more doodles and stuff

June 26th, 2006, 06:59 PM
just some more stuff, my current sketch book doesn't scan well, the paper is kinda waxy I guess, and when I hold the pages up to the light I can see through them, and the pages seem to throw away like 60 percent of the graphite I put on them so I need to get a new sketch book with better heavier/thicker paper.

and the fact that my sketchbook takes a beating didn't help these scans either...haha. so sorry for the messy scans.

Liam Neeson's head, some dude on a camel, and a lil girl and a robot. I might throw some color on the little girl and the robot but I can't paint to save my life so it will probably look horrific afterwards.

and I threw up my final for the life drawing class I took last semester. It's a master study of one of Michelangelo's works. I wanted to do one of Frazetta's paintings but my teacher didn't consider him a master :nohope: to each his own I guess.

so from here on out everything I toss into this thread will be hot off the press, but I just figured I would get the ball rolling with some of my recent stuff.

the latest batch of stuff, the heads are from reference. That's about it, summer school is in full swing for me so it's gobbling up the majority of my time, but I think I'm about to start drawing in my classes :nohope: haha, more to come soon.

hey thanks for the feedback guys,

I was watching a Scott Robertson DVD and he talked about how to create landscapes and scenes from abstract shapes, and I got so inspired I ran off and did some speed paints.

I am challenged when it comes to color/painting.....and you could even say that I'm somewhat afraid of color which is why most of my stuff is just pencils.....haha, so these doodles were a struggle.

It's nice to see you finaly finish a paint my friend. Overall I like it. A great first finished illustration. I think the folds could be pushed a littler more, they don't have much highlight so they are hard to read. Good job man. Keep em comin!

Looking good Johny, like that last update. Its painted very well and shows some good form. My only thing with it is that you could probably do something else with the background, darkening it, adding some more texture, to make the face pop more, right now it is starting to blend in some with the bg.

But overall good work, keep it up....

drew a sketch of a generic soldier in a helmet, but when I started to paint this thing I guess the Christmas spirit caught me. I started to think about what Soldiers that guard santa at the north pole might look like haha.

Mr. Fife

That soldier is probably the best paint I have seen out of you. Honestly I want to see more folds though he is wearing baggy pants and a baggy shirt and you sort of faked the folds instead of painting them in. Overall though man great job. Lets see some updates!!!!!!

p.s. Painter Indeed rawks. I been using it all week and I am really starting to like it.

worked on this for a while - too long in fact. I wanted to do something with a little or no local color. Lots of craftsmanship issues in this thing though, gotta concentrate on being neater. learned a great deal from this thing, Anyway on to something new.

Good work Johny!

I would say overall though that your main goal for this piece is what is holding it back...
I think some integration of some subtle local colors would help break up the piece and add some contrast to the brightness of the blue.

But overall nice work, i like the way the key is rendered...

keep it up

3 characters, I was kinda of playing around with the idea of designing individual members of the 40 thieves when I did them. Also some anatomy studies from John Watkiss's book.

mr. 5,
i think too much line work is showing. It looks more like a color wash than anything, spend the extra few hours and do a nice painting. The pencils are nice, but ur not gonna get over ur enviro painting phobia unless you spend the time painting them. Don't be afraid of it man. Just push it to the next level. Cause right now I don't yet see this in the finaly finished section, it looks more like a first itteration

The piece is looking good so far, but I would have to agree with the solo man, I think it is still not quite finally finished material.

A couple critiques aside from what has already been side.
-If you squint your eyes, almost the whole piece just blends in with itself. All the values are basicall the same. The only thing moving your eye around the piece is the high-lights on the helmet and tanks.

-Too much repetiton of the tanks, the number of them is ok, but how you painted in the highlight basically the same on all 3, just makes it un-interesting. Also how they are all positioned the same, up against the houses, cannon point upwards.

-lack of background...just add anything to bring the viewers eyes back into the piece and not, question "why does it just stop"? Because now all your lines are directing the eye right to the vanishing point and keeping it there, have some lines that go the opposite way and break it up a bit.

-lack of humans, even if this was the end of the war, there would still be soliders around, looking for dead, etc...Even if they are just silhouettes, they will add just that much more.

I think you can have a kick-ass piece if you just spend a bit more time working in the details that really will sell the overall environment

keep it up man!

finally got around to taking a picture of this, it's a still life I was working on in class, some parts are more finished than others but I only had so much time to work on it, and that's the way it goes.

damn your thread makes me realize i need to step it up. Keep going you are almost at two pages.

Johny 5
May 18th, 2007, 09:08 AM
both the paintings are Works in progress, the spear guy vs. female snakes is near completion, and I just started the two detectives one. The detectives one is sorta inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. Iv'e been listening to his books, in audio format of course who has time to read a book haha.

The detectives piece is nowhere near finished but I figured I'd show it early just because I normally only show either finsihed or almost finished paintings.

the last 3 pieces are just pages out of my sketchbook. I recently realized that I have a thing for the circus and vaudville entertainers and I have no idea why, Iv'e never even been to the circus haha. :yayca:

as always c & c welcome and appreciated.

Hey my. 5, I like when you update my friend, It is always a treat because you never know when it is going to happen lol. Anyway, to the crits. On your dectective character the arms seem to be of different proportions I am really not buy the raised arm. On all your paints it seems like you depend on your linework to carry it once it is finished. Try painting out all that stuff and giving a more realistic painted feel. I know its hard, because you can start losing all the crispness if you are not careful. But be bold, its the only way to push through. THe spear piece with the snake women have given you a lot of grief I know, and I have more to sya on it unforunatly. There is nothing going on on the left side of the piece, furthermore the spear is pointg to the left drawing my eye into emptyness and off the page. I think you need to re-think some of your compostional elements.

Ok, I havent posted on here in ages. But your work is pretty awesome and has a lot of potential. For being afraid of colors, they seem to like you. One of my favorites that you painted was the chick blowing out the rainbow birds. But there is one underlying critique on almost everything you have done from imagination. I don't know if you do gesture drawing before you paint. But if you do they seem to get lost. The poses seem to be forced, stiff, and uncomfortable. If you loosened up your poses a bit, you'd be unstoppable. But the Red and White studies from the book are amazing.

Hey, really enjoy the pencil work. Have you done any more of the thieves I really liked thoughts?

Johny 5
July 16th, 2007, 05:10 PM
ShamrockSpecial - I shall be on the look out for stiffness in my poses. appreciate the c&c

jelle, designboot - thanks guys

dextermcspice - at some point I plan to sit down and design a whole bunch of the forty thieves, and one day when I am a much better artist I'd like to do a graphic novel dealing with the forty thieves/sinbad etc, just kinda taking the coolest parts of the stories in Arabian Nights and mashing them together.

anyway here are some sketches from my sketch book n other junk. The gun to the head pic and the, chick strangling the cyclops are old pieces, but I figured If I don't show them now they would remain in the abandoned work archive forever, and that is a sad fate for any drawing so up they go.

oh and would you date a woman who could choke a cyclops to death? :$.....hahaha

hey Jon, thanks for a taking a look, I will slowly post whatever overtime, I heard good news about you winning a scholarship for Watts. Thats insane, and awesome to be able to do that, and good luck.
I left AI before finishing, I realized its not what I want to do. but art will stay an intrest.
I have to say that your digital painting and drawing is pretty insane and humbling. The materials in the still life feel like what they are. And the values and tones in your more drawings are readable and organic. Take care, jon.

the first piece is a master study and my first oil painting eva. The life drawing Pieces are some of my better stuff from this semester, I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of drawing the figure, the heads were about 1 hour poses and the other stuff is like 40 minutes tops. The space ship piece is a wip of a children book illustration that I'm working on for my illustration class. The stuff from my sketch book is just random whatevers done mostly during geography class.
