View Full Version : DSG 1088: Sci-Fi: CHILD LOOKS UP AT BE-LIGHTED UNDERBELLY OF TOWERING 3m ROBOT

William b. Hand
June 29th, 2006, 05:45 PM
[ The child is directly beneath the robot... ]

[ The mechanical underside is covered with lights and cameras and such. ]

[ So... ]

[ The lighting should be fairly dramatic... ]

[ Imagine that it's night-time and that the background and/or foreground is probably rather dark, whilst the subjects are illuminated starkly. ]

[ Sorry for the extra long delay on this... ]

Ling: Thanks for the comp :)

klys: That's great for being only pencil, I've always had issues when I use pencil of creating contrast and focal points in composistions, but you have done well on both.

Costly: I love this, I love the colouring style, The whole image reminds my of the very stylized cartoons that came out during the 50's ...Tom and Jerry with all the funky music etc...excellent. The lines could be a little cleaner to match that sorta style...but hay..I like messy line work also hehe

Demiurgic: Quite a mesmerising image and as an image it's very good...but it seams a little lacking in the robot factor...If I had not known the topic I'd never have guessed there was a robot i the image anywhere. However...still a pleasing or disturbing image...not sure which..I think that's why I like it.

Yea I realized that too, I was attempting to show it with the legs that are visible(if they look like legs anyways lol), but the angle I had started it with was makig it hard to do. With more time I might change it entirely. Alot of times I will do that with DSGs, start the pic and it ends up losing something because I am focusing else where or whatever. I try to fit it in as best since of course, it is the topic, but sometimes I am happy with it having given me the particular image I do come up with. Thank you Vanvalen, I'm glad you did like it too.

Vanvalen: Nice! Looks like a walking barber shop.

Edit: Added glossyness, or so I hope. I usually don't do advanced lighting and reflection work, so critique is welcome.

Just standing there on the beach, without moving, and with no markings. Adults think it's artistic, something to keep away from or something to ignore. Only a child is curious enough to approach.

messed about with different ideas on this for a while, wanted to do something more 3/4 view over the robot's shoulder but couldn't get it looking right so i simplified it down to this...

mashroh - nice picture, nice to look at
and what I like in your works, in generall, are the simple resolutions, the quick way how you do some elements. Despite they are done quick, they work well.

Lingmerth- I like the first one and the second.
You draw the figures naturally, the poses are correct
Two things to your consideration : maybe the robot from the second is more similar to human than to the robot
and it could be good if you draw the dark background on the whole upper area ( not only around the robot) - I would do so ;)

Costly- nice, both the sketch and the coloured wersion

Hey Blinky,

Thought my robot felt sorta familiar -- had been googling to familiarise myself with the species and there was something about the robocop baddie-bot that stuck in my head. It's a pretty generic shape innit.

Aw, hell, I'll do another one....
cheers then

darkrain: blending modes are one thing. and filters are another. in all honesty, id suggest staying away from both for awhile. learn how to paint the look of that stuff yourself. cause itll be all that much more REAL when you do it, plus youll learn so much more then just relying on that computer code which always looks too artifical. also, no lens flares... ever again okay? lens flares arent ALWAYS bad, but about 90% of the time they are unless youre a seasoned pro and know how to properly use em. and very few pro's use them, they make their own typically

but its looking not too bad rain, keep working at it. youre good enough to be on here as is anyone really. this is a great place to learn, be you good or bad. so dont give up

Really like the subject so here's my first DSG contribution...

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/2999/kidwithrobot17la.jpg

Done in Photoshop in around 1 hour. It was intended to be an old broken robot being looked at by a curious kid, but I ran into some problems (I'm relatively new to digital art) so I switched the concept a bit. I think it turned out alright, has sortof a "The Iron Giant" feel to it. Pardon the messy lines and overlapping greys on the right arm, this was more a learning project for me then an attempt to make a polished picture :) Silentbrain, I envy your grayscale abilities, hehe.

edit: slightly adjusted the values to make it a bit darker.

I think I'm a little late on this one... It's the latest one, though. I think that makes it fair game.

I've been looking through these forums for ages. First time I've posted is here. Figure this is a good place to start. I've done a lot of quickie DSG pictures but never had any guts to put any up, y'know? Ah, well.

Here I go tryin' to hang with the pros, aye? With my 20-year-old wannabe child and his big eyes. Wooooo. First time trying to draw a robot of any kind. Gotta get the hang of the Shiney effects. And colour. I keep trying to do colour. Haha.
