no CMYK mixing - I'm messing around w/trial version and it seems like you can only mix colors using RGB or HSV -- I come from a print background so that 's counterintuitive as hell

anyone know if there's a way to enter 4 color values in the pallette?

Painter has always been RGB. So there is no way to enter CMYK data directly in Painter.

Sorry!

thanks Phillipe
then how's it usually handled when work created in painter is going to be printed? RGB's great for web and monitors, but (professional) print requires CMYK . . . is there an export function, if so how do you guarantee color accuracy during conversion

. . . or is this where photoshop comes in

The ColorTalk dialog (hit the "n" key) and the Kodak CMS are supposed to handle color management. I don't do print work myself, so that's the extent of my knowledge on the subject...

Hi Grey,

An artist named Tim Jessell is heavily into the CMYK and colour management thing. As I understand it, he does CMYK conversion from Painter files in Photoshop (Mac OS 10.2.6).

A while back he was having trouble with colour shifts between Painter's RGB colour space and PS CMYK, due to different gamuts I believe. He then created a CMYK compatible Painter colour set in order to be able to pick colours from within Painter, such that they would remain comparatively unchanged when converted.

Tim's colour set is available for free download from my website; Click here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david.gell/Pages/Guest_Resources.html).

I understand that Tim is currently having problems with KCMS (colour management) in Painter 8; see this thread (http://www.critical-depth.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=382)

Athos Boncompagni has some 'colour separation' colour sets for Painter which may also be of use. They are available free from his website; Resources>Free stuff>Painter>Colour sets: click here (http://utenti.lycos.it/athos/)
