So I disappeared there for a little bit... I was doing a working vacation in Oslo, Norway hanging out with my good friends slash (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2782129#post2782129) and mischeviouslittleelf (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=110284&page=9999999)...and by hanging out, I really mean that I was living with them, eating their food..stealing their girlfriends etcetera...when I got a job offer to work for Gameloft fulltime at their Redsteam Studio, in Shanghai, China. I didn't really think much about it, and said yes. Shortly after I realised how much freelance work I had lined up that I had to finish before I started working there. That's when I fell off the map. I did two months worth or work in less than half the time, and still managed to get drunk here and there...
So after a lot of paperwork, there was more paperwork to be done, and as it turns out, you can only get Chinese visa by going to the country where you have your passport. China is very picky about these things...no one told me. So after going to the Norwegian Chinese Embassy, and finding this out the long way...I hopped on a flight to NYC, USA. something like 7 hours travel time, and I was lucky enough to get randomly screened in my stop-over in Iceland. I got free water and some cookies, but I was pretty hungry and wasn't allowed out of the tiny holding area until my flight arrived.
Flew to NYC, and found out how convenient public transport is in NYC. Had a liiiiiiittle bit of freetime, and met up with Nov (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=44021&page=2) and his gf for some dinner+drawing. He helped me find pretty cheap hotel not too far from where I needed to be. I spent an entire day soaking wet from torrential rains sitting in the Chinese Embassy in NYC, then as they were closing, got my passport back with a fancy zvisa to china. Next day, I was on a bus headed up towards Boston...and spent the night at my beautiful bearded warrior friend's place.[aka Dan (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=100047&goto=newpost) ] and saw dave (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=67096&goto=newpost)and chelsea (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=95572&goto=newpost) and their adorable puppies.
The next morning I was on a train and then some more busses, and finally ended up at my parents house. Got to see my family, and grab a few items for my trip..and the next morning I was on a flight to Shanghai. 1 layover, about 20 hours total travel time. It was somewhere around when I got to the hotel, I realised :wtf: I'm in China...and I toooooootally didn't know any Mandarin when I got here. Slowly picking up some basic things, but still a loooooong way to go before I can even really hold a conversation.
So since coming here, I've been working fulltime, and have been doing freelance as well, so my motivation to continue to sit at the computer and do personal work was very low when I had the free time.
I finished my old sketchbook, but I don't know what happened to it, I think I left it at my parents house in the USA, so no scans of that one, but I started a new one, and have recently started using it again hahah

Life is full of adventures. Glad to hear that you are working now and got all of that I don't know what to call it, situated. No luck yet with me, gotta do some DandD samples for WOTC. The Senior Art Director liked a couple of my works, so I gotta pull the awesome outta my ass and do something worth his time. Nice Oils paintings I am assuming. I hope that you are having fun doing them. I am withdraws right now, because I havent worked with them in a long time. A year too long... Keep it up though Platts. I hope to see you come back with the regular updates. All in the spirit of fun... *fart*

observation sketches and studies are looking pretty sweet bro, and that's a killer view btw :)
EDIT: Hey man, you asked me in my thread whether or not I do personal work, and I do, but usually its just my assignments from school...that's something I'm trying to branch out into, to become more creative and develop my own ideas. It's like I've got these awesome images in my head and I can never put them down on the page, so I usually just resort to studying to fill the void...think it's about time I actually get over it and try to do something sweet, since you and a couple other people have been asking about it
And thanks for the graph, it really encouraging to know that others feel the same way, not just me!
Thanks again man great work again and I'll see ya round :)

You lost your sketchbook? Hope you'll find it soon (or your parents). I was hoping to see some more pencil pages like in post # 1243, the last ones are different (less rendering).
If you want to learn faster the chinese language, try to get some Jackie Chan DVDs with english subtitle or try to get a language DVD called "Rosetta Stone". It's very usefull to learn any language fast.

you have some sweet pencils in here! I am constantly finding that people who reach a decent level of skill with a pencil don't bother to upload their sketches, and only do their digi-paints. You are an exception to that! Great stuff, I particularly like the dino-skeleton ones.

I already know enough basics to get around, and where I fail short...I just call one of the bilingual chinese people I know :P

odayga: thanks!
smokenmirrors: I think traveling puts a lot of things into better perspective...there's really a lot to see out there, and it's sad that so many people don't even leave their hometown...
ThomasM: thanks dude! I'm pretty lazy about drawing with pencil :S I don't even know where my current sketchbook is exactly :P
oren90: thanks man! yeah the apt has a cool view, but I actually don't spend too much time staring out the window...mostly just staring at computer screens :P
Teundeboer: hahah I can only post as much as I do. I'm real busy doing freelance when I'm not doing regular work :P
ThabisoMhlaba: thanks dude! it has been a while...
Mike Butkus: thank mike! the dragon sketch was from imagination. I can't really think of anything clever to say as a rebuttle :(
p sage: thanks man!! there's like 1000000000x more fireworks than that...all day and all night long :nohope:
So this is about the extent of the personal work that I've done since my last update. All the rest of my time as been spent working, doing freelance, more freelance, and then when I'm not doing those, I just can't be arsed to draw, so I do fun things like play videogames, or lay on the floor listening to audiobooks and resting my eyes.
In other news, it looks like the studio I'm working at is moving from Shanghai to Singapore sometime around march or april! I'm looking forward to another exciting adventure!!!

I saw this was released on the internet somewhere, so I thought I might post it here. It's from Eternal Legacy. It was a collaboration at the office...I worked on this while waiting of feedback from a different project I was working on. It's also quite old, but anyway...All I did was clean up the 3/4 view drawing and then rendered it for final approval. A coworker did the lines.

I reckon I've forgotten what I'm doing, but here's some work from an indie game that's gone into Beta:
http://blight.ironhelmet.com/ (http://blight.ironhelmet.com/)
Blight of the Immortals is an online cooperative strategy game that pits a host of fantasy creatures against their undead counterparts. Blight of the Immortals is in early beta right now. Sign up and give it a try!
Iron helmet makes indie games, and their last game [Neptune's Pride] was pretty cool. Edge Mag said Neptune's Pride was in the Top 3 indie games of the year, and PC gamer said it was the top web game of the year, and also said it was the 50th best game of all time! Hopefully Blight will be at least as successful!!

Blight of the Immortals is an online cooperative strategy game that pits a host of fantasy creatures against their undead counterparts. Blight of the Immortals is in early beta right now. Sign up and give it a try!
Iron helmet is an independent games publisher, and their last game [Neptune's Pride] was pretty cool. Edge Mag said Neptune's Pride was in the Top 3 indie games of the year, and PC gamer said it was the top web game of the year, and also said it was the 50th best game of all time! Hopefully Blight will be at least as successful!!

metal fingers: thanks man!!!
so I thought I was banned or something, because i couldn't access conceptart.org for the last month and a half. Apparently there is some problem with my old username, and everything breaks when I try to log-in. Not really sure what the issue is, but seems like the new username works fine.
Relocated to Singapore from Shanghai, China. Pretty expensive here, but really nice weather! I'm looking for some more freelance work to do as well! [did I mention it's expensive here in singapore?]
here's another collab I did with clo (http://ecartez-vous-jarrive.blogspot.com/) and was chipping away at in my free time. She did the lines, and I did the colors~

Hello Devin!
I hope you re doing well in Singapore! :D
I saw Clo was speaking french on her blog, are you from France or do you speak french also? Anyhow, it must be sweet & inspiring to travel & see new places!
I really enjoy the collab you made with her, the big ears are wonderful. :)
I also LOVE your concept art, could we call the style painterly cartoony?
I may paint in that way & try to achieve that look. It looks lovely!
Keep getting better!
All the best

I really dig your imagination, which is something I think I lost drawing mechanically and from reference a lot. So, thanks for doing what you do and keep up the good work.

The variety and solidity of rendering and design in those bullet witches is enviably awesome. For sheer moodiness, I think my fave is the first version of the floaty-skull (sloop-shouldered and sans bracelets), but really... they just all look sharp.
...Your handling of the fabrics and cuts is so strong... Hard for my eyes not to keep going back to that hovering puffy white dress "II" cutie.
... and then that anti-grav dark-haired "IV" draws me rightwards, then down to "VII", then back up to "II".

First off, I just want to thank everyone again for all of your kind words! It really means heaps to read through all of the comments!!
AND THEN I want to apologize for the reposting of the same shit. There was some confusion on if I could show the cowboy stuff. It seemed like it was fine to post, but then my boss said NONONO TAKE EVERYTHING DOWN FROM EVERYWHERE....and then went OK U CAN SHOW IT NOW shortly after taking it down from everywhere....and when I did this, because I was pissed I just deleted my posts containing the images here, instead of just editing out the image tags [like a smart person would have]

great sketchbook you have here - in particular I like the portraits from a few pages back My only crit there would be to try and merge the shapes of the face a little more - giving the form of the face more believability.
