Generally a 2.5 GPA is good enough to get in (some schools will also take you conditionally) and a portfolio generally consists of 10-15 of your best pieces. In that portfolio, you should demonstrate an ability to draw from life, some observational drawing, figure work and some tonal and color work if you've got it. If you can incorporate some graphic design in all of this, that's fine too.
I'd also suggest sending in a digital portfolio as opposed to original artwork as well- just on the odd chance the pieces can get ruined or misplaced.
Again, these are all generalities. Check with the individual schools that you're interested in and see what other criteria they're looking for.
Simple enough??

At the Academy of Art in SF, there is no portfolio review to get in. However, if your skill level is good and you want to bypass certain foundation courses, you will need a portfolio for the dept director.
I've never been to Art institute, so I can't tell you which is better. Just know exactly what you want and see who can give you what you want.
Good luck!

Honestly, getting into an art school isn't much of an isue if your portfolio and GPA are even halfway decent. Where a killer portfolio, good GPA and high test scores make a difference is in scholarships. Schools want good, successful, motivated students and will compete for them. Strong students who do good work are good for business.
