles to go. I totally agree with Jens here. Use plumblines and check your angles. For instance look at the angle that the outside of your eye is at compared to your nostril. then make sure your drawing reflects that. keep at it buddy. you're only gonna get better. btw, i love those flowers in the first post

hey there! that's looking much, much better, oma! you get a great 3d effect by setting those values, so i really enjoy that last one! the pupils may be a little big, but tobe honest that doesn't even bug me, because over all it shows a lot of expression. next step would probably be thinking more about planes or better: keeping in mind that a head has a front, a back, top, bottom and sides. think of it as a 3d object like a sphere or (like i prefer) a cube.
anyway, love that sp, keep going! cheers,

Again the progress.. <3 Nice shadows at his eyes. Good use of contrast to let people focus on the head and last of all nice shades on the nose.
BUT! now for the crits/suggestions!
- play some more with shadows, put the lights on in a certain corner of your room, late at night, and start your selfportrait. That should make up for some interesting shadows to learn from!
- Your mouth looks a bit "forward", more like its on top of your head, rather than built in. I would suggest to use some more shading there (and especially in between the mouth-chin area, wich usually is pretty dark.
- Hair is done rather quickly, make sure people see WHERE the hair come from. Even if that means u drawing every string of hair, it definately make it a lot more believable that its not somekinda wig (pruik)

Keep updating
Lewis

Hey oma, sorry for not dropping by earlier!

Last one looks great, Lewis is right about the chin/mouth area: there is a shadow beneath the lower lip. Look at someone's face from the side and see how far farward the lips really go. Your hair also needs attention, but I don't think drawing every single hair is necessary: again, try to block it out in basic shapes and shade acordingly. When you draw, squint at your face in the mirror to more easily distinguish between values.

Doing great man - keep posting!
ciao!

Well you sure do a lot of self-portraits and faces and stuff. Careful you don't make those self-portraits too acurate, or they'll use them against you when they call the authorities on ya!

thanks for the comment in mah book!
The self portrait is coming along nicely, but the rendering could do with a bit more work.
Think of contrast, i wanna see blacks, and i wanna see whites.
Give hatching a try.
One method i use is putting a really fat 2b pencil done first, to give it automatic contrast and texture, then laying down the hatching with a 2b pencil over the top.
Keep drawing, the improvement will be paramount in no time

You seem to be getting better with contrast and shading.
Your self-portraits have a couple of recurring issues though.
Firstly, you draw a line around your lips that makes them stand out, and the lines on your bottom lip makes it look too cylindrical.
Secondly, your facial features are usually drawn too big for your head. Especially the eyes. This could be caused by something as mundane as you holding the mirror too close to your face.
Those loomis studies are looking nice though.

August 23rd, 2006, 01:01 PM
ah, loomis :) I didn't do that book, but I think I will in time. And I think you can put what you learned from the book into your own life drawings. Guide lines, simplify forms, etc. And your progressing well. On the last one the core shadow is well done. The nose could use more contrast because it's more poping out than the cheek. Keep up the good works oma. :)

you have done BOATLOADS of work since you first started this sketchbook. i'm thoroughly impressed. anyway, those loomis studies look good, and your latest sp is looking much better- much better contrast, but it's hard to say anything about likeness, since you don't have a photo of yourself up- you should do that. that would help us see any problems you might be having with proportions and such. anyway. thanks for droppin' by the booky, buddy. keep up the hard work

hey there, looking really good. loomis studies are cool and pushing the values worked quite fine. you took care of all the important shadows - one thing maybe that took me a while to discover and helped a lot: changes of form have a soft value shift while shadows normally have a lot sharper edges... great progress, oma!

Oma, I think you did very well in the last one. Good shading and use of light.

This comment is not related to the last one but if you're trying to really improve your portraits you can attack it from a couple of diff angles instead of head on with practice because sometimes you just get stuck in making the same types of errors. I would suggest going to the bookstore and just browsing through a couple of books explaining how the face is structured, how the main lines in the face are layed out. It was about a year ago when I did this and my faces improved dramatically.

Another thing you can do is if you're working from a real photo buy some transparent paper which has straight lines on it and use the lines as guides. They basically split the image into smaller chunks. You can then draw some very faint lines on your piece of paper and produce an almost identical image with this technique. This works on more then just faces but it will again help you to get the proportions correctly. Just study it, look at it, where the main lines are and how the face divides up.

Hope it helps, you really did good on the last one tho. Keep them coming.

Nice progress :)

You made some significant improvement on that last one. A good tip to getting proportions right is to constantly compare landmarks on the face you are drawing. As you sketch in the features lightly, keep track of where each corner of the eyes are in comparison to where the outer edges of the nose lay...ask yourself how wide the mouth is compared to the nose...where the mouth corners are in comparison to the eyes. And also do this horizontally as well, using the ears as measuring points for the eyes and nose.

Keep it up!

Hey man

Will be uploading some stuff hopefully tommorow.

This last one looks great, very beleivable. Still some minor issues though - the eyes have a great feel but the far eye is larger and heavier than the front one, when it should be the other way around. The higher contrast on the far eye makes it pop forward, making the whole face look a bit flat. Something else that bother a bit is that only the eyes have really dark values - the nostrils, lips, chin and hair are a bit too light.

But overall this is very impresseive and a great leap foward, well done. Your improvement is astounding - keep it up mate!

wow, dude the second last portrait is improving dramatically. I see you've fixed the eye structure and eyebrows as well, and now they look amazing. And to me the lip sturcture still needs improvement. Try dotting out the point where structure change and then connect them and enhance them. Loomis draw great lips, or you can check them out too. :) And you can try light your face with a direct light instead of making the whole face hide in shades. Direct light is more easier to draw than indirect light comparably.

Hey Oma, just passing by to comment on your amazing progress, and how your lines and sketches become more confident and better by each post.

Hi, Oma. You've been working hard, great improvement from the stuff you had posted in page1. I love your still life sketches.

Keep on doing those studies :)

Ulver > thanks for you support!.. uhuh, that is what i mean, so we can comment and crit echother.. and offcourse for hour motivation.
but the main pupouse is to do some study's for the same subject. a week noses, a week eye's etc.. so we are all bussy on the same thing. the same study peaces with diffrent refs. etc.

oke did some study's again. some doodle's at school, and a strange funny digiphuckingaround thingy i did yesterday. :D.

Your dedication is ace, oma!!

These are my favs:
SP (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=14734&stc=1&d=1156372717) - excellent use of lighting and shading - probably the most refined so far.
Face (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20711&stc=1&d=1157664460) - really nice portrait, beautiful face, though it would pop out so much more if you applied some darker tones in there. Whip out a 6B pencil, I say!! :P
With the digital overpainting, keep in mind that light doesn't just hit the one side of the face, even if it is pointed in that direction. Look in the mirror under the same lighting, if poss, and you'll notice that light reflects on the bottom part of the chin-jaw on the other side, and maybe along the cheek bone.
Face studies (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21319&stc=1&d=1157823850) - the laughing man on the top right rules!

Keep this up, it'll pay off in time :)

Tons of progress since the first one, and it's been a lot more since you started doing the studies. Keep up the dedication and you will keep improving at a rapid pace! Definately keep focusing on proportion and underlying structure, they are still your weak points. Can't wait to see where you go from here :)

that painter portrait's looking sexy man! if you're using that zhu zhu brush it can get a little frustrating until you get used to it. the trick is to realize that it moves the surrounding paint around like it's butter. when you want to blend, color pick with the alt key, press with the pen lightly and try to stroke accross the form. to soften an edge, i color pick the color of the edge and blend in the direction of the edge. and then i do the same thing with whatever's on the other side of the edge as to not soften too much. not to much to it. just takes some time getting used to. the amount of work you do puts me to shame man. cheers buddy. you're truckin' along great.

Hey oma!

sorry haven't been aroun lately - pretty busy these days. everything is shaping up rather well. Take some of the harshness out of that painter portrait - remember one can be rough.sketchy without being harsh. Don't forget to draw something according to what it is/feels. An orcish warrior would be very rough, whereas a sleeping beauty would be soft and sensitive!

Keep up the good work dude!

The only crit I can think of is the background could be more in harmony, but who cares!

Wakkawa
September 14th, 2006, 05:40 PM
The face is really well done.

Though, I think the hair could use some more work. Right now it looks kinda stiff. There are also a few tiny white lines around the figure, but those could easly be fixed.

sith
September 14th, 2006, 07:45 PM
dood. that's sexiness right there. totally agree with meats. if you do want to harmonize that a bit though, you'd either have to make the shadows on her face a little bluish (sounds like a lot of work though) or put her in a scene that's a little more beige-ish. shadows pick up colors from the surrounding because of reflected light. for instance shadows outside on a clear sunny day are usually somewhat bluish (b/c the sky's blue). don't worry though. maybe you already knew this stuff, but just thought i'd give ya the gist. cheers man. this one's looking fantastic

Johann de Venecia
September 14th, 2006, 07:56 PM
Looks good. Pretty face :)

I think you'd want to bring her into the bg a bit more though. She looks cut and pasted on there. Even then, you'd want something to connect the two, blue cast light on the face, cooler shadows would do the trick.

Keep it up, Rob. Its looking sweet :)

Love the color of the last portrait. Also beautifully rendered. The white is a bit distracting though and the edge needs a bit refining I think. Especially the cheek part, the white makes it pops up even nearer than the nose. Great piece anyway! keep posting more bro.

Hey man! Thanx for dropping by my book!

painting looks really good. Tough I strongly suggest you try to pick them yourself. Colour in painting doesn't work the same way it does in photos. In painting you need to used complementary colours in order to create contrast, depth and form, but this isn't always true with photos. Take matters into your own hands and think about your colours. You will learn more this way than you will by just picking them. Try it out and keep up the good work dude!

ciao!

Hi oma! Colours in this portrait look very nice! Especially like how you painted ear and hair. Maybe I wrong, but think there`s a little trouble with the perspective of the face`s left side. Anyway the painting looks good - very sunny one :) Keep it up!

Hey Oma, nice pencil sketches. Very coolio.

I would like to see more digital stuff. Try staying away from the color picker though, it will help your development more if you pick it by your own eye.

And will help you spot and use colors better in your own work.

Marty666
October 3rd, 2006, 10:05 AM
Great improvements here! In many of your sketches I notice the left (our right) eye is a bit higher than the other. That may be something to be aware of yourself. The digitals are nicely coloured. Like supervlieg says: don't use the colourpicker on refs. The only reason to do this is to get to learn where colours are found in the picker. Get a couple of photos, probe them using the colour picker and try remembering them. Don't pick a colour and use it on your own paintings, because you won't learn anything from this. Keep em comming!

stine
October 4th, 2006, 08:28 AM
hey oma! glad to hear your rome trip was cool. i second the values-only-suggestion. helps a lot, because you don't get distracted by the huge variety of colors. good to see you're not using plain white for the eyes - the pupils look slightly too small, though. seems like there are some shadows missing (though i don't know your reference). but normally the upper eye lid throws a shadow on the eye ball, the nose throws one and even the upper lip has one on the lower lip. putting those in normally helps a lot "selling" a drawing/painting... anyway, keep it up!

Those last few CG's are looking very good, great work going on there!

The last one is looking good so far, though the part at the corner of her lips looks a bit off. I think we should see a bit more roundness in the cheek there, so it's not like her lips suddenly stop. Or perhaps see the actual corner, though I don't know how your ref looks :). Looking forward to seeing progress in that one.

I think you're making good progress picking the colours on your own. Check out fredflickstone's colour theory tutorial in the fine arts section - it's very helpful and will teach a lot about picking colours. keep picking them by your own, this way you will learn more!
