I just returned from a scuba trip from Belize and did these sketches. Drawing on a boat and on a plane can be challanging...

You draw some of the most beautiful, flowiest, long tailed fish I have ever seen. You must be an experienced scuba diver. :painting: Very slimey looking scales.

Good progress -- that last one is particularly good.

My best advice would be to learn to "see" the figure (and everything, really) as a collection of solid, 3-dimensional masses. Get a hold of a George B. Bridgman book if you can. Everything is made of up basic forms, like cubes, cylinders, spheres and cones, kinda blended together. If you can think like this, it'll help a lot in giving weight and solidity to your drawings.

Thanks for the feed back. I do try to draw the solid shapes and block in a lot more than i used to. Drawing the contour of the negative space helps get those shapes in and keeps me from drawing what I think i see verses what i really see.

Hey, thanks for stopping by my SB. Like what you've got going with the fish, when you fill pages like that it seems to give the picture a lot of motion and chaos to it. Good stuff, keep it up. :)

Mmmm Fish... yum.

You've got some good stuff going here TacticallyWacked. Your drawings are very vibrant and full of life. I like that.

Couple things I can point out. On the early sketches there are some dots that really caught my eye. Not sure if they are marks where your pen/pencil came down hard or maybe just artifacts from scannning. They did distract from the overall drawing though. Also, if your using a mechanical pencil and wan to get a more smooth render you can try pushing the graphite around with your finger a bit. Just depends on what kind of feel your going for, thatched or more blended.

Take care
D

iMiaM- Hey thanks for coming over to my book =) I def. enjoy sketchbook pages which are filled up with anything and everything. Even if the sketches aren't related the page itsef becomes a composition.

Donovan V- Hmmm...I'm not sure which dots you mean but I will try to get a higher quality scan if possible.

I haven't been using pencil so its will be hard to blend =) I have blending sticks and such for pencil but I enjoy regular ball point pens. No erasing forces me to think about my lines while drawing. However I do need to bust out the lead holder soon and get back to pencil

There is something to be said about the thatched/hatching look. I often like the asthetic is brings but at the same time I have tried blending it.

Anyway, thank you for taking a look at my sketches. I love the feed back!

The last sketch is very nice... I like how you drew very loosely with the pen and how you changed the texture of the cap so that it is more 3 dimensional. Very nice! Post some more fish pictures

Your fish are awesome, your faces look nice, but the shading could look smoother. Try shading with the side of the pencil, so it's almost flat, it works for a more consistant and smooth looking value.

Thank you! Glad you like my fish =)

I am actually using a ball point pen on these drawings so I can't really blend as I would with a pencil. You aren't the first to point this out actually....makes me think I should use pencil more but I love pen.

You kill me with that pen work TacticallyWacked. I'm sure doing all that work in the "non erasable media" sure make sure more sure of you line work. I know the stuff that I do with pen looks like a 5 year old did it cuz i cant erase! lol. Good stuff youve got some nice gusture work goin!

Good works going on here.
I agree and disagree with
copying the works of others.

One should never approach any
drawing with the attitude that you
are copying something.
Analyze and interpret.
Think about what the artist has
done and why.
Go beyond the surface detail and
investigate the underlying forms.
When you see a value/tone shape
ask yourself why it is there and
what it is describing.

The other very important answer to
your question is yes analyze and interpret
the drawings of others.

Just make sure that they are true masters
of the art.

I think you could learn be analyzing what I do
but could get into trouble if you merely copy.

Another thing.
Don't confuse proportion with anatomy
People comes in virtually all shapes and sizes
the parts may very in size and shape but they
are the same parts.

In other words, we are all made up
of the same parts
(anatomy)

The relationships of
those parts may vary
(proportion)

The short answer is to
work one third from memory/imagination,
one third from life and
one third from the old masters.
(which does not include me)

I feel I have been in a bit of a rut in terms of drawing since my last post. Here is stuff from the mind.

SHOBUNKIN- I love you! Thanks for nagging me to keep posting =)

MENTLER- Thank you for stopping by and responding to my post on your thread. Your feedback is appretiated! I have been tyring to draw from reference so much I feel I am having a hard time drawing from my mind. The case used to be the opposite for me. In any event I have tried to do some more form my mind.

Hey man! i like the stuff from your imagination! Snakes lizards and fish, and everything inbetween! Haha! Hey,about being in a "rut" i think this happens to all of us, you just gotta keep pushing!

An exercise i like to do, based off of Bobby Chiu's Ultimate Art Workout, is to choose a subject you are intersted in, like say anatomy or an animal-whatever, draw this "subject" from life, photos, or another artist,(when drawing from another artist, try to think how that artist was thinking) Then try to draw your subject from imagination. This is a great warmup exercise, and youll get alot of good experience.

I like your stuff, i want to see more!!!! :yayca:
