I'we had some critisism about two caracter pics, that for example int the Spider-Man pic in my first post the foot doesn't seem to hit the Green Goblin. So I tried to excersise on that one today, as such:

And as I make my third post, I already have failed in updating daily, I try to use making a comic book as an excuse, but noone believes me.
I watched a documentary about this two australian guys freediving with sharks, even the great white (freediving, so no cage was used), and made a sketch about it, a wonderful ducumentary that was...

Female anatomy today, or not correct kind a way anatomy... I was just thinking that if I want to be a comic artist, I have to master drawing sexy women. So I was studying what makes certain women look sexy.
I don't know if I succeeded, but I learned something I guess.
One thing I was thinking was the jaw, usually women that are supposed to look atractive, have a pointy jaw. But I sometimes notice really beautiful women with a wide jaw.
Pffff. plah plah, like I would know anything about what I'm doing :)

hey jho.. youre doing good! its the correct placement of the features that make a face look "sexy". A girls face with a pointy chin can be as beautiful as a girls face with a manlike chin... as long as its all well placed.. in fact every girls face is beautiful, isnt it ;) ? Keep on keeping on and watch them proportions.

A few new.
Could someone tell me where I'm standing?
I mean, I don't really have a clue, wether I'm ready to start sending out samples to Marvel, White wolf etc. Or in desperate need of studying, before I can even dream of something like that.
I have never studied art, so Internet is the only place where I see other peoples work, and it seems I'm far behind.
But I'd still like to know wether I stand a change to work as a concept artist or an illustartor with my current skills, and if not, what do I mostly have to consentrate on.

Skill wise I'd say you're an advanced beginner(I consider myself the same), you have some skill but aren't ready to start sending stuff away to comics to work professionally. You need more time to develop a personal visual language. Work on line, construction, proportion and anatomy, and design.
For example in this http://karetar.net/luonnokset/32.gif, the woman looks bigger than the monster guy. Her proportions are wrong, her thorax appears bigger than her hips. Her lines are round, then the monster's are rounder, should give him more angular lines to emphasize solidity and manliness.
A woman's attractiveness is gotten by the proportions of her face in respect to the ideal, smallness/delicacy of her features, and the symetry of her features. The ideal is the thirds and other divisions of the head, the canons of proportion that started with the Greeks. Small deviations from the ideal result in character, the girl could be quirky but cute. Too many deviations results in ugliness. You tend to make the middle or bottom third too long. Also emphasize roundness and obliquity in woman, their features tend to be organized by diagonal lines. Men tend toward perpendicular lines, the cross or crucifix being the manliest symbol there is.

August 17th, 2006, 03:26 AM
Big thanks to armando, thats exactly what I was hoping to get. In time you just go blind to your own works, and have no real idea how good you are, or aren't.
The monster is actually a throne made of bodyparts, but I guess it my error if people think its a monster. :)

Tried to give this a sense of movement, I'm not 100% happy with the result, but I think it turned out fine.
http://karetar.net/luonnokset/36.gif
I can't pinpoint the error in this one, is it the leg weight is on? Something is slowening the kick...
But I think I did ok with the anatomy, for such a hard position anyways...

:) hello Jho, first off.. flip the picture over.. You'll quickly see the mistakes in your photo.
i really wished you drew the rest of her foot thats in the air. Her for arm on the left..is a little bit tooo short..
the width of her the lower portion of the calf..the area thats about to meet the ankle.. way to thin.. hell the calf..looks like a chicken leg.. : /
the lady's face.. her eyes look a little bit off.. her lips hmmm...try to refix it a bit. other wise its looking pretty sweet...
ah one more thing.. i just thought off.. her right arm.. when someone is kicking in that position.. the arm.. isnt relax.. try doing the move yourself..or ask someone to do the move for you. you'll notice that the arm doesnt hang straight down. the arm is usually in the area of the chamber (chest area). look at a couple of photos of martial arts techniques.
sweet pics though :)

Nice studies dude.
My problem with the most recent one is that the foot goes off the page. That's a compositional no-no. Even if you end up doing something worthy of the Lourve, if you have things going off the page (unless it works compositionally), it wont be adored.
Goodbye..fromthevoid

I can tell you are working at this, and you wanna get somewhere and be someone. Your influences are diverse too, demonstrating your seriousness to your craft. Yet you still manage to have fun, showing your spirit is unbreakable. I hope you are successful in this learning endeavor.
But really, do you need to draw the penises?
Jho
August 22nd, 2006, 07:41 AM
Thanks White Rose! The crits were really true too. Except I didn't find any mistakes easier by flipping the picture, don't know why, I know it usually works.
Moysturfurmer: Nice to hear you liked them :D
And I actually draw the whole foot, just cropped it whit ps as I didn't like it. These are just sketches after all :)
Goodbye..fromthevoid: Thank you, I'm really flattered. And yes, I feel an unbearable urge to draw penises :D
No, actually I'we noticed I have to push myself a little to draw them, and keep noticing that I don't draw any female sexual organs for some reason. Guess its embarassing in someway or something, and I hate that it is, but as Loomis put it
If you are offended by the sight of the body the Almighty gave us to live in, then put this book aside at once and likewise give up all thought of career in art
So, I know its a bit awkward, but I can think of no reason not to, sorry :)

hey man! your anatomy studies are looking good - I just suggest you try and use your new knowledge more when you're drawing from your head! the two are worlds apart - just compare your torsos with your last post! (I know, sometimes you're aiming for a comic style, but still!). it's like when you start drawing from your head you throw everything overboard haha
I think you should try drawing people from life some more - your family, or on a bus. that certainly helps with the faces.
try and get you lines more confident/less scratchy.
I like lots of your ideas, but they would look better if you paid more attention to my first crit.
looking forward to seeing the digitals! I like the bear/wolf one, but I think starting on something easier would be a better idea!

Thanks to some friendly advice I started to study Hogart's Drawing the Human Head. I have to admit, I haven't given Hogart the respect he deserves in the past. I just thought him as "the guy who made Tarzan back in the day". But now as I began to study his books more closely, I have learned alot.

Its been really wonderful for me to have this sketchbook for the past 6 months, and I thank everybody.
I'm saying this because it seems I have to start working again, and last time that happened I had no time to draw, nor did I have the strength to lift a pencil after 8 hours of warehousing :)
I feel really trapped because of this (I take freetime and try to learn as much as I can about drawing and painting, then the money runs out and I have to work, and by doing it I get relly rusty and have to start all over again).
I understand that thats life, and everybody has to go throught the same thing, but I thought that maybe someone here has somekind of advise.
Or an idea of an job where I could still learn and earn my living. I really want to be an concept or comic artist, or maybe illustrator. So any kind of comments about getting to the business is more than appreciated.
And by the way, of course I am trying to get in school next autumn, but there are no really suitable schools for me in Finland. Most art schools here are for media professions (and I really wouldn't want to work in an newspaper or tv). Graphical designers and 3D designers are the closest professions they train over here.
Hope someone had the strength to read through this whining..

Thanks for the post in my sb, those are always appriciated.
Very dynamic figure work. You have a good grasp of how you want to pose your figures, which I highly important for comic work. I know that you are going for a stylized look, but I notice that you seem to be struggling with proportions and faces. I'd suggest that you balance your comic work with lots of photo reference and master study work. Try to do some super realistic figure studies along with your comic work each day. Once you learn to draw the figure and face realisticly you will understand why and how to stylize your art more effectively. Your lines look good, just keep practicing.

Thanks alot Q-Caddlewick!
I'm currently trying to study human head, as you suggested.
Burne Hogart has been an great help in that.

Bendragon: Thanks. At the moment I'm just trying to draw as much as I can, hope that pays off.
Razorb: Thats what I'm afraid of, I'm such a home person I wouldn't ever leave my front door if I didn't have to. But it seems like all the schools and jobs in this business are abroad. I have lived in Germany and Estonia, and those visits just confirmed that I'm not supposed to leave Finnish borders. So I hope I'll find a place to study here, and hopefully later, a job.
Once an italian girl came to me in train (while I was sketching) and said that I should really come to study art in Italy. I was terrified (not because of the girl, but because of the idea of having to live in Italy <:/)
So, heh, yes, I have thought about it, but I'm just not happy with the idea.
I think Hogart has been a really big help with faces. I'm trying to get my shoulders and measures right, lets see what Hogart has to say about that...

Heya all. I was in a comic expo at Tampere yesterday, where the superhero thing I have been doing was released. There were alot of really nice peole, and I bugged some of the big names here [Finland] about how to get into the comic business etc.
I'm almost done with the school application works for the 3D/ digital painting school. I'll post my work when its done (tonight perhaps).

But I figured, its more helpful to me if I post it unfinnished anyways. As people still have a chance to change things.
Please help me with this one, I would really like to get into this school.
http://karetar.net/luonnokset/evtek1_1.jpg
I'm sorry the quality is so bad. Its a A3 work, so it didn't fit into my scanner. I'll try to make a better scann with the next phase.
So, the task was to make a 6-8 picture illustration over text. The text was pretty long, and its in Finnish, so I won't post the whole thing, but it was basically about this guy talking with a "Consule" in Venice. First he (the main character) wonders how the Consule has managed to build a sauna on the roof, and how is it warmed.
The Consule shows him (and 2 other guys) a shed where he keeps the firewood. There is also a Savo-style (savolais-mallinen) boat. The main guy tries to lift it and finds that its really light. The Consule wants to attend to a competition called "Pegata Storica", and he wants the main dude to join him in the contest. (It was said that the contest is started by dropping a gold rign into the ocean. Thats why I drew the hand in the pic #3).
The storyteller (main guy) starts to wonder how on earth are they going to get the boat out of the roof (measuring the doorway) and others get dressed.
They start carrying the boat down the stairs, but a bunch of kids blast a nail-bomb (the boat stops the nails from hitting the men). Apparently the main guy knew it was a bomb because he has seen bombs blast before, others ask where he has learned to recognice bomb blasts, and he replies "in the army". Others ask did he get the scars in his back from war, and he replies that he got the scars from sun bathing too near to a construction area some years ago.

The cube turning into the turtle was actually really really good, the lighting was good, the poses were good, its a great illustration.
I Agree you should do some drawings from life architecture you seem to have a good eye for perspective and buildings.
The inking looks nice, but I think you should work out the figures and forms and try to push them more, either dynamically or realistically before you ink them. You have a nice looking hatching style with the inks, the last panel looks good and has a style of your own to it.
Keep it up, you show improvement.

Haven't posted for a while. I think the working and drawing at the same time thing is getting to me a bit :/
I have been supposed to be drawing new issue of the super hero comic, but have just managed to get 2 pages done, and 8 penciled.
I got into a school, not the 3D one, the test results for that school come in the day after tomorrow, I'm really excited.
And I'm really for the other school too. Now I can stop working for a while, and really start focusing on drawing, painting and getting ready to do this thing as a job some day :D

I like your work. Infact, I LOVE and ADMIRE the flow you have in things
Jho
August 2nd, 2007, 03:53 PM
Thanks Shpow.Iain!
An interview of Jim Lee I once saw, helped alot with getting the flow into characters. Of course I don't do it as well as mr. Lee... yet :)
But a little thing he suggested comic artists to do was quite brilliant; to first sketch the movement, and only then the character itself. Brilliant, wouldn't you say? :D
Hmm. That reminds me of another interview, it was of a Japanese manga artist. He was asked wether he enjoyed his work. Obviously the interviewer wated to get the basic "yes, this is my dream job" answer, but the artist fell silent for a moment, really thinking about the question. Then after a while, he replied "No. No this is like any other job".
I laughed at the funny situation at first, but then I thought wether I really, truly love drawing. And I can't say that I love the process. Of course its a big part of my life, and I start to feel ill if I can't draw for a long time, like when I'm working in a steel factory, or when I was in the army...
I love to get the job done, and watch at my creation. I want to feel proud of my work. That is why I can't be a steel factor worker... There is no point in that. I can't use any speciall skills of mine. I can't be proud of the work after I'm finished.
But drawing can be incredibly boring. My style of drawing is very time consuming, and I often find myself really tired of doing it. In other words, its a job.
But now that I once again have time in my hands to draw, it feels awesome! :bounce:
I tried to take a 1 page/ one day pace, and thought that would be alot. But I find myself wanting to do more!
I hope this won't change soon, I'm getting pretty much done :D
So here is another page, its not finished yet, but I also sketched 3 pages and inked 1 today :D

I'm extremely busy with the comic right now, so I don't have anything to post today. Maybe later tonight...
The school has started, kind of. We have had two orientation days, mostly getting to know each other and the school. It has been fun. Apparently my class has mostly err... nerds, and less artsy people. Some I have been talking to, say that they can't draw at all. And suprisingly, there are alot of girls too (5 I think. of 15), in 3D, who would have guessed? :)
8% of applicants got in (80 of 1019). So as you can see, its really hard to get into a school here. But now that I'm in, its completely free, and the quality is supposed to be really good.
We had a little party today. The tutor students took us to Helsinki, and we played games and... stuff. Mostly we just sat on the grass and talked, I really enjoyed it. I got to know some pretty nice people :)
I also visited an art store and got all the suplies we are supposed to get, and there was ALOT of it!
Well, anyways. I'll try to post something later...

Did a character design for the superhero comic I'm drawing. Hes costume is based on the finnish crest (is "crest" correct, had to use dictionary for this one :)). Well the logo of finland :D ... this thing (http://plaza.fi/s/f/maf/wallpaper/suomileijona.jpg)

And also I had my first 3D picture reviewed. The teacher said it was ok, just a bit dark (I have lightened it a bit with photoshop for your viewing pleasure). He liked the bottle thing. If only I learned to make liquid now :D

Hi all. I haven't posted for a bit... I have worked with a new laptop, that my dear father gave to me, and as the scanner isn't plugged into it, I haven't scanned any of my scraps.
We have done alot of 3d at school, and I think I'm getting a faint grip of it, but there are still alot of things that confuse me, I'll just try to double my effort and I think I'll be fine.
Here is the last work we did, the topic was "beach coffee house". I'm very disappointed with how it turned out, and I think my teacher didn't like it much eighter. I mean there is potential, and maybe I'll finish it some day. But its just broken somehow.
Well, I learn from my mistakes...
http://karetar.net/piirustukset/paska_01.jpg
This one I like alot more. The next assingment is "a toolbox", and I'm making a hammer for it. I can't take all the pride though, as we (the whole class) made it together with the teacher.
http://karetar.net/piirustukset/vasara_01.jpg
I have also done alot of live drawing and its awesome. I have been thinking of taking photographs of the big drawings I'we made in the class, and post some here.
We got a new model, a man this time, which is great, as now I get alot of practise with both male and female anatomy.
Both of the models we have had, have been in almost perfect shape though. And it would be nice to try to draw someone really short, old, heavy etc.
School is still amazing, and I'm loving every second of it. My classmates are really nice too. Meroid Prime 3 (for Wii) just came out here, and I just had a couple of classmates over trying it out. I really enjoy their company, and I learn alot about art from them too.

I scanned some drawings from my sketchbook at school... And (again) forgot the camera. We had an awesome life drawing class today, I got out of school at 7:30 PM :)
We did the same pose 3 times, every time pretty fast (20 mins. + 20 mins. + 1 hour) and each time with different tools. I used pecil the first time, then coal, and crayons of some sort in the last piece.
I'll try and take some pics tomorrow, I thought I did pretty good.
Here are the scanns:

I have started making the next issue of SPL (the superhero thing). One character has died (the snowman, he took his own life in another magazine), and the whole thing is about the other characters coping with the fact that his gone.
I think this script is pretty good, it gives some nice depth to the character. For example, Finlander, the leader is trying to be rational, but he just can't undertand why would anyone kill themself. Raaka, the big guy below is just being angry and sad.

Heya guys!
I have done the toolbox thingy further. I think I'm getting a bit better with Max, Turbosmooth doesn't ruin everything anymore, and I'm strating to get hang of materials too.
Here is tonights achievement (mostly the beer bottle, the screw drivers we made at school). I'm pretty happy with it. The glass might be a bit too bumpy, and there is a problem with the labels, but I think I'll be able to fix it tomorrow at school.
I notice sometimes that I'm still a bit afraid of working with 3d objects though. Starting to work is a bit slow at times, and I think its because I really don't feel comfortable with the 3ds Max yet. Its all so new to me. I guess I just have to do alot of 3d :)

We are studying lighting in Max at school. The teacher said that its the most important part of making 3d. You can have rushed modelling and texturing, and save it with lighting, but not the other way around, he said. I'm starting to believe that.
The object we are using is really simple. just 2 boxes on top of each other, hole in both of them and 4 boxes holding the upper one up. The texture is just gray with some red-brown cellular bump map.

More character sheets. This one is called Vaakuna, he is dressed like the Finnish seal lion (http://www.rockpaidat.com/shop/images/Leijona_hihamerkki.jpg) (not seal as the animal, seal as the mark, or logo, or what ever it is :P). I think it turned out pretty well. Better than the others anyways.
http://karetar.net/luonnokset/spl/vaakuna.jpg
BTW. I'm sometimes a little worried that I'm being labeled as a militaristic nationalist for doing all these violent Finnish superheroe comics all the time
I mean, the name of the comic I'm drawing is "The League of Finland's Protectors" (roughly translated). And could easily be the name of some propaganda magazine or something
Err. Well thats not the case. I really like my country, but thats all. Actually I'm a pretty pasifistic person, I hate all kind of violence (I like martial arts though, but its not violence in my oppinnion when your opponent is willingly your opponent, and no one is really hurt. If you know what I mean ).
Right... Thats all about that. And I'm sure this was clear to almost everyone, but you never know what people might think when you're whole persona is being displayed by merely words on a computer screen.

The trip to the Caribbean and NYC was just mindblowing. I think this was my second or third time outside European borders, and everything was amazing. If you ever get a change to go to barbados for instance, I strongly suggest you go, it was beautiful there!
3 Days was just too little for New York. I looked for a comic store the whole time, and found one... as we drowe pass it in the cab to the airport :'(
But thats about that. I still think the last 3d pic I did was really rushed and the outcome was pretty poor. So now I just have to do my best with the next one. I still have about 2 weeks to get it done.
I have alot of comic pages to do also, so its going to be a busy years start for me. Its ok though, maybe I'll learn alot from all the work and get to call myself a professional someday.
Yup, so here is a rough sketch of page 10 for the superhero comic thing:
http://karetar.net/luonnokset/spl/spl_mtl_010h.jpg
The next 3d assignment is "a musical instrument". And I'm making drumms. I thought of original drum set. Then I decided to make them a bit different, like elcronical drum pads, toy drums etc. Finally I came up with a set of cauldrons, fryingpans, kettles etc. Played by a monster. The main focus is on the geometry, and making really precise models similar to real life objects. My wife is a chef... we have alot of kettles, so I think I'll do fine this time :D
Here is a frying pan I started to make (the geometry is almost finished, but I'll still work the materials alot):
http://karetar.net/piirustukset/3d/paistinpannu_01.jpg
Its a bit dark, as its a teflon pan...
Finally, here is the rough start of the model of the monster:
http://karetar.net/piirustukset/3d/morrikka_01.jpg
I always like the wireframed version of everything organic I try to do... Any suggestions to fix that?
Just more edges?

Oh yeah... And I hope you all had a nice Christmas (or Hanukka, or Jule, or just vacation). And I wish you all a wonderful new year!

It hit me that I really have to learn how to model cars. Because I'll want to work with games some day, and I just might to get involved with a racing game. I know next to nothing about cars, so it would be good practise, as I need to draw them in comics too (as cars tend to fly around when superheroes start fighting :) ).
So... here is my first attempt to make a car. For some reason I got a bit excited and worked with it for much longer I thought I would... Well, there is still aliot to do, but as I don't normally care for cars, I thought modelling it would be a bore.
I still haven't done the tires, back of the car, bottom or alot of the details, but I think I managed to muster out a pretty good start.

My first assingment is to texturise a particle accelerator (LHC in Geneve)
At first I was a bit overwhelmed, but now I think I can manage this just fine. The model is a bit messy though, its all triangles and alot of unnecessary geometry, but after 2 days of tweaking, I got some textures in there.

Phew. Long time, no post.
I have been working, and though I have painted during the summer, it has mostly been work related, and I haven't been sure if I can show it here...
Work ended (or, actually I'm on vacation) last friday, and the schools should start 1.9, can't wait. Working as a 2D/3D artist was mind blowingly awesome! I did textures, modelling, digi painting, brainstorming in meetings... Just a dream come truth. The only negative thing was that the pay, it was a bit... flimsy. But, to tell you the truth, I would have done if for free.
Painting/ drawing wise I'm in an odd spot. I feel like I have painted quite alot, but don't seem to get better. Maybe I'm painting the wrong stuff... Maybe I need to do more studies, and paint stuff I haven't painted before...
I'm also very busy with all kinds of things. I have 3 comick book in the works, the school is about to start, I still have some work stuff to do (3d and 2d) and I promised to do some concept art for a Star Gåte game (modification) made by whirlwind-games (http://www.whirlwind-games.com).
Here is a slpash page from one of the comics I'm making:

Colored it, and played with the background... I desperately need some undertanding of phases. I always just sketch a little and jump straight to details

Some life drawing.
Today I realised something about drawing... And basically about skills of any kind.
I remember when I was doing Wing Tsun, my sifu said to me that masters and beginners are alike, that the "circle completes" like that.
I understood, kind of... But then, today I was once again struggling with my 1 minute croquins you see here, below. It seemed I could never get them done in time. Scroll back this thread and you'll see many of my life drawings are incomplete.
So, it hit me. I had to jump straight to the details! I had no time for building the mass, and do all the Hogarth stuff. This is of course something I have always told NOT to do. One of the biggest mistakes beginners make.
Of course this is the idea of fast drawing/painting. But I understand now. To get to the next level, I have to get back to that place where I was when I first started drawing.
Now I know anatomy, now I know how things are supposed to look, so now I have the understanding and experience needed to jump staright to the details sometimes
...Not that I'm a master... Nothing could be further away from the truth, but... You know...
God, I love school.
...
Am I wrong? How come?
Well.. Here is some of the stuff I drew:

Heya, the thing with going back to more basic stuff is actually a pretty good idea to become more confident, but after that you should push the level again! :D It's even better if you first push yourself into areas that are quite step ahead of what you're actually doing currently and then go back at what you're actually at. This is a principle of learning that pretty much applies to everything that can be learned with practice, at least that's what I've come to experience.
I've btw gone thorugh the whole sketchbook here, too, and have to say there's some good amount of improvement. I like what your comics developed into, they're very dynamic and expressive.
And this one kicks ass http://karetar.net/piirustukset/elainkimara2.png

October 8th, 2008, 04:37 PM
Kurjuus: Thanks alot!
Well, basically what I meant was that you learn the rules, to be able to break them. Of course this is an endless cycle, and the more you know, the more you realise that you don't know anything (clishé, but so true).
I'm not sure if I know exactly what you mean by pushing yourself into areas that are quite step ahead of you, as I'm not sure what that could be... Just taking impossible tasks? Being ridiculously ambitious?
Or maybe that you should try things you haven't tried before?
I have noticed that the less I want to draw something, the more I will learn from drawing it. So I try to draw as much stuff I hate I can, but I should do it more.
Thanks for stopping by, and I really appreciate the encouragement!
We went to The Botanic Garden in Helsinki, with my "image and observation" class today and yesterday to draw plants.
It was really helpful, as I have hardly ever drawn plants. it was suprisingly fun too. I liked the teacher, her critique could be better (not bad at all though), but shes really nice.
Tomorrow we are going to the Finnish Museum of Natural History to draw animals. That is going to be awesome.
Well here are some sketches from the Botanic Garden.

Heya all!
Haven't posted for a while because I bought a new computer a while back, and installed a 64-bit Windows on it. Everything else works fine, except my scanner. There are no drivers for it, so everytime I want to scan something, I have to hook up another computer to the scanner... Its not that big of a deal, really, I have a laptop, but still, I just don't do it as easily when I have to go throught the extra trouble...
Anyways. I have also been really busy with school and other stuff.
I'm drawing comics, here are some pages:

Try get some nicer lines with your pencil. Instead of scribbling the line, try get it down with one larger and free...er stroke with your pencil.
It will make you more confident, and will teach you to get the line correct the first time around, and will overall neaten everything up a large amount.
Good luck.
Jho

Fraz: Yup. I have tried to get my lines more complete. Its hard though, I like messy and scribly lines so much :D
But, I know what you mean, tanks a lot for stopping by to help. I'll try to work on my lines.
Keeping myself relatively busy. We have had a lot of animation at school, which is great. We even had this guest teacher who works for Anima Vitae, Finlands biggest animation studio. We mostly have cartoony animation with stretching characters, and leans heavily on movie making. As I would like to work with games, and hopefully relatively realistic graphics, it would be nice to have some courses that focus on real time 3d, but I cant complain, so far its been really fun end exciting. I just would want to be a huge burden for others if and when I work in the gaming industry some day... Guess thats just something every newcomer has to face.
We attended ACM SIGGRAPHs spring conference last week. I met this one guy from Remedy Entertainment there. Remedy is easily Finlands most well known game studio (Death Rally, Max Payne 1 and 2, Alan Wake). I asked him whether Remedy is taking interns, as it would be just a dream come true to get to work there. I can't think of any other place I would rather work at. Maybe BioWare or Turbine... I would really like to be a part of a MMORPG someday.
Anyway... I haven't shown my face here for a while. I have been reading other peoples threads, but for some reason haven't said anything :/
Here is a small project I'm working on. Its supposed to be a little fight scene between a dragon and an ogre. I haven't really thought it completely trough. Just made the characters... Well, they aren't ready yet...

I was in Rome last weekend. It was pretty awesome. All the art, man... I could have spent weeks just watching things. In places like that I can't help but wonder "what do I have to give to art, hasn't someone already done everything 1000 times better than I can ever do?". I mean, I'm not one of those guys who calls foul when ever a song or movie is a bit like another or whatever. I don't really care. If I like a song, I like it. It doesn't matter to me if its played by a mass murderer or if its completely copied, its still a great song...
Still, when I was looking at Raffaello's wall paintings, it occurred to me, this is the best possible I can get, I probably won't even get this far... I don't even like drawing or painting... I maybe dislike it less than everything else, but I don't have the passion towards it that everyone else seems to have towards something. I have been looking for that something I just couldn't live without, but haven't found it.
I don't know... I just hear all the other people, all my friends who draw, and do 3d and sculpt talk about how its the greatest thing in the world, some of my friends listen to music all the time, my dad is always building stuff, my mom reads books like there is no tomorrow... And all I can think of when I paint is "why isn't it done already? Damn, I still have to color that part, ugh..."
Anyways, I don't really have a point... Neither do I have any sketches from Rome, my scanner still won't work with the stupid Vista.
This is from a dream I had last night. I found a collapsed brick house in the woods with a friend of mine. We started to fix it, but the roof fell down because it was so heavy. I thought the place was quite beautiful, so I painted it.

This one I drew in hospital while waiting. We were having a baby, but she died...
20 weeks of waiting and then no heart beat. :(
Firs a Warhammer character for no real reason and then what I saw when I looked out from my window. It was a guy in wheelchair looking at the trees. Somehow that felt really sad. I guess I was pretty damn sad already though.

I'we been forcing myself to draw in public lately. My hands shake and its aughful, but at least I get something done. I just decided that every time I get a place to sit in train, I HAVE to draw, no matter how crowded the train is.

I occationally play some Warhammer with a friend, and I always lose. He has these alien creatures called Tyranids as his army and I have chaos space marines.
Translation:
Tyranid: Oh! Why did I ever defy the great forces of chaos!?
Marine: Well because all Tyranids are stupid as hell.

I was working on a new page on the superhero thing, and did some studies from myself. This mythical finish god (a superhero in a leather jacket in the comic) is pounding the door of the land of the dead. His brother runs the place, and they don't like each other very much, so he's angry.
People with hammers are hard to draw, and I wanted to get some very dramatic camera angles, so I took some pictures of myself with a hammer (don't laugh... too much here (http://karetar.net/luonnokset/vasara1.jpg), here (http://karetar.net/luonnokset/vasara3.jpg) and here (http://karetar.net/luonnokset/vasara5.jpg)) and studied my arms, shoulders etc.

Haven't posted for a while...
The lack of a working scanner is a big reason, but I have also been really busy.
We are having this project thing at school with the finnish tv channel 4. We are making 2 characters for children's programs. I was put to the concept art team as an AD assistant, so I have been painting and drawing lots of concept pictures.
Before that though, everybody created 2 characters, and the guy from channel 4 picked his favorite. Mine didn't win, but here they are anyways:
http://karetar.net/luonnokset/nelonen_hahmot1.jpg
Here are some of the concept pictures I have painted:
(Sorry, had to take the channel 4 concepts away. As I think it might not be ok to show them before the thing is released.)
We also attended the fall ACM SIGGRAPH in Helsinki, and I met a guy from Futuremark, it's a relatively big gaming company in Finland. I asked if I might be able to have my work placement for school in Futuremark next fall. He gave me his card and said it might be possible. Of course he wants to see my portfolio before that, so I have tried to get that together. Here is a character I'm going to make:

Some very nice works here! I'm impressed!
It seems like your biggest problem as of now are the heads. Your bodies are relatively realistic, but the heads and expressions are JUST cartoonish enough that something seems off. Do a few self-portraits or portraits of family and friends, and see how it works out. You can also draw expressions from photographs, we have some lovely ones over at "The Official Draw from 'what does everyone look like?' thread" (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=152123). Remember, you don't have to go all realistic, but some practice will make your style merge better. :)
Awesome work, though, keep it up!

Good advice too, I think you are right. I do draw from life as much as I can, but its true I tend to draw faces straight from memory, and in so doing never learn to draw them properly... I guess I really have to get out of my comfort zone with faces to make them work.
Thanks again.
Started painting this after playing Fallout 3. A friend of mine said that its fun to create female characters, because you can then paint them :D

I just graduated in 3D visualization, and ironically also realized I need to put all my energy into 2D.
I got turned down in a job interview an was a bit depressed for a while, but now I think I know what I need to do. I'll use my 3D knowledge in my 2D work. I'll be the best damn concept artist or texture artist or UI artist I can be! It's a big relief actually. Now I just need to practice like like there is no tomorrow (no pun intended for the supposed rapture tomorrow).
I started doing quick vehicle studies. I think I'll continue tomorrow by drawing vehicles from life (the little ones below are quick copies of openanewworld's amazing Stormrise concepts found here (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=152372)).

We had my daughter's birthday today, and as people came over, the vehicle drawing I had planned, turned out to be just a couple of minutes of drawing some cars in the parking lot. I also have to go to bed a bit earlier than usual, so today's drawing was pretty limited. I wish I had time like all my friends from school, They can just start drawing when they get out of bed or in the middle of the day or what ever. I have to make time for it specifically :C
I did a quick black on black study of my phone on the cover of my Wacom board. Didn't really get into it as I wanted to, just a hour or two of fast sketching basically.

Sulake has a bit different style from what I'm used to do though. It's really simple pixel art, but I think I could do that just fine, at least the sample was good enough, so I can only hope...
Here's an old piece I'm trying to polish for my portfolio:

Damn weekend wasted, I didn't draw almost at all :C
And the interview is getting closer, I really need to have something great to show them. It's awesome they liked the sample I did, but I want to make a good impression.
Update on the rift environment thing.

I got the job!
I'm Junior Graphic Designer at Sulake Corporation, starting next week. I had pretty much given up hope that I would get a job this year, and was completely focused on practicing and polishing my portfolio. Damn this is awesome \:D/
Almost skipped painting tonight, but managed to compromise myself into random doodling. I put up a Kevin Smith interview in Youtube and randomly took screenshots which I then painted. At least I drew something...

Damn, I'm slowing down, have to pick up the pace.
Last week started with a 3 day lecture by Teemu Haila from HighScore. We formed groups of 1-3 and tried to make a game in those three days. I paired up with a coder and we started making a space ship shooter. I think it went ok, we had to scale our concept down a lot and it became just a space ship racer when we had first thought it would be similar to the scene in Star Wars: New Hope, where they fly through the valley and enemies would jump from every direction. We ended up with a game where you just have to try not to hit the walls, but we got it working and it was fun :)

I modeled the ship and a lot of environments of which we only had time to put a small part into the game.
Thursday work started at Sulake, I haven't done much yet, just got to know people and played Habbo Hotel :)
Friday was the firms summer party, so I guess I picked the right time to start there, it was really fun, everyone seems really nice.
I also gave up on my Rift colossus character and turned it in, I know I'm not going to win any prices, but it got me painting so it's all good.

Someone suggested this one site where you can draw croquis http://lovecastle.org/draw/. It's pretty great, and I've spent some time there now that school is over and I don't get my weekly dose. It's drawing from pictures, not from life, so it's not as good but at least I'm drawing something. I try to get a scanner working soon, but for now here's the only think I can post. One of the pictures I was drawing 1 per minute. Just decided to paint this one a bit further, I'm not sure if I'll continue working on it, it's not supposed to be anything other that just a study.
