very nice concept, loving it :D

Did this one very quickly, I never really paint tho so it doesn't look too good, but I was just planning to start learning it.. been a while since drawing enough, but I'm bound to pick it up again. I just have too. And now I'll take it on real good.
I think I'll post some more stuff with this concept.

This one was so yucky, I had to do it. I should really do these DSGs every day. super fast. Gosh that scene in King Kong creeped me out. Usually movies dont bother me, but that makes me cringe.

They all look great, guys. I'm a little intimidated against actually trying this idea. I sat down, in boredom, and drew a response to the topic. Played with painting and blending for a while, thought it might be mildly entertaining to -someone- out there.

cool stuff people :D How important do you think it is to learn painting with real paint before digitally? I hear different opinions on that one..
kemar - I love the stuff on your site man, got any tips on learning to draw/paint? Keep it up.

Coen- not too easy to answer ;)
Personally I started from tradicional medias and have learned them for 7 years before using digital medium, but it wasn't aware decision , I just didn't appreciate digitals.
But if I started learning now, I would learn thouse both mediums at the same time.
Currently I working with diffrent medias, I use tradicional (pensil, ink, pastels, gouache, watercolour and oils) and digital. You could get a nice result mixing diffrent medias, for example background done in gouache/ watercolour and than scaned and draw on it digitally or do linework in traditional way (pen with ink) and than work further on computer.
good luck

Hmm yea Aga I think I'll just use both, I'd love to learn oils anyway. Just don't really know where to start the learning process, it's pretty overwhelming, like every aspect in learning art, there are so many of em (anatomy, composition, light etc. etc.)..
I think combining medias could be fun indeed, never thought of that :P
Thanks for the help!

ok.... I use both
started in digital, picked up a brush and love it for plein air work and splashing around etc

how to start?
pick up a brush.....splorch out some paint. ...... go for it
attack
( I paint on primed black paper, or even un primed blalck paper, I seldom bother with canvas)

what I love is the organic qualities of the process....

I use both too...The same rules are applied in terms of anatomy, composition etc
So feel free to find your own way. It's just a long road full of work!
Try to pick something interresting from tutorials and life, and as chaosrocks said go for it.

A NOTE FROM THE DSG MOD:

I've noticed, and am rather distressed by, people referring to the DSG pics as "speedpaintings" or talking about how little time they've spent on an image. Although it is not expected that you spend 3 hours on an image, pleeeaase don't bother posting something that you've only put 15 minutes into. While these exercises are not meant to take an enormous amount of your day to do, they are not really meant to be exercises in speed either. Foremost, they are meant to be exercises in concept and content and few people successfully deliver a viable image in 15 minutes or so.

This is NOT meant to spur a discussion, so please don't reply to what I've just said. Just internalize what I've said and if you've been under erroneous assumptions about the DSG forum, consider putting forth higher quality or putting forth not at all.

Thanks guys!

:yayca:

[ Oh, and eternal sorries for the endless lag-times on my topic-postings. I promise I'll be concerting my efforts further. ]

Exploring musty dark dungeons isn't recommended by your doctor. Having your head slowly melted by the stomach juices of a rather large primitive life form isn't a very pleasent experience.

Coen - about oil painting:
I prefere using oils than acrilics. Oils, in my opinion, give more variety. With them you can make thick/fleshy structure and you can also make glaze. Oils dry quite long( longer than acrilics) and oils stink- not exactly oils but terpentine ( with oils you will use terpepentine rather often), so I don't recomend using them in your room. But if you have some another place, than oils are cool.(if you haven't, than acrilics would be better). There are third kind of paint available in shops - the oils, which you can use with water instead terpentine, but I haven,t got my opinion about them ;P
I prefere painting on canvas
For the beginning I recommend you to arrange a couple items on the desk in some range from easel and paint from life/nature, or you can go outside and draw some views.

the problem with water-soluble oils that I've heard of, and I may be totally wrong on this, was that no-one really knows yet how they're gonna hold up in the long term (50+ years). And that could even somewhat true with acrylics. of course for just practicing or sketching that's not really a problem, but it's something to consider.

Coen
July 10th, 2006, 12:03 PM
hmm I have to use it in my own room, so acrylics may be better then, that's the only paint I have now anyway, besides gouache which seems pretty nice for practicing too, alltho it blends alot.
For now I think I'll practice with acrylics, alltho sometimes it seems kinda frustrating it dries so fast, even on the brush when painting..

Aga, I will practice life painting, I think I'll start with one direct light or something, I think global lighting (think that's the right word) is way more difficult to paint, maybe I'm wrong. Thanks for the tips guys, very motivating :D
