You have a very original style - very fluid, very cool. Some things could use some refining, proportional discrepencies and whatnot. But goddamn, pretty stuff man. Love it.

Very cool, man. Kinda difficult to really give sketches a crit, since they're. You know. Sketchy. But that last page, left side. Asses tend to curve out. His just follows the line of his back. So, yeah. Watch the ass there. Perhaps try varying the line quality a bit more, putting down some more confident strokes - stuff looks a bit light on that second page throughout. More please :yayca:

Hey guys, thought i'd put up a few more pages of doodles and studies. Have fun!
ChrisMayernik
June 25th, 2006, 03:31 AM
sweet!
Lots of great sketchbook practice. The real sercret to drawing is the more you practice the better you get. Some of your lines look sketchy and this might be because you are drawing with your wrist and not your whole arm. Try using your whole arm and don't wrest the wrist on the paper but hover over it. It's difficult and takes practice but is worth it. Control is something you want to work on as soon as you can because the sooner you get better at drawing lines the faster you learn and the nicer your work looks.

Chris, thanks heaps for the advice man and im going be careful to fix the sketchiness. I think mainly its because im working in a small book, but hey, practice is perfect hehe.
Myxomatosis, thanks aswell for the little pointers and i hope u like my update.

i like the senviros that you submitted at first, and ur sketches are cool, but some finished works would be better... they'd also give us a much better idea of where your strengths and weaknesses lie.

July 4th, 2006, 12:36 AM
quick hand studies are a good thing, they help not only understand the way hands should look, but also take a little of the edge off when drawing hands in the future, i know in my personal experience as well as with some friends of mine, we dreaded drawing hands when we first started out, but through quick studies of hands we became comfortable with drawing them because we had a better idea of how they should not only look, but their design and form in connection with how they should work.

Hello again. My PS is being an ABSOLUTE BITCH, when i open it, it crashes, so i cant balance and crop my images very good at ALL. Ive had to use photo editor which sucks plenty of things. But here's a little update, the quality is crappier than before, i'll try to fix PS. More crits!
Janshi
July 5th, 2006, 09:26 PM
Absolutely lovely ink work going on here, mate. Your sketching style is loose but very suggestive - a few well placed lines can do more than a thousand placed randomly so. Something I really need to learn :P Keep on practicing with anatomy, you look like you have the whole thing almost down pat!
Also, mind showing us some other watercolours? They're class.
j a k e
July 6th, 2006, 12:04 AM
Janshi: yeah ill definately get to some more watercolors mate, they're definately on the top of my to do list. Keep a look out mate :)
All alone at home this morning, but i was super lazy, so i only did one page of hand studies. I used white pen and it was pretty fun if i do say so myself. I'll update again tomorrow guys!

July 7th, 2006, 02:16 AM
dont rely so heavily on photoshop and whatnot to make your sketches have more dimension to them, use more rendering, shade more, show the contrasts in darks and lights, bring your drawings to life!
j a k e
July 7th, 2006, 02:44 AM
This1: This is true, but i was really just talking about the actually image quality and scan quality, but i know exactly what your saying and i do need to do more rendering, true.
At the moment im really trying to just mainly get form with only lines, to show the form through the lines only. If you know what I'm saying.
Here's a few more pages, another update to come. Keep the crits coming!
Fishspawn
July 7th, 2006, 03:01 AM
I like your lines - especially the hand studies. However, i would also suggest adding more value. A little bit could go a long way and make your anatomy studies go from cool to brilliant. Keep drawing!

Thanks Asoir. That SP i spent more time than my usualy 10 minutes on, as i do with my marker SPs. Plus i used a mirror, which really helps. All my Little Marker SPs are done from memory.

Thanks mate. I'd definately have to agree with the not as great things. Those doodles and SPs are only 5-10 mins each, so i suppose that for me the final look of it really is dependant on the first minute or so.
On an off topic, i got the Most recent ImagineFX(june?) and its fabulous. Congrats to Fellah getting some exposure!

The TD piece is looking great! though maybe the ground in the left looks a bit too flat, adding some values/hightlights would make it better.
On the character in 86, the waist looks a bit too large, making the upper part of the thigh also too large =)

hey man, i really gotta say, youre improving a lot, and your creating your own original style that i dig..A LOT.
A generic reply would say, do anatomy, study this, but just keep doing what your doing, its a pleasure to view, and its great your being adventurous and creative.
So keep going man, the td piece was great, keep injecting humour into your peices and youve got a winner.
keep experimenting with it all, try not using linework, or different rendering styles, or maybe bust out with a pen or something.
Oh, and those heads are delicious, think about different nationalities and try to draw stareotypical features from memory, seeing white, instead of shade is refreshing...

your style is interesting. I would say push it all the way to the breaking poing - go carzy with it, get stupid with it, then pull back and work on foundations, you know, anatomy, form, lighting, etc, then get stupid with your style again -- find out what "limits" this style has for letting you express yourself. It is really good to see the different stuff you have.

Hey man, really enjoying your stuff again - very refreshing to see more style and design based stuff everynow and then. Don't forget however to stretch out and explore, not just in subject matter but also in technique; that's a big secret to advancing I think.
Speaking of which I've been a bit bored lately with what I've been doing and my "usual" processes and have decided to go nuts, explore and have some fun - I think you've inspired that a bit probably so I did a sort of thank you over some of your lines.
I don't want to steal any of your thunder so I'm just going to post a thumb that will link to the full.

Hey, it's funny you're not in the UK dude, cause your work fits pretty well bang in the middle of Cartoonfox and Eriboss.
Really great handling of that pen there. Awesome to see such confident lines, especially in one so young. And I LOVE your hands. The photoshop stuff is awesome too - the silhouettes are great, you're using brushes in a great way, and they're so cute haha - seriously, go look at eriboss's work if you haven't already. His range is awesome, and I see your work as heading in the same direction.
Now, I'm almost afraid to give you this advice, cause I reckon you'll just explode if you take it. For me, I only truly started improving at a good rate once I tried to finish every drawing. I posted a thing about this in my sb thread, about how I like to use a sketchbook. It's not the only way to do it, but it's how I do. So, what I'd like to see is a few less pages filled in anger, and a few more fully realised drawings.

dirty_cAwesome bro! In fact i check out Eriboss's stuff quite often, i suppose even if its not a concious thing, his influence shows. Cartoonfox is also a good inspiration, i absolutely love his monsters. Thankyou mate for the awesome advice and tips. You have really made me think about how my art progresses. Whenever i draw now i'll take your advice into action. A million thanks! Thanks for keeping your sketchbook so awesome too.

I was thinking what would best suit you when you grow up and what you can do now to get monies.
The t-shirt idea is good, and there is a site where you upload your design, and they do the rest(printing of shirt, sending off, etc) Im sure youve heard of it, if not ill tell you later.
Another option is to start a webcomic. Plenty of good , humourous ideas here, id definately come.
You could also think of childrens book illustrations later on, or maybe website designs.

Looking really good jake, really like these design - fun, spontaneous and exciting. One or two tips: Careful for decorating speechbubbles - it often demends attention and takes focus off the actual visuals. Also make sure your text remains straight - diagonal text also demends too much attention. You never have to worry about people seeing the text because we are so used to looking for letters and words. Simplify the text and then the viewer will give the visuals a chance too - which is what you want.
Would also like to see some textures from - try to develop something that suits your style. Other than that this is really great work you're doing here!

Ugh, just wrote a reply and goofed - went something like this:
Nice Sketchbook!
Pity about the PS and Painter demos, be a shame to see you stop being so productive - not to have you neglect your traditional media but:
You tried out the various free programs out there?
Opencanvas is pretty popular, simple but effective. Searching the forums or just google should produce a download for you, old version only I believe.
Artrage, pretty cool program - nice mess oil feel to it's main brush. Version two has some other cool stuff I think too.
The GIMP, more of a photoediting type of software - never used it but I think it has some basic painting tools. But honestly, the first two are probably better for you.
Cheers, oh and I remember a thread... hold on here we go:

yo! i think i can see improvement in the paintings already, thats great! good to see those SB pages flowing, remember that you will be able to distort (with that sweet sweet style) and minipulate things better and better if:
you make an effort to really understand how things look.
The way parts of the face curve, the way the figure bends the way the eyelids curve and fold back into the face etc all these things can be improved infinetly by any artist (not having ago at you :) ) but you may not realise how you can improve them till you painstakingly observe them in real life,
during the day when your not drawing-say sitting with people- make the effort to notice these things and bank them in your mind, then balance it out with some actual observational drawing, doesnt matter how stylized you wanna be, by knowing and constantly reminding yourself how things look i think you will find new and crazy ways to draw with those lines of yours man.
omg wall of text, ill end my rant, keep posting :)

great updates as usual mate. Think with your sketching you might want to look some at form and creating depth. Even though your designs are essentially 2d, the can still have depth.

August 24th, 2006, 05:42 AM
I only looked at the first page and the fourth page but my advice would be to cut out the "fun" drawings and work on drawing as accurately and exactingly from reference as you can. That means spending alot of time on your drawing and finishing it as much as possible.
Oh and (you know it's coming) stop drawing nudes. I don't like them.
j a k e
August 24th, 2006, 05:48 AM
Goodbye...fromthevoid I have found that some of your comments around here lately to be a little unnecessary. Why should i cut the fun out of drawing? Isn't that what its all about? You don't like nudes? Who CARES?
Do you even have your own sketchbook or do you just comment on other peoples?

hey jake, I'm starting to addicted to your style, painting and drawings. Very unique and expressive. :) oh btw. nice sketchbook (the real deal book) you have there.
Goodbye...fromthevoid: why are you bashing about each and every thread about not doing nude drawings? If there were no nude, there would be no art at all. Why is that you find nude so offensive? Sorry for the harsh words but I just can't understand what's the point of all this.

Love the style, quite energetic and interesting!
Im worried though that being that young youre making yourself too comfortable with only such a style, that it will be difficult to move away from it at a point. Do make sure to do less stylized studies alongside this fun stuff. A foundation in realism will also give you the knowledge of what you can and cant exaggerate and stylize in making it look good.
Seedling
August 27th, 2006, 11:22 AM
Hi J a k e,
If your intent is to go the illustration route, either in the freelance sense, or in the sense of going fine-arts/figurative, then I’ll second what SirGreensock says. Get a broad foundation in realism. It’s easy to shift on a whim from realism to one of many stylized approaches to illustration, but it’s impossible to shift on a whim from an ingrained wacky style to realism, or for that matter, one ingrained wacky style to another.
Which isn’t to say that your current wacky style isn’t good (it’s quite fun, in fact) but I would hate to see it hold you back.

September 5th, 2006, 05:21 AM
hey, i like the direction this piece is going in.
one thing that might help you with it is a more defined value pattern... if you break down the composition into two parts as simply as possible, it becomes less difficult to figure out where to go. is the important part a light shape against a dark shape, or is it a dark shape against light? if you think of it as a big puzzle, with only a couple pieces to connect, it's easier to make the big decisions first, then the smaller, more detailed decisions later.
for example, i think the sky should be lighter than the rest of the image... maybe not white, but visibly higher in value than the character and hill he's on... so the puzzle consists of two pieces, the guy & land, and the sky... everything else you do to the picture would fit into those 2 parts, one relatively lighter or darker than the other.
hope that made sense, good luck, you're kickin ass, especially for your age.
