this movie was probably one of the greatest visual achievements I've seen since Lord of the Rings

this movie rocks, the wheel thing was alittle ridulous, and I never really felt that much peril in any of the swordfighting, but man the monster stuff was wicked, and great lighting and sets

I have no time to see it. trying to hammer out my last man standing :(
taking a break so my eyes can focus again.

But from the trailers I've seen and such. This design is amazing

I saw his name in the end credits and pointed with a "Whee!" exclamation. My friends looked at me funny :(

But yeah, i liked the film. It was fun.

I saw it at the midnight premiere and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Much of the action was over-the-top as expected, but the visual effects and designs were absolutely fantastic. I think I missed a few plot points because I got so caught up in watching the cursed pirates just standing in the background.

The scenes with the Kraken were incredible as well. :)

Now that I think about it, upon seeing the trailer for the first time when Davy Jones came on screen, did anyone instantly think "Cthulhu?!" ;)

Very impressive movie....two thumbs up doesn't do justice for the animation, visual effects....hell... nearly everything. Hats off to those who worked on the film.

Argh, I was going to see it the 12th when it opens here, but my parents are dragging me to the other side of the country for two weeks now so I'll have to wait. But a movie with snazzy monsters, cutie boy Bloom and hottie man Depp in it? It'll be worth the wait, I think. :)

Paying rent comes first, but I'm psyched to see it when I can. I also thought the Cthulu thing, but then I ended up thinking, "He looks gosh darned neato!" Only maybe in not those words.

I wish I'd watched more Futurama so I'd have a snappy Zoidberg quote to follow this up with.

Oh, I know! "Good news everyone!"

Zoidberg was the old guy, right?

It seemed a little long but it was good none the less. I liked the action and visuals. I especially like the "throw back" they did to pirates 1 at the end of the movie. I dont know if I want a 3rd or not, I kinda like where the series is now.

Well of course a ninja wouldn't like a movie about pirates. They're natural enemies!

I just got back from seeing it and loved it! The creature design and effects were amazing. The only way I could tell most of the effects were CG was that it just would've been impossible to film in real life. Bill Nighy had a fantastic performance as Davy Jones.

My one complaint (that the ninja got right) is that I would've liked an actual ending. I know the next one is coming out soon, but they could've at least resolved something by the end of this one.

movie was baddass --- and indeed I loved Crash's monsters!! That man never fails me :] classic awesome critters he creates (Dreamcatcher, Jurassic Park, Pitch Black, etc, etc...)

though i wish the Kraken had a beak, rather than noobly-goobly trendy rings of teeth. 'cause i think Crash could've made that look very nice.

I enjoyed it as well. I started to find myself bored with the none-Davy-Jones scenes not because the other scenes were bad but because Davy Jones and the crew of the Flying Dutchman were just so darned cool. I felt like it was a good middle installment for the series. A little bit of the Empire Strikes Back, the good guys are not doing so well by the end, kind of feel. And Bill Nighy does a great job of bringing the amazing design and visfx to life. Very much looking forward to the 3rd. Hopefully we wont be disappointed.

very pretty, creatures were awesome- it's too bad the story didn't reach the caliber of the look of the movie.. rambling and unnecessarily convoluted, just confusing. Loooooong! Also, swordfights aren't exciting if you know that noone's gonna get hurt...

I'm satisfied that I got to see the special effects on a big screen, but I wish I could have fast forwarded a lot of the rest of the movie...

I did the same!! I was just gawking at the textures of these fishy buggers.
Davy jones was so expressive for a cg character, it was really fun just watching him talk. I especially thought it was awsome when the kraken put its tentacles inside the boat and you could here the "bump bump bump bump" of its tentacles gliding through the cannon hole. God I sound like jackie collins..

The next film has alot to live up to but with all these open options its gonna be awsome. Hope we see some new monsters to feest our eyes on too :D

How much of Davey Jones was Bill Nighy in makeup and how much was CG? There's no possible way that was 100% CG. The sub-surface-scattering on the octopus texture was too perfect. Please tell me that was just the most amazing anamatronics I've ever seen, because if you tell me it was all CG generated I'm going to be unable to believe you.

EDIT: P.S.

My reaction to the movie is that it is the "Empire Strikes Back" of the Pirates franchase. Not a stand-alone movie, but a very good segwey vehicle between two other movies (the third of course yet to be a movie per say).

Then it is the most perfect CG in the history of cinema. It is completely, totally 100% fully convincing.

it was 100 % ????????????? That's some crazy ass tracking then. I was also blown away by the designs of the Davy Jones crew. Did anyone else notice that short, hunched, nervous looking pirate that looked like a crustacean ?

Anyhoo, I'm prbably going to get he movie when it comes out in DVD and watch it frame by frame...

I was wondering who was playing Davy Jones and thought Robert Duvall with those eyes. Wrong ! :)

Recognized Bill Nighy the second he spoke. One of my favorite "bit"-actors. Steals the show almost every time.

Saw this article linked at CGTalk, so I thought I'd post it here. But it talks about the CG done for Davey Jones. :)

Disney Article (http://disney.go.com/inside/issues/stories/v060627.html)

Honestly my jaw fell off my head when I read how he's 100% CG. I was so convinced that most of what I was looking at was prosthetics combined with CG. ILM did a remarkable job with that character!

I was checking my watch about 45 minutes in, thinking "Is this movie STILL going on?"

I loved the first Pirates movie, and I heard gushing reviews from fans and ho-hum reviews from critics, so I went in with no expectations-- never have I seen a film that actually FAILED to meet my expectations when they were set at their worst.

I think I might've been able to tolerate it if I'd known that it was going to be a two-parter, because my main problem while watching it was the fact that it was SO LONG. That, and the fact that the first hour or so of the movie is just them taking jokes from PotC1 and re-hashing them to fit new situations. It was exactly I'd hoped NOT to see in this movie, but then again, it is Disney.

In other news: CG pirates are amazing. Extremely amazing. Made the movie for me they did, which is a good thing since I'll now be forced to sit through movie 3 to satisfy my damned curiosity.

Heh. Curiosity...

It would have been a great movie if it didn't ramble and drag on waaaaayyy too long. There were some funny gags by Depp, but not as funny as POTC 1. But it was worth seeing it just for Davy Jones, the kraken scenes were breath taking, and that part when Davy Jone's ship submerged underwater with the camera followed it through Davy Jone's pov. That was simply amazing.

DDDDDDDDude!!!!!!! just got back from seeing it and was i SHOCKED!!!!!!! it was FREAKING F**KING SMOKING FULL OF FREAKING AWESOMENESS!!!!

phew. sorry. had to get it off my chest. didn't feel right screaming that in the theatre.

my god was it cool. the f**king adventures that i wish i could have in real life! pirates. cannibals, witches, gigantic sea monsters & boatload of cool wet creature/monsters!!!! throw a couple of mermaids and i am freaking going! anyone who had doubt about this movie(like me) JUST GOOOOOOOO! Telling ya, best time i had at a movie since freaking King Kong!

Minor thing: i tend to LOVE long movies, LOTR2 was a perfect length for me. Harry Potter always seem too short. and i based a lot of my opinions purely on VISUALS!!! so take my advice with a grain of salt. anyways...Enjoy!!!!!

I had been reading lots of articles about the franchise, so the fact there's a 3rd wasn't news to me. It let me see all the crazy similarities to the Staw Wars trilogy. I won't spoil anything but off the top of my head I saw several parallel plot elements.
Part of this movie that made me like it (and made my cousin like it less :P ) was how serious things got. There was a clear sense of more being at stake than before, and everyone's playing for their own ends.
I can tell they've set up for a hell of a third act!

Biggest disappointment was how little screen time the Jones' crew got considering how many of them there were. I'll probably have to buy the inevitable art book.

Sofia Alexandra

Saw it today, and I'm jazzed! I want to see the third tomorrow, or better yet, tonight! Others have already praised the fantabulous visual effects, so I'll just speak of the "ordinary" visuals, from a purely feminine perspective: Depp is as hot as ever, Bloom is as cute as ever (though somehow a bit hotter this time) and now that Davenport's lost that silly wig he's pretty gropeworthy too. ;)

*SPOILER BELOW*

Most intense scene: Will getting whipped. Bloody hell, that was like, like, whoa! And not just because he got his shirt ripped off, there was something about that scene that got to me. Intense, really.

really good stuff, but i hated the fact that there was no resulting climax - admittedly its all left to the next film. But it had the perfect buildup and didnt deliver at the end, great pacing and everything.

Good stuff tho.

I hope, when the third one comes out, they do these showing at the theatres where they show all three movies in a row, like they did with LotR.
There are some hints about the third movie on IMDb, and if I understand it right it'll be the last movie. I really hope it is, it'd be blah if they went on for longer. Quit while you're ahead, innit?
