Asoir, WHAT is that guy doing????

England came out best yesterday. Trinidad & Tabago v Sweden went how we needed it to be, a draw. So at the mo its all good. I'm not a die-hard England fan though. The past years my confidence has been almost destroyed.
But, we'll see. I think they'll do ok.

The T/T-Sweden games was terrible, for Sweden. We needed to start with Kim Källström. Anyway, the most entertaining game that has been played was yesterday, Argentina- Ivory coast (I think that's what they are called in english).
Both teams were very good.

Yeah, the côte d'ivoire guys had some very bad luck, they were surprisingly the better team yesterday. That whole group is pretty top notch with the netherlands and serbia. No way to tell which one will make it through there.

England came out best yesterday.

psh only just mate, if we played at that level to a team that was a higher quality we would have lost SO badly, sven's giving me a headache, just cause crouch has played well the past couple of games he puts him up as a loan striker for almost the entire of the second half??!we almost completely fell apart towards the end. But still 3 points. COME ON LADS!:rendered:

I don't agree that they were the better team. Argentina had a more controlled game, better team game. Anyway, no match today I really look forward too. Brazil's first match on tuesday.

Well, there are only 3 teams, which convinced me yet with their performance:

Argentina
Ivory Coast
Netherlands

The other ones had serious problems, like Sweden, Portugal or England...Germany had a good result with 4:2, but they will never stand a chance with this performance against a big team...

And what the fuck did Angola yesterday? I mean they came out of the Africa Nations Cup against Nigeria, South Africa and Cameroon? Really disappointed of them, let's see how Togo and Ghana will play...I love the african football style...as seen on Ivory Coast, so powerful, fast and yet precise...

eh? i dont get it, heh.

yeah jeeeez im glad we came back from 1-0 down since no team managed that before us, and to be honest we were attacking a fair bit with some close calls. im not sure whether their 1st goal was a result of knocking our keeper out of the way seemed a mix of both that and bad timing... but last 3 goals were great i have no idea how cahill's made it through all those legs LOL

i also really enjoyed watching argentina v ivory coast, the africans have a mad team i hope ttey can make it out of that disaster group!!

i think the czechs are strong altho the u.s team was pretty poor tbh, and after the coach made some comments about our team i was suprised that his team werent too hot.

i think the best team iv seen so far has gotta be holland, that was fantasy football they played against serbia, just too bad they didnt score more. but all credit to serbia they had some really fluid passin goin, but robben just totally mind-#$#$ed them, i mean he was literally unstoppable. do u guys rem the back pass from gio i think to van der saar? normally keepers wouldnt even be able to keep the ball in let alone control it, but the way van did it was absolute magic, he just seemed to float in the air as he chested the ball. the ivory coast- argen match was good to see as well, one thing i noticed about the ivory coast is that everyone just let everyone else do their thing, there wasnt any "wtf i was free, why didnt u pass it?". they didnt win but still good to see that kind of thing. holland-argentina is wat im waitin for. wow that should be good. later

That Germany/Poland match really wasn't a very good one.
4 minutes of intense play at the end of 90 minutes of fairly poor football does not a great game make.

It was probably the most boring match I've watched so far... nothing really happened until the very end, and those couple of (intensely) near misses spurred Germany back into action.

I hope they plan to play better in their next game, they'll have to if they want to win.

Scotland v Brazil at their World Cup Group game. Ronaldo goes into the Brazilian changing room to find all his teammates looking a bit glum.

"What's up?" he asks.
"Well, we're having trouble getting motivated for this game. We know it's important but it's only Scotland. They're sh*te and we can't be bothered".

Ronaldo looks at them and says "Well, I reckon I can beat these by myself, you lads go down the pub."

So Ronaldo goes out to play Scotland by himself and the rest of the Brazilian team go off for a few jars.

After a few pints they wonder how the game is going, so they get the landlord to put the teletext on. A big cheer goes up as the screen reads "Brazil 1 - Scotland 0 (Ronaldo 10minutes)". He is beating Scotland all by himself!

Anyway, a few more pints later and the game is forgotten until someone remembers "It must be full time now, let's see how he got on". They put the teletext on.

"Result from the Stadium "Brazil 1 (Ronaldo 10 minutes) - Scotland 1 (Angus 89 minutes)".

They can't believe it, he has single handedly got a draw against Scotland!! They rush back to the Stadium to congratulate him. They find him in the dressing room, still in his gear, sat with his head in his hands.

He refuses to look at them. "I've let you down, I've let you down."

"Don't be daft, you got a draw against Scotland, all by yourself. And they only scored at the very, very end!"

"No, No, I have, I've let you down... I got sent off after 12 minutes"

It was like the ref just wasn't watching half the time, and I don't even know what the Croatians thought they were doing... at least 2 obvious and hilarious hand-balls, some crazy tackles, pulling Australians all over the place... not saying the Aussies were angels themselves, but some of the stuff the Croatians were trying was just crazy!

What do you guys thinks? Holland? Portugal?
well, basically both teams have awesome players with individual skills, but also both teams have problems to form a team which is playing well together...

I think Holland will make it 2:1 at the end...Portugal has a problem, which is called Ronaldo, he is too arrogant, though has fantastic skills...if he will play disciplined like Figo, he is definitely a troublemaker for the opponents defense...

And Switzerland vs Ukraine, hehe what a great chance for both teams to end with a respectable result in the world cup, easiest match up for both...

yeah well...that was a sad ending..so sad that it now has its own thread.

but on to Brazil and Ghana...

Any team that hardly does anything... has the opposing team pounding away like there's no tommorrow... and still wins by 3 must be good.

And Brazil didnt even score on 3 other opportunities where they had 2 guys in the box vs the goalie which boggles the mind...

That 2nd goal should not have counted...that changed the momentum a bit but it was nice to see Ghana still stay in the game all the way through..unlike some other teams...

You should see what Germany looks like this night. It's unbelievable. I wanted to go buy some food just after the game, the streets were filled with human crowds shouting, laughing, encouraging people in cars to blow the horn. Finally some high spirits in a country that has been in a steady downturn for almost 20 years.

Predictably poor performance in the end.

Ricardo made some very good saves during penalties.
Hargreaves was a machine, played magnificently, Crouch did pretty well too. England's defence were solid and quality.
Unfortunately the Portuguese also had a similarly solid side, so nothing much happened.
Rooney is an asshole, I'm glad he got sent off. He wasn't playing very well anyway. Fumbled the ball a lot.

Ah well. Next world cup, the same will happen - media hype up England team, England play a mediocre game, get knocked out in quarter-finals. Shame really.

im sorry but so happy england didnt win, they've been going on about it for 40 years, imagine how long they would if they won twice.

And as for rooney, Im not entirely sure why he was sent off, it looked as if it was for the push, but he did just jam his boot in a very sensitive area of the mans anatomy, after almost pulling him to the ground to keep the ball.

The disappointment england has now is there own fault, they played poorly the whole way through, with some great players, but poorly, and yet on their first match, which was a very poor start, mr. walkers crisps said it was the perfect start and that over confident attitude that so many english fans had and the fact that Im irish, makes me do this

:)

Disappointed for gerrard though, hes a good player, and i like him cause he stuck with liverpool.

I think Rooney's card was for the push. It's controversial, but his reputation plus the fact that he was stupid enough to do it in the ref's face probably did him in. The fact that he had just pulled the other player to the ground probably didn't help things.

And Ricardo was amazing! I've never seen a goalie that calm during a penalty shootout.

France is in. Zidane was, in a word, inspiring. And Brazil had only ONE shot on target the entire match, and it came in the dying minutes. Zidane's easily man-of-the-match, imho.

Change 'England' for 'Spain' and mutiply the media hype x 4 and you'll get the picture of what they were selling here after winning our first 3 matches against world class teams like Ukranie, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia :P

Then France put us in our place: a second rate team that never is gonna win anything serious in football...

As a summary for now i think the matches of this world cup were really DISAPPOINTING!!! No glory, no cool goals, tricks, good football at all...maybe 1 or 2 matches to enjoy...the rest was just mediocre and the tension was caused only by the fact of getting 1 goal could kick you off the cup...

I watched the World Cups since 1980 i guess...what unbelievable dramatic and genius matches there were...but this is by far the most boring world cup yet...

Let's hope that the last 4 matches will pull something off...

All favorite teams disappointed yet...

not everything in soccer is goals strategy
is a good thing to enjoy, the way they move
the players to nullify others teams is nice to watch
i like that, soccer has changed with more
tactic teams instead of many goal teams
i doubt it will ever return to how it was
in the old days like pele days and the like

i liked this worldcup , since small teams
are getting closer by being good strategy ones
for me a final with a team winning 3-0 and the like
is boring i want 2-1, 1-0 3-2 is mo exciting to
see teams like korea die in the field get surprised
see portugal play and all those tactic moves
and the way the team stands againts different
teams i take my hat for scolari, costa rica
playing good against germany all that is great
i would like to see african teams going next rounds

well, i am not seeing this as a coach or manager, i am a spectator and i want spectacular matches. Fuck the results...if 1 team loses because they threw everything into the offense and i can see a lot of goal scenes (also in their defense hehe) i take my hat off as a spectator, because i had fun.

Of course as a coach i would be kicked off my position, but i know there is also success by playing attractive football combined with strategy, but this WC it was out of balance, tending way too much to the strategic side...

And i agree to Yiako...no surprises this Cup...no fun :)

i think it has something to do with the way this cup was organised, that the teams had more time to prepare and werent as tired from the rigours of the european season...i think its true its changed though, it seems so much easier to foul someone than to perfectly time a tackle hehe.

Anyways, Germany sucked ala the USA. Lots of energy and ball possession, paired with total impotence in front of the goal. They earned that loss.

As long as they kick out Italy in the final, any winner today is a good choice. Although I'd prefer France over Portugal because they have a great team.

I mean dont get me wrong n all I was rooting for Germany against Argentina, but after England (*no comment* *exhale*) Italy was my next favourite team to win the world cup, and so that Grosso goal felt sooooooooo good!:D And to the people complaining about the falling and dramatizin, yeah ur right it makes me sick,I jus want Italy to beat France in the final and win the World Cup 8)

I REALLY wasn't expecting Germany to loose to Italy, but fair play! It was a fantastic match to watch (although i was working in a pub at the time so i only caught half of it)

Poor england!!!!!!!!!!!

You know.... i actually HATE football, but i only watch it when the world cup is on. Don't ask. I'm proberly too busy drawing or questioning my existance to be any interested in football... Don't get me wrong, i'm sure you have to be very skillful to play it and that i reallt couldn't withstand running around a football pitch for 90+ mins in 35 degree weather. Its just the... 'side effects' that come with it that i don't like. Since i work in a pub, i've seen many people get hurt from football. Some even fatal! Its not nice to know that humans can lower themselves to such a pathetic level that they have to go around and glass people and wake everyone up in the middle of the night, chanting their teams songs and name... I sound like an old man... I do enjoy sitting down to watch an England game in the World Cup, or even having a little game of football myself, but its just the drunks and violence that can usually come with football that i dislike...

Good game... too bad Germany lost, but I'm glad they got that far anyway. I'm not that much of a soccer fan either... just for the world-/european cup, so after the finals it will be just the same to me who won ;) I'd just like to see Zidane play the match of his life (since it's gonna be one of his last - or even his last?), watch delicious soccer skill and italian-butt-kicking on his part!
Shame if they'd lose to portugal though..

Another awesome game, Portugal dives notwithstanding. ;)

MoP
July 5th, 2006, 04:03 PM
Clean and fair game, haha!
Portugal diving all over the place. It was getting a bit ridiculous - the ref should have handed out some yellow cards to discourage that behaviour.
It's so stupid, they even took dives without being touched when they had a chance to break through if they kept running - but no, they had to fall over instead... silly.

France played very well in general. Henry didn't seem to be making as much effort as he should, though - lots of standing around and not running full pace when it was necessary. Barthez was hilarious - a few great fumbles which almost resulted in equalisers... luckily for him, he avoided that embarrassment, just!

The final 5 minutes were intense though, Portugal had a load of chances that they really should have taken advantage of, but were just too desperate to keep it cool and play well enough.

amen MoP.

Portugal just played...well too offensive but not enough thought, a bunch of players went for the goal alone, and forgot to make plays and passes that would have made better plays!

France vs Italy will be awesome! ...But I secretely think Italy might win. oo;

Sad thing is that it's going to be the last game of Zidane.

It's a pleasure seeing him playing, like in slow mo, untouchable, faster in mind that anybody else. I would like a French win for him, but I like Italy and I think they really need the win to overcome that calcio fiasco. So I'm just sitting with a couple beers and enjoy the game!

Dunno what the hell he was thinking, but at least he did it with style.

wha?! with style? you mean just because he's good looking he just came off as a bad ass? He's retiring from world cup and this is what people are gonna remember him for. Even with the loss, his header that Buffon knocked out was THE highlite of the game...that's doing it in style...not knockin your opponent down with your head.
And to do that when France had all the momentum, putting your team down 1 player...how selfish is that. I just dont understand.
I cant wait to hear his side of the story - if theres one...I wonder what that little exchange was between him and the Italian...WTF made him do that? What a disappointing end...left a real bad taste...just sad.

Congrats to Italy.

As for what Zidane did...It really isn´t that hard to undestand, running for 90 minutes in a boiling pot of preasure and frustration can make a guy explode in anger, beyond reason of cource, anger as never been the most reasonable feeling.

I´m sure he didn´t planned it to much and there wasn´t to much blood running to his brain at that moment... I mean a headbutt agains another guy´s chest is not a really smart move in any context, unless you have Zidane´s skull.

This is the beeb, they lost all interest the second England were knocked out.

France were the better team for most of it, shame Viera twanged a hamstring and Zidane lost the plot.

Zidane is chosen as the best player of the World Cup, despite his headbutt.

And he could have went to receive the medal, it was his personal choice to stay away (and the best one in this situation).

Still i think Zidane will return for the Euro 2008 in Switzerland/Austria...he has to in order to wipe out this stain from his career, he won't be able to wipe it out totally, but he can set a better ending...

In latino america, people kill for soccer, just by wearing the opposite team´s shirt is reason enough for the other guys to beat you up to a bloody pulp.

You remmember Argentina´s reaction when they lost against Germany.

I think is sad...and extremely predictable for people to turn agains their own heroes if they make one ( just one) mistake, neverming what he did before, or how hard he tryed to keep up with the espectations.

lol, Germany had the referee by their side in every match they played. & Zidane is my new hero! He didn't ruin his career or anything like that (he already had a kick ass one), therefore he closed it with finesse (like us latinamericans say, "con broche de oro"). He personally demanded respect for whatever the italian dude said to him, & I believe that's being a man.

Thats all fine..being a man...but if you have a more than a better chance of helping your country win the world cup - in your last appearance - and you pull that move and take yourself out...thats the farthest from being a man..thats being a fuckin caveman.
I dont care what the Italian said, (allegedly a dirty terrorist?) things like that are said all time in sports. If you're a man, you beat the Italians on the field, not take yourself out and let your team and country down. This isnt a street game.

Zidane only missed 10 minutes of the game, and on top of that, Trezegeut would have still come in for Henry, and missed the penalty shot, so it doesn't make much difference. I'm a much bigger fan of Zidane after the headbutt, that was freekin awesome. He knew what he was doing. I don't look at it as a stain on his career, I look at it as the man who doesn't take shit from anyone. I've always wanted to headbutt somebody myself, now I can live vicariously.
