yeah that was a great update. i like the holy guy too. i like the guy with little hooves poking out his chest more though. i freakin love the grotesqueness of your style in these drawings. not sure if grotesque is really the exactly right word, but it's a cool style. it'd be really cool to see some of those colored in photoshop. keep it up.

Nice man, I'm liking you color palette on these (as usual). I've started me many an eviroment with just a color palette - starting to do that a little more again too. Helps keep things harmonious and produces some nice variety, I get stuck in the same palette too often I think.
Looks like you are having some fun with some texture brushes, sweet! I couldn't tell if you were already using them, but the layer modes multiply; overlay, screen and color burn are pretty hand for some quick and dirty shapes and variety.
Don't forget, when working without lines you've added the dimension of various edges to the mix - make sure and use it to your advantages.
Anyways; stole your latest and had some quick fun with it :) Hope you don't mind!

Idiot Apathy Great to have you around again Tom. Yeah, i've started to have some fun with just colours, because i like making pretty things. I was a little confused with all the types of layer modes. Should really get more familiar with that eh? I LOVE what you did with that picture of mine dude. Really awesome, great atmosphere. As usual, you're my colour hero! Oh, and the monsters you did are great!

Your style is very illustrative but in my opinion it lacks some form. I LOVE your attention to details...like the fat in the cheeks...wonderful. I could see something like this in something like a magazine but I think you would benefit more if some of the features weren't just "pasted" on the face.
Maybe? Take it with a grain of salt though.

September 13th, 2006, 07:17 AM

Dude, jake, these lines are great. Lots of character in these drawings. The style reminds me of a few underground comics I used to flip through a while back... you've got a good look and a hell of a start by doing this at 16. I don't even want to look at the horseshit I did when I was 16.
I would try to experiment with adding a whole range of values and depth behind your lines. I love the graphic, two or three tone color schemes too, but it would be interesting to see you push in that depth and see if it adds a new dimension to your work.

A doodle tonight while i was studying for my exams which begin on Monday!
Idiot Apathy
September 15th, 2006, 02:15 PM
Heheh, add the dotted lines with the scissor icon and it's ready to print.
Something to think about - not sure you're process on these but it might look good to seperate some of the (talking about the one above this one mainly) seperate some of the different shapes even just a little. I was thinking maybe just his mouth and hair, eyes too maybe. This would of course change the entire look, better or worse I dunno. If it's all flattened you might try using a multiply layer overtop for things that will end up darker - try picking the color you think it should be and then going lighter and brighter than that. Tweak it with ctrl+u (hue/saturation palette) as well. For things lighter try Overlay on another layer, this time go lighter and more probably less saturated than what you'd think ( I think, but you always have options with ctrl+u).
Just a thought, Cheers dude.

So true, thats what i was thinking hah.
I've been trying to experiment with digital lately, not that i;ve had much time. I've always been a little confused with all this layer modes etc. I'm getting a little used to it, trying to incorporate some stuff etc. All comes with practice i suppose. in this one http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21865&stc=1&d=1157973290 i think there needs to be a bigger one in the foreground, maybe to the bottom right i dunno just to give it more depth and impact perhaps.

This last one is pretty fun mate, interesting concept.
I know it's more of a iconic design sort of thing, but just something to think about with your floating octopus herd, a good way to increase depth would be to use many different values - not necessarily a large range, just different values for each octopus showing them all at different distances. A really good way to show depth is with overlap, you have one of them overlapping but if you say had two of pretty different values and sizes overlapping that would really hit it home. (Of course you might have more than just one or two.) Overlap can be used nicely to seperate foreground from middle and back too.
Just some thoughts, cheers bro.
JAKE
September 24th, 2006, 06:43 PM
Ah alrighty. Ill definately take that into consideration if I'm able to revise it. In my next shirt design i think ill try some overlapping, looks fun :)

That is some nice collabs there. I really like the last one. Also the third one from the bottom is nice. Some really ood watercolor effect there. The first one seems a bit bald compared to the others. I think it could be improved by introducing some warm shadows.
Cheers man and god luck in the TC.
