love-bird life drawings

a friend of mine and i just had a short life drawing session with his two love-birds.
we both were working with ink and brush (was his first try at ink/brush).
it was quite a hard time as the two suckers were damn hard to spot in certain poses. they're flying free in his room, that didn't make it easier, too. :)
on the other hand, WHEN we were able to spot a clear pose for sketching away, it was always the same. :(

he promised me that he'll register here and post his attempts, too.

- no. 1 - tiny sketches. every bird is about 1-2 inches -

- one inbetween bird. i started warming up with my brush and became more confident with the birds' shape. size: ~3-4" -

all were done with a #2 synthetic bristle brush.

a lil' cockroach. pencil and overworked with pigment inkpens 0.2mm, 0.5mm and 0.7mm. not from life, of course :)

yeah great fun.. this fuckin birds wont sit still, or as geki said always idle in the same pose on their branch :D

well as geki already said it was my first try with ink&brush. i'm better with pencil atm so i made some pencil ones just some minutes ago.

i see you and geki have much more practise on using ink&brush. keep on drawing, they're fine.

gekitsu - very stylized (?) and Asian looking approach - but well done!

ACID - I'm also struggling with these pen-brushes, just keep practising (as I will).

I don't have a inkbrush yet! It's a simple pen and a black marker!
I plan to get that Kamey brush El Coro was talking about - but first I have to learn to draw. :D
The parrot is called "wave bird"? Maybe becouse it flies so desperately in waves? ;)

Great work,truthfuly when I read bird drawings I was like ...what? I the drawings are pretty intersting I like the shape of the bird. so I to will draw birds , or give it a try.

wow, loads of replies :D

oblio: i especially like the second one you posted. it's looking so spontaneously in the drawing... some scribbly fine lines and some blotches of black in the tail.
i didn't post my very first attempts... i had lots of trouble finding into the birds' shape, proportions and such...
i don't do very much life drawing, too. because i can't find a decent life drawing course around here :(
so i have to sketch people in my lunch break (30 minutes... and i have to eat) or draw pets.
i also plan about getting a brush pen, oblio. brushes are so much more responsive (word?) than pens, pigment inkpens and such... but one can't sketch away in the lunch break with a brush :)
i plan on getting a cheaper one first and try to work with that as long as i reach the point i can say it's the material that is hindering progress. then, i'll head for the kaimei :)

re "wave bird" i always thought it was because of that wavey pattern the males have on their heads?

birgit: it wasn't a brush pen used... a poopy normal default brush. even a cheap synthetic brand.
davinci nova synthetics series 1570 size 2 if you want to know. it's 2.25€
i still prefer these over kolinsky wich in my opinion is overpriced and hair does split after a while. i like synth handling better, too.

elwood: all i can say about bird draings is to browse coro's sketchbook posts in the sketchbook forum. there he has one absolutely great bird painting. look at this, it's stunning!

Your talking about that $60,- one right?

If I were you Id start out simple and cheaper....
Personally I use a black Pentel Color Brush, it looks exactly like that cheaper one in El Coro's demo.... You can do real thick and real thin lines with it.... That is when you got used to the way a brush "works"....

I'm gonna get me one of those $60,- ones to anytime soon though;) :D ....

@gekitsu: wave bird is because of the lines on their heads and wings.. right, but all do have these lines, except the ones who have another feather color.. there are completely white birds without any wave-lines on em.

you thought males only have theses lines because my female bird doesnt have them ;)

The Pentel brush I was talking about is simply called "Pentel Color Brush" (Number 101, black.).

I tried looking for it on the Pentel homepage www.pentel.com , but apareantly it is a product of their Japanese devision, and their Japanese homepage is in eh.... Japanese:D ....

gekitsu - I also got the Pentel ink brushes. My mum ordered them from Tube, Düsseldorf (they don't have a web address but I can PM you the address if you want, they've also got reasonably priced sketchbooks and Bristol pads) and I think Boesner has them, too.
