Very, very nice.
The foreshortening looks a little off on the left (his right) arm.
The gun and the face are fantastic.

that gun definitively rocks! except, being a Gatling Gun of sort, I can tell you that those ammo clips will empty in 1 second approximately. Better have a good aim!
I like the glasses too (nice idea)

Hey Dan, have you been getting a lot of traffic to your site lately? Your concept work for Resident Evil II (which kicks ass by the way) was mentioned on two different movie web sites: Creature Corner and Dark Horizons.

Hey wow! What's the movie about?
Dan Milligan
May 22nd, 2003, 08:58 AM
Thanks Guys,
MCM- no it's not Hellboy. It's a film in "development" It's got a great concept and storyline. Hopefully it'll make to production.
BB- Yeah, got a lot of traffic with the
RE2 pieces. The film and concept thing is something a just started to pursue. Its a little overwhelming.
Is it just me, why is it when ever I post something it look even sh*ttier than I first thought....

Nah, same here. I think digital art quality blemish with time. I swear. Pixels get lost, the colors fades, the poses change slightly, it's rather annoying, you gotta update constantly.
Seriously, though, I have the same problem. After looking at something for so long, you're not objective anymore. If you take some time off from the piece and come back, you'll start to see all those little mistakes or things you don't like popping out like zits on an adolescent's face (I like metaphores).
:googley:
But then again, I guess this is why one posts here, to get feedback and correct whatever can/should be corrected.

That's so cool you are involved in the whole process like that. Must be cool to see the upcoming films and to actually be a part of their creation! I can't relate to something looking bad when it gets posted...that's pretty much a constant for me...looks bad all the time hehe. But I know what you mean.

Wow. This is cool! That gun is gonna kick some arse! Love the way you rendered this pic (not keen on the face tho... dunno why... doesn't seem to fit).
Great work!
Awesome stuff on your site btw. Very inspiring.

Hey friends,
I can't say t much about the film right now-wouldn't be fair to the production company. I'll post more as I'm allowed.
Krayz, your right the face bugs me too-damn
MCM alway the modest one.

hey Dan looking good
i think the only thing that bothers me is the relationship between his hair, his goggles and his face--they dont fit perfectly--but i cant explain why--
anyhoo--love the style as always--you have that loose ability where every stroke has a purpose--hopefully ill learn that one day
more please--yummy

as an artwork, it looks way too rushed, but the colors are nice. i know that you got a bunch of them to do so I'll look at it for what it is for, a design concept. as far as that goes, i think it's pretty badass. Ya don't see that moustache anywhere anymore except the ol' spaghetti westerns, heh. I'd like to see more :D

veg- due to nature of the biz, often you get very little time work on an image. sometimes multiple drawings needed for the next day, thus the looseness. having said that I'm not making excuses for its shortcoming.
You've all motivated me to take another kick at this one Got some extra time, the script is gone into rewrite.
Not Punisher

Of course, even if I do have time I'll f*** around until I have no time, cause the only way to work is UNDER PRESSURE!
Nice one Dan. Waiting to see the rest, you lucky so-in-so.

I swear I saw that Marathon concept at your site on another pro artist's site.. I can't recall who, I thought I seen it at goodbrush.com - but did a search and I can't find it. Now I'm wondering who really did it.

I'm not quite sure what your getting at.
Are you saying someone has posted my drawing on their site? Or are you accusing me of such a crime.
Or are you confused about the premise of that exercise. recap: RE-design fav video character. The "Marathon" character was one I liked and choose to re-design. But he is still a futuristic soilder so there will some similarities to his orginal concept.
I would never present work that was not my own.

You're welcome. I hope it clears things up too.
I "hate" looking at Craing Mullins's Art, it keeps reminding me how much I suck by comparison. What I find the most amazing is his sketches: when small, they're almost photorealistic for he manages to get the lights and shadows almost perfectly, and when you take a look at the high-res, it's all really sketchy and I am in awe. I always spend so much time trying to make things look right, and he, with a few strokes, gets a better result than I can.
Pisses me off, but it's a good thing.

Thanks for coming back and clearing that up, I don't like when I see people "snipe" other people work with vague accusations and then vanish- I feel better.
And thanks to everyone for kickin' my ass and making me work harder. Unfortunetly I've got some other work on go right now but I'll make sure to post the progession.

Nice revision. Definitely more dynamic and a good lesson on how the something can always be improved on.
BTW, that guy's nose - I think I used that in a GM board once. My lawyers will be in touch.

im still around, ive been seeing the posts, i just didnt respond til now when i see the new revisements, so i havent vanished just to make sure if that was the case ^_^' anyways i like the newer stuff better as well. dont get me wrong i still like the static character design too, all the designs give details which one another doesn't. (i hope that made some sense -.-) i wish you kept the moustache but either way it looks ok. im glad i helped motivate ya :) can't wait to see more!

looking much better D
i think his arms could use a little more detail/definition and his eyes could be more powerful/detail/definition/highlights/etcetc
(his eyes could tell alot about his personality)
i may be ignorant about pure conept work but i also think the hair could be more refined as well as the goggles
it feels great as a base for an illustration---but for a concept i think it needs to be tighter so theres no room for "interpretation" on anything
again im not sure how this process works in the film industry--maybe they want to see a first pass before they ask for a tighter rendering--

Hey TV
Thanks for the commments its not finished yet thats why i had it moved to Work In Progress. As far as film concept work goes, in this case my drawing are used as merely "eye candy" for the production company to shop the screen play around looking for money. More mood than detail because the film is in infant stages. I going to keep refining it though-trying to learn something here.
Thanks again TV all valid pionts.

dan, i plainly love it!!!! absolutely fantastic. i always wonder how it happens that somebody who is capable producing something as great as the latest sketch can ever come up with sth. that looks like the first one you posted? is it just you pros have a bad day or what? i dont get it. can you tell me ?
edit: i do in no way mean to insult you or your work. i'm just curious how this difference in quality occurs. the rendering is also very nice on the first one, maybe it's only the pose/mood?

thanks everyone,
_retro regarding your question of quality control. No real excuses here. Because of the insane deadlines I get sometimes, I have to go with the "good enough" factor. Often my main goal is to deliver something to my clients on time and the quality takes a backseat. Saying that, i'm still capable of producing sh*t for no good reason. I post things here so you guys can push me and stop me from being lazy.

Can't wait to see this one done. My favorite part of the drawing is the legs and feet....They feel really natural and have a lot of energy to them. Great stuff! Depending how far you are going to go with it... I'd like to see the gun blast look hot and maybe have some of that refected on him.

This thing is old.. but since it was brought up I have to ask- What's with the pose on the last one? It looks funny to me. is feet positioning I mean. The right (his left I think) leg seems just off. Even if he is in the air. :\
