heres an enviro speedpaint, about an hour. inspired by the DSG topic 'a ship through a city canal' or something like that.

tried the speed paint techniques from the workshop, laying in abstract blocks and values and then pulling and cutting shapes. i'm not too sure about the palette, crit away.

thanks for stopping by.

some stuff from the weekend, sadly not much drawing but i had a lot of fun camping and playing. a tree at our campsite and a contour of some kind of halo chick who will be filled with details and other such things. this is sort of what i've seen other artists do, where they use one contour for multiple designs.

trying to do at least one color piece a day, this is a semi-speed painting-about 1.5, started with a random shape and worked it until i got something that looked like something.

Your speed paints are getting better and better. I need to get my ass into gear and get photoshop (and preferably a tablet). I like the pencil one from a couple of updates ago a ton. The girl in the motorcycle helmet one, that is.

Rock on.

another sketch, about .5, as i was looking through some reference photos a particular section of one caught my eye and inspired this. the values surrounding a light fixture looked so much like a belly button and distended belly...i borrowed the palette from the photo(didnt color pick) and played around, trying to describe form with value and picking a light source.

by using the palette from the photo, which i took of my hallway, i was able to move away from the muddiness that i sometimes get stuck in when painting on the fly.

thanks to all who stopped by, would like to take the time to respond personally but gotta bounce.

Wonderful pencils and color work,

I especially like your last post and the idea of taking a set of colors from a reference image and using them as a palette for a new pic.

Great work and ideas too!

Keep it going,

July 26th, 2006, 07:15 PM
nallen-thanks, i think i'll try more of that color reference technique since my on-the-fly stuff gets so muddy. this next piece really started to get on my nerves after awhile and so it got abandoned, i will eventually work up some pieces covering different fantasy 'races' but i think i'll have to try a different approach, i'll start with a scanned pencil rendering and go from there, much like the headhuntercyborg girl above.

i want to master digital freestyle painting and so i decided to go back to the basics and work from a reference photo that i took of the hostel that i stayed at in montreal for the workshop. decided to use a hard edged brush at 100%opacity for laying in value and color, started to work as i would with oils, laying in monchromatic values but then decided to lay in the colors as i saw them and worry about the values later. as i finished i set the pen to opacity jitter to blend some of values. about 1.5.

sorry for the lack of updates, i've been intensely enjoying my summer break. a couple of sketches from the past week of some kind of creature, a rough layout for a series of paintings that i am starting, and a revisited line drawing of a halogirl that i applied some color to.

a hello and thanks to everyone who stopped by.

recursive-thanks for subscribing, i'll try to keep this sketchbook going strong.

Kick ass man, I really dig the second to last one in the first post, with the walker bot emerging from the fog. Do you do underdrawings for the PS paintings, or do you whip them out on the spot?

cosmicbeanbag
August 7th, 2006, 02:16 PM
boognish-that particular sketch was a freestyle, i rarely work that way since the results are usually atrocious-and that is no BS...i prefer to start with an idea of what and where i am going, that was a happy accident.

some gibberish envelope sketches and moleskin stuff. the moleskin is nice for scribbling and note taking, mine is about 50/50 words/drawings. these are thumbs for a couple of short stories that i am concepting for fun/portfolio.

more thumbs. the ogres of the story will be more tech advanced than our hero's. this is a mobile tank thing that they ride and raise hell on. based on a hummer that hit me on sunday...the jackass.

i realize that they may not look like much but they are helping me to figure out exactly what the thing is gonna look like. very important since the vehicle will play a major part of a cover design.

more momotaro stuff. if you dont know he meets up with a monkey, a pheasant, and a dog who help him in his battle against the ogres. these are sketches during crits and lectures that i wasnt too interested in. i really need to get on the ball with this project.

Wow very expressive linework, the old man at the top is great :) I'd love to see more studies from life, especially value studies paying particular attention to the gradation from light to dark.

and just for kicks, heres the project i'm working on for an interactive design class. its a web based menu of a diner that i dig. its called the paper moon diner and it is by far the most visually interesting diners i have ever been to. there are toys and manequins and whatnots glued and displayed EVERYWHERE.

i wanted to create a web menu/site that reflected the atmosphere of the place. as an illustrator i figured to draw the whole thing instead of the usual boring web style graphics, i'll add textures and layers and paint it. i aslo want to keep the sketchbook feel of it and so the wrinkles and blue lines will stay and probably be ehanced. heres the url to the site that is up now.

Wow, this is seriously hot stuff. Nice menu, and the palettes on these latest enviros are awesome.

dave from wyoming, madhatter106, Andy P, koroshiya001-thanks for the ego strokes.

MrBobMarley-i'm working on the color stuff, mostly acrylic and too big for my scanner. i'll get around to taking pictures someday soon.

darkwolfb87-yeah man, drawing from life and the value studies you mention are invaluable to understanding the world and being able to create a believable fictional world. and the study of value and gradation in my opinion would greatly benefit my painted work. but after five years of school and nothing but life drawing its time for the imagination to run wild. cheers.

more momtaro stuff. thumbing around the house that momotaro grows up in, i played with the idea of a house that was alive and mobile, then remembered howls moving castle and dumped it. for my senior project i'll be doing four painted 'comicbook' covers and one promotional poster for the 'series' the final draft was inspired by a commercial i saw for the us marines, and who says tv is bad for you?

hey are you in the boston area? i noticed one of your advertisments for Paper (i think) and i remember one of my suite mates tlaking about going to a club or somthing called paper ;x

anyways i mloving your processes, that is what i have been trying to attempt with the stuff from my imagination, and i want more color! your digi are great yo.

cosmicbeanbag
October 25th, 2006, 11:34 PM
jdeegz-wasnt me, i live in baltimore. more color stuff coming as the development of this project comes along.

some thumbs for ogre island. the idea being that the island is built upon the ruins of a submerged city, the ancient infrastructure holding up and being used as the foundation.

just got a double-end caligraphy pen and am digging the lines i can make with it.

a few color studies for momotaro, i keep going back and forth with what works and what doesnt. the horns will have to go since the ogres have horns galore and momotaro having horns would just make the whole thing too horny. haha. i've considered bare head with perhaps a japanese hat so that some expression could be shown. argh!

cosmicbeanbag
October 26th, 2006, 12:08 AM

cosmicbeanbag
October 31st, 2006, 11:51 AM
MarkWinters-thanks man, i'll try to keep making more things for you to look at.

some thumbs for the helmet and armor momotaro wears to fight the ogres. i like the designs where his eyes are showing but dont feel they are futuristic enough. the cyclops design is a cliche but hope that i have created something fresh by incorporating design elements from traditional samurai faceplates.

the gauntlets and boots thumbs were done during some presentations in english class. still working on a design that is functional and reflects the context of the story.

i revisited the meyerson study to incorporate it into the story and take it away from the reference. dunno why i didnt do this in the first place. someone said once that i should constantly ask myself "what else?" that should be my mantra.

cosmicbeanbag
October 31st, 2006, 10:30 PM
another not so speedy speed paint. a color study for one of the momotaro covers. i wanted to create a surreal landscape by using pastels. about 1.5

this was a test for an online rpg that i was passed over for and given permission to post since the character itself wasnt a part of the game. i got really irked as i painted the drawing and encourage anybody to take the line drawing that i have here and color it to show me how its done :dur:
