I am interested in finding a college that has a very good art program but is not exclusively an art college. You see, I plan to get a degree in either illustration or graphic design, as well as a degree in business administration. Does anyone know of a school that would offer both areas as quality programs? Just how much better is it to go to an art college than to just get an art degree at a normal university, if you are motivated to do well?

Also, in terms of illustration or graphic design, I'm leaning towards an illustration major because I seem to hear that you learn basic graphic design principles in illustration coursework, but do not learn about things needed in illustration in a graphic design major. I've also considered a industrial design degree since I'm planning to go into concept art at some point, but I think that illustration might be better for a wider education on art.

Thanks for all feedback

Consider Parsons in NYC, art college or not.
They have a Design Management major, in other words, the business side of the art/ design world.

Whoa whoa whoa... what is it in art you don't want to do? The only majors you left off were Animation, Fine Arts, Crafts, Photo and Interior Design practically!

While I'm all for you learning as much as you can, what do you expect to do with all of this accumulated knowledge once you get out of college? You seem to be skipping around with graphic design, illustration, industrial design, concept art AND business administration. Is there a role model or some ideal you're shooting for here??

All of these directions are connected in one form or another but they are all separate and distinct disciplines- each with its own unique focus. And trying to do all of them well could also dilute you as well. I'd say master one and compliment that with the other abilities. Not unless you plan on spending six to eight years in college are you going to be able to get all of these degrees.

Look inside and follow your gut for now. If you go into it and find out that one discipline isn't you, don't be afraid to jump ship and follow your heart again. Life isn't always so linear but don't be afraid to choose one and go with it.

Good luck with your choice.
