Well it isnt much at the moment but ill slowly post up allsorts.
Top page of scribbles is done on a piece of animation paper, just slightly lager than an A4 size...pencil.probably a few hours there..As you can see my knowledge of anatomy is shocking..lol,but i always try to make them appear believable.

until i gather more crap, heres some older sketches.

cheers...
Recently ive been locked onto the book`portrait of a killer` by Patrica Cornwell that proves the artist Walter Sickert was the infamous Jack the ripper..very interesting read.

Tha top sketch is a quick 20 min sketch i did of a Sickert photo with a shaven head.,bottom one is a random sketch, i applied a few Sickerts features into it.

HB pencil and A4.

Love the sketches man, you have a definite style of render that I've never seen before.

Never read that book but didn't realize anything had been proven about him... how exactly does it prove it?

bad ass sketches rusty. i like the expressions you give some of your characters. i was just curious if you have any 'finished' drawings somewhere?

nother sketch...this one i did on the 40-50 min busride home..proportions r all out of wack, but what the hell...pencil.

thx all ;)..
as wierd as this sounds Rude corleone,i dont think ive ever done a finished FINISHED drawing,i think its mainly to do with my short attention span..lol
I can only ever stay on a drawing for little over an hour,2 max,b4 i get tired of it then shift onto another idea..thats unless im getting payed for it,thats intirely different..;)

Coma, theres way to much for me to write up about that book, but its very intruging, should have a look 4 it..
thanks about the comment too,i hate it when people say stuff like "your drawings remind me of so and so`s drawings!!"..yer comment made my day.:)

Really fine stuff. I could see some of Lukias´ influences and maybe some Simon Bisley ;).

I think your strength are really the faces (the rest ist good, too - don´t understand me wrong). You´ve got a very good capability to capture emotions.

Nice stuff!

this is getting even better rusty !!!!

may i ask a question, how do you achieve your smooth shading (the smooth and smoky greys), do you use some smudge stick ? and on what kind of paper are you srawing those ?

i realy love your subtle greys, but they dont seem to be very close little hatches, more smudged areas maybe, and im wondering how do you achieve it :)

http://web.1asphost.com/rusty23/DSB/FACE.JPG

cheers..this one here is my first corel Painter painting, all improvised ,no refs..around 30 mins.

thx Fipse and Metaphysiks..yeah ,i like drawing faces since nearly every emotion is expressed through it,and because my anatomy sucks..lol..i really need to study more anatomy..

Mime-yeah i use blending stumps because they save alot of time,..sometimes combine hatching with a blending stump, its a great tool even though all it is is just a piece of rolled up paper.lol..

When using blending stumps, use them more like a pencil rather than just blending .load the tip with graphite/charcoal then block out your shadows an work it up from there,..yo can only do so much with it though so be weary of that,it just takes alot of experimenting..

Paper,i just use your standard A4 size paper that gets used in printers/photocopyers,dont really like sketching in sketchbooks...animation paper i use as well, its the same paper but just a tad larger than A4..

oooo i can see all your stuff now, and its really damn good. everything is really on point.. minus a few anatomy problems. the painter stetch looks good, especially for a first try. the values and such could be taken further, but im sure youll catch on to it really quick. i dont have much else to say other than your shites amazing. keep it up

Rusty
June 17th, 2003, 07:39 AM
Ive been so busy with work lately,i just couldnt be stuffed to do any drawing. After much struggling to pick up a pen i managed to do this a small step by step process
of how i work with pens/markers...still a bit newbiesh with prismas and pens, more of a pencil sketcher myself.

If atleast someone picks sumthin up from this then ill be happy :)...The whole drawing is improvised,no refs, and took just over an hour to do..A4 size paper.

=============STEP ONE================
first line out the drawing with a light 10-20% grey, then with a 40% grey,...keep it rough, use this stage to get your proportions right..After i finished this drawing i saw i screwed
up on the arm lengths didnt even see it until i had finished inking..grrr,yer fired Rusty.....of course it would help to do a sketch in pencil first ,then trace over on another peice of paper..whatever.

http://web.1asphost.com/rusty23/SBS-1/Step%201.jpg

=============STEP TWO===============
then start to build up some shadows and make smaller details clearer with a 60% grey, tight but loose lines, not as roughed out as the first stage.

http://web.1asphost.com/rusty23/SBS-1/Step%202.jpg

=============STEP THREE==============
This is the stage where your drawing really takes shape, just try not to rush to this stage to fast or youll completely fuck up your drawing..Take your time planning it and itll turn out sweet.
Let it dry then go over with pen..Ive always prefered Ballpoint pen over technical/ink pens cause i like to lightly feather details down, technical pens give you a real crisp clean line
but cant lightly feather up lines like a ballboint.....ah well, its up to you.try mixing the 2.

http://web.1asphost.com/rusty23/SBS-1/Step%203.jpg

After that i guess some photoshop would be nice, but i screwed this one up during the inking stage so ive
lost hope in it..lol..maybe later ill colour it.

C & C wellcome.

Thanks for the comments guys,i seriously feel like my art is dropping lately, just overworked i guess,no real drive to draw at this time.

http://web.1asphost.com/rusty23/DSB/Head%20sketches-1.jpg

Markers/ballpoint pen and colour pencils on the chicks head which came out a real crappy resolution when i scanned it for some reason...no more than 10 minutes on the head sketches except 4 the chick i prolly spent around 30 mins drawing/colouring her....slightly larger than actual size.

Thanx Hunger_artist...
todays stuff..

Top right is a sketch i based on a goth chick i saw in the city a few dayz back..i remembered her hair was really messy, but it
was her eyes i remembered the most, pitch black on real white whites..tryed to capture her intense look with that one..

bottom one was a sketch i did on the bus of an indian woman who was taking a nap across from me..unfortunatly she got of the bus
b4 i was halfway through,so i made alot of it up.

figure with cloth wrapped around is partly photo ref..mainly just to get my shadows right.

grey/brown A4 size paper ,markers,white pencil and ballpoint pen,...Still experimenting,probably an hour,hour an a bit worth there

Man, I really dig the expression on the last one - the face in the upper right. Nice sketches, Rusty.

But... Walter Sickert was not Jack The Ripper. Cornwell, is only selling books. She's not an investigator. Read this: click (http://www.casebook.org/dissertations/dst-pamandsickert.html)

Thx buffaloe and blind...My knowledge of anatomy isnt that good, mostly just make it up,but im glad you liked them..Im slowly keying the muscle structure into my brain..

have you read that book Blind?...She isnt green when it comes to crimes/murderers,shes knows all about that shit. She has put a good well researched theory out,but i do see where that article is coming from..

I see a lot of Bill Sienkewitz(?) in there. He used to do New Mutants and he did the Elektra mini-series. Is there any accuracy to that? I love your pencil work man, lots of great lines and emotion in there.

quick 15 min sketch i did on the bus..markers,ballpoint & pencil on toned paper..

I know exactly who your talking about Irate,as much as i do like Sienkewitz work(specially his coloured stuff)i wouldnt call him a major influence....My main influences, even though my style dosent resemble their`s is Travis charest and Dale keowns work on "Pitt"...huge inspiration whenever i flip through pages filled of their artwork..

have you read that book Blind?...She isnt green when it comes to crimes/murderers,shes knows all about that shit. She has put a good well researched theory out,but i do see where that article is coming from..

Heh... nah, I never read any of her stuff, and I'm sure she does know her way around the murder scene, and I bet she's quite the writer to boot... she's certainly very successful. So, I am speaking from ignorance there... but I have done some reading on the Ripper Murders. The Sickert thing is a great theory, but with some holes. I think it might well be unsolvable at this point.

To get back OT: that last image is pretty damn cool, too. What kind of paper are you using there?

Back to graphite with these, done on a piece of animation paper straight from my imagination.around an hours worth there.

Thx for the feedback, its kinda 50/50 marker an white pencil to get my shading Buffaloe,Im still stuck on how to use markers properly.

Not quite sure what brand of paper it is Blind,I grabbed it in the Stationary shop, isnt fancy stuff, cost like 10 or so bucks for 20 A4 size pieces...has this nice grain to it why i got it..:)

thx metaphysiks/metawinds....yeah,ah well thats the way it goes in the industry,..people who have the money accually think that shitty ideas like "muffin the talking cardboard box" is what kids want to watch..lol.

Damn man I love your take on realism, your animation style blended with your new realistic direction is madness!
eg that little blue sketch, thats pure dope. Feck, I get nervous just thinking about the works that'll come out of those reeky tar fingers of yours(speaking of smoking, I quit cold turkey back in 01 and started again once I hit Europe.. filthy shit.. I promised myself to quit once I get settled again).
I really needed this update, its like I can't sketch any more without seeing someone elses juicy eye candy.

argh rusty, very very nice. beautiful. i was going to enter thunderdome until now, thanks. anyway, i really like this, as usual you bring it in full force. part of me wants to see what his other hand is doing but it doesnt bother me that much. about your animations, i would be honored to see them, i will have extra shorts ready. and speaking of animation and seeing your drawing i was wondering if by any chance you have ever played one of the greatest games ever by the name of Mark of Kri. this reminds me of that masterpiece and as an animator you would appreciate it even more. if you havent played it then you really should, i think it would provide some nice inspiration. sorry about the rambling, maybe when you are done winning thunderdome we can collab on something, i think i could learn alot from you. pm me if you are interested in talkin.

Ah,i was way to bogged down with work to attempt Thunderdome as i wouldve liked to,so this will be more of a picture ill finish bit by bit...
Nowhere near finshed as you can see, last day was today, stink man..i think this needs a good 2 dayz of constant work to get it finished.

metaphysiks, yah next thunderdome ill be ready since i only decided to enter when i wondered in there about 10 or so dayz back,im keeping my eye on that forum now..
Yah ive play Mark of Kri,yeah man i love the 2d elements of that game,..however that game was not recieved well by hardcore maori traditionalists over here ,because tha maori content in the game was way to stylized,..4 example the moko(facial tatoos)has very deep meaning to it,every line has a purpose, place,an history to it,i think it was taken as an insult when the developers of MOK just created squiggly patterns all over the face...I kindve agree, but then i dont..im half half..lol
Yah man,a colab in the near future would be nice my man ;)..

Thanx Xia and AmadorL,cheers for comin in here.
Ill update this painting every now an again.

hey man, great painting, i really like the dynamics. it is a shame it wont be ready for thundeerdome, oh well. im thinking about entering the next one, it will be a first for the both of us. i can see what you are saying about MOK. i had no clue that it was so important (the moko i mean), i am sure the developers didnt mean any harm, and i would frankly be honored that i was the inspiration for a game, but i do understand where they are coming from. anyway, nice pic again and ill be thinking about our collab, i have no clue what we could do, maybe i could apint a drawing of yours?

Too Meke! (is it english "too" then Maori "Meke" or like Tu Meke?)
SicK!!! Sketch is awsome mate and the digi job does it justice nicely. You chose yourself a bitch of an angle to capture correctly, the arm is a *little* funky but to be honest I'd be surprised if anyone here could pull it off to a tee.. muscle, tendons'n all. Looks primo mate. Nailed the Moko, looks authentic as cuz. eh bro.
I'm looking forward to you teaching me how to use this grey tablet thing in front of me.. before I break the fuck'n thing.

Che che al. Kia Kaha mudda oosy. .

Rusty
October 31st, 2003, 01:44 AM
nah its "Tu meke"...hard to put it into english but it just basically means ,too much, awesome.:)

Madda orsy(dont know how the orsy bit is spelt) is samoan,i think it means muther fucker..lol.im not a fob so im not really sure.

Yeah i had to try something i know everyone else wouldnt of done,a real tricky ass pose instead of the classic 3 quarter thing, yeah everythings way of on it proportion wise, just tryed my best to get it looking close to right..

yeah bro, check out Dan milligans Maori inspired piece in the thunderdome, definatly has my vote, awesome shit..
so you got a tablet ey?..chur....ill be expecting some bomb ass coloured shit from you then,ah im still learning colour myself, best to look at those pros like Milligan, foster and crew, pretty much my inspiration..

chur bro,ill see ya when i see ya ey.:chug:
Rusty

Lukias
October 31st, 2003, 03:40 AM
hehe.. I know what Tu Meke means.. just wasn't sure of the spelling.
As for Mudda Orsy.. I didn't know it was Samoan but I figured what it meant. So I knew that I was saying "stand strong mother fucker". Meant in a matey way of course!!:)

I was just checking all the Thunderdome pieces when I saw Milligans I was going to ask you what you thought. So you dig huh?. I suppose the weapon additions are standard call with any of the thunderdome pieces, would be too hard to stay too authentic.. for comps like this the real deal can look a little tame. Oh and yeah he kicks alot of arse, Dan the man.

As for me painting with the tablet? Naa I tried twice and have decided to give it a rest for the moment. I have started oil painting, traditional wise, I want to learn the basics and feel comfortable. For some reason I have patience for oil painting but with the tablet pen in hand I wanted quick results and pissing around with colours, brushes, opacity etc had me tearing my fricken hair out, I haven't been that mad in a long time(Plus my results were shocking). I needed some Voltarin to take the edge off;)
I hope to show the meagre oil stuff some time.
