View Full Version : SSG 27 - The Legacy of Sketching
Darktwin
June 28th, 2006, 02:14 PM
All right boys and girls, this is our SSG thread, lets try to keep her updated. It doesn't have to be updated daily, but lets try to keep her afloat shall we? Since I'm starting this little party, I'll be first to post some stuff I'm been putting down on paper recently as of yesterday.
I've seen some artist on this site do really cool silhouette thumbnails for ideas, because the silhouette is all about reading basic shapes and how they work together to create a unique or interesting concept. Now before doing these I really thought it was going to be easy. Damn I was wrong, they can be really challenging especially for me because I have a bad habbit of drawing the same designs over and over so I really had to push myself to try different ideas, especially when I didn't like where the inital design was going. But the cool thing about using marker is it makes it easy to block in masses and make changes quickly.
Another thing: it didn't seem like it would take very long to fill a page, WRONG AGAIN, the time really ticks by when your engrossed in a creature design, thinking about "what if I try this with the torso, maybe the legs should be inverse, or bent back" So with these thumbnails I was working on creature/alien designs, trying to create different and unique shapes that might inspire me to draw some interesting creatures. So far I'm happy with the progress, A lot of them turned out ok, a lot really bad, but I had a lot of fun doing them.
I would like to get some feedback from the SSG and CA members alike letting me know which ones you like and if you don't like any, ones you hate the most and why? Or both if you want. I've numbered most of them so let me have it. Thanks for viewing everyone.
Draw until your fingers bleed!!!!

Hmmm, looking pretty good in here, and intimidating as well. Ah well, more motivation for improvement, the way I see it. I just found out about this here group SB, so I figured I'd contribute. *edit* Anyone want to give out the new sig code? can't seem to figure out had to add the group's SB link.... so much for that high school html clas way back when...
Dile- Love the gas mask, my only thought is; it seemed that the eyes "raised" more in the pencil version. Still rocks though! And 20 mins for the whole body shot? Man I need to get faster.
Wolfbane- You seriously make me want to cry... What can I say, awsome stuff. Your warmup stuff puts some of my best to shame...
Darktwin- I like #3 on page 1 and the two unumbered beasties at the bottom left and right of page 2. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but #1 on page 1 the legs don't match up on size. They're all interesting though. Leaves alot to the imagination, gives me some ideas, heh.
And now for my stuff. I'm just posting my update to my sketch book for today. First a little background. I've been drawing for a while now, but just got serious about it a few months ago. Problem is, before this time I wasn't drawing very consitently, and I was just coping others' drawing (not tracing, copying). I got pretty good at this, but when it comes to original stuff... Anyway, I think my main problem is a lack of confidence when drawing my own stuff. When I look at a picture, I know I can draw it, but stuff from life...
Oh well, thats what pratice is for I assume.
Now, I spent about 10-15 mins per image, execpt the bottom right. Wasn't paying to much attention to the clock by then.

Derram: Seriously, put away the anime for now in order to improve.
get the Loomis books or whatever resources/books you can get, check the
library for example! You have pretty confident lines wich does not deserve your
silly anime, sorry.. Anime can look good, but only if its managed right, and
based on the "rules" body structure and so on! You should
check out SINIX here on the forum to see someone who pull this style off well!
Keep it up man! Hope to see alot more from you!

You all are so fast.
Darktwin very nice idea with those silhouette thumbnails.I should try some.Do you have a clear idea when you start doing one or does it came afterwards.
And you may all do the same excercise for example to be able to compare your results. But this is just an idea :)

i love that the group is really enthused about the new thread, and i promise to contribute shortly, but i have a concern which i would like to discuss with the rest of "The Legacy"...
I'm currently a student at the Art Institute of California Orange County, more of a trade school, than fine arts, and this has conditioned me in a certain way.
At AI we're expected to take some pretty harsh crits, and not be all beat up. It's expected of students and faculty to be respectful, and mindful of each other's feelings about our work, but there is a certain understanding when it comes to critiquing.
As aspiring(breathing) artists, we should strive to always become better, as we better our selves. That being said, AS LONG AS ITS CONSTRUCTIVE AND OBJECTIVE HARSH CRITS SHOULD BE WELCOMED.
I personally think, that the more a crit scares you, the better. I would like to extend a welcome to anyone willing to be honest and as thorough as possible in their crits of my work.
That being said, I thank anybody who has taken the time to read this LONG ass rant...hahaha...

Heartbeat: For me I try to have a loose idea in my head before I put the marker down, is the creature going to be 2 legged or 4 legged, low to the ground, or standing upright in natural posture, ectomorphic(skinny build) or large framed? With all these things running through my head I also let the maker take control trying to things I might not like intially.
Derram: hey Derram good start, Interesting anime style, Anime style is kind of limiting but there are a lot of artist out there who have interepreted they're own style with and have been damn successful. So skys the limit man. Keep drawing
its really awesome to see what shapes you guys like, because I know we all are seeing different creatures out of the silouettes.
Dile: Really cool to see you drawing with the pencils also, remember that the tablet is a tool like the pencil, its good to develop both, but I believe the pencil definitly helps with the foundations more. think of the tablet as icing on the cake. Looking good man.
Wolfbane: Nice creature design , nice solid beast. The last piece you did it looks like smoke rising in the sky, or dark clouds. pretty intersting.
i love that the group is really enthused about the new thread, and i promise to contribute shortly, but i have a concern which i would like to discuss with the rest of "The Legacy"...

I'm a student also, at AAU in San Fran, I couldn't agree with you more about being constructive when it comes to critiquing each others work. I think the members of CA in general is good about being honest and constructive with each other. The more honest you are with me, the better. Let me have it if you will. Thanks for taking the time to express how you feel. Look forward to seeing everyones work ^^.

Constructive critiques good! Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I know how much I suck. I'm just concerned with making my current piece better then the last. Hopefully, I'm acutually accomplishing that.
More practice and another self portrait, still dosen't look like me though... I'm guessing the eyes are a bit to big.

In addition, your helmet thing, try using either a softer brush or something to take the circles off your nice shiney surface. and u will want to shape the highlight on a round object like that one. Here is a rough structure drawing before I add value. structure is the key to getting believeable looking faces. Angle of the face and portions are key. here is an example mentler posted in his exclusive sb. Read post number 2, check it out, great info

After the structure was laid out, It took about a good hour for me to due the value. I used a b and 3b pencil when rendering this piece out. I accidently drew this study in my rougher grade sb, so I didn't blend because it tends to smear, but I like the effect of straight pencil without the blending every now and again.
