Word up.....yo.
I would love to remain a New Yorker myself, but now that I am trying to get a position as a concept artist, I fear I may have to move away! WHy can't there be more developers in NEw York?!?!? It makes no sense!
I guess there are a few. Not too many though. Does Acclaim do any development in there Glen Cove headquarters?
I agree, maybe us New Yorkers oughta band together and form some sort of NYC Concept Artist coalition. We can form a union and go on strike until half of the developers in California move out here because we don't think its fair for them to have such nice weather over there.
Oh well, maybe a cult would be better.
Amphex - Jew Jersey, huh? Well, I dunno. It might take some convincing. :D

I did a comic strip for my college newspaper (at Syracuse University) where I made fun of New Jersey and I recieved TONs of angry letters! Of all the things I poked fun of in my comics, that one recieved the most outrage... unbelievable. Touchy, touchy those New Jersites!
But in all seriousness, what the F%#* is up with Interstate 95 just disappearing around Trenton when going Northbound!?! I say its an evil plot to force you to take the New Jersey turnpike from the Delaware Bridge...... BASTARDS!

Dude seriously what is up with that? Have you ever driven down 295 through NJ too...without making any turns (no lie) it goes from 295 North...to 295 South...then like 15 - 20 miles later it switches back to 295 North...it's so bizarre

god bless I-95, gets you to the Florida beaches without having to venture westward more than absolutely necessary . . .

MindCandy - HAR! That doesn't surprise me. I drove on 295 once and I don't remember that, but I do remember thinking "I never want to drive on this highway again", so I just grit my teeth and pay the 5 bucks for the Turnpike. At least the Turnpike is STRAIGHT!
grey - I have a love-hate relationship with I-95. It gives, yet takes so much. I also think the Turnpike conspiracy makes I-95 feel divided, torn between to worlds, one world free and open, the other expensive, smelly, and dangerous.

if by that you're talking about how almost impossible it is to get out of the city by car then I'm with you 100%. Ever pick up a rental in Bklyn and drive it out of the 5 boroughs? It's a gauntlet; potholes, west side highway, bridges, tolls and every psycopath from the bronx (no offense KOZ) on your bumper
then you break out and suddenly it's all nice american highway as far as the eye can see
I'd rather fly

you may be right, all I know is they posted a call for artists (through gamasutra I think) a couple years back, and the position was described as being in their NY office

jrr...dont go giving me that excuse...waterstreet is only 270 bucks a month or something....you could draw portraits on the street and earn that much.
thats your calling...there is no doubt about it....one of these days youll realize it.

Sorry to be annoying, but would anyone be up for enlightening me regarding what an atelier is, and what "waterstreet" is?

So I'm late to this thread, but what I wanted to ask is kinda relavant. I might be coming to New York this fall to take classes at the Art Students League or the Water Street for like a semester/year away from my school and was wondering what you New York artists do for jobs and money. Maybe more specifically what students or young artists still taking classes do for money in the city for supplies, rent, etc. This would be some good info to have just to have and also for planning ahead. I know what that stuff is like where I'm at here in Cleveland because I've done it for the past couple years, but I'm wondering what it's like out there. And if it works out I'll definitely holla with you New Yorkers.
amphex - There's a good discussion and thread about ateliers here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=2959). The Water Street is an atelier in New York run by Jacob Collins (http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/art.asp?aid=821). Jason has talked about it a couple times in other threads. Check out the accredited ateliers and school section at Art Renewal and you'll find out some more about it too.

depends on your skills, but Aquent (http://www.aquent.com) is a good temp agency here; as long as you know Quark, Illustrator Photoshop they'll hook you up
otherwise last I checked you need to have an MFA to serve coffee at D & D . . .

Thanks grey. Yeah, serving coffee etc. is always an option, I was just wondering about art-related jobs for students and young artists. The market for that kind of stuff is pretty weak here in Cleveland, so I was curious about what it would be like in a place like New York. Anybody doing anything like street portraits or does that not really happen?

i did portraits in the streets when i was like 16. there's alot of street portrait people. mostly immigrants who need the money from the tourists who pay them.

IN case anybody in NY is looking for agood place to do life drawing there is a place on Spring Street Between LaFayette and (Carter I think.... well, its between LaFayette and Broadway anyways). Only $10 bucks and they have about 3 sessions of about 4 hours a day. I go there occasionally. Anyone else been there?
Also, The Society of Illustrators also has figure drawing classes, but I think they are only twice a week, and occasionally they have live music and figure drawing events which can sometimes be fun because you get to meet all kinds of zany old Illustrators....

<=== Born in Brooklyn... moved to NJ a long, long time ago.
NJ can indeed suck pretty hard, but please don't include the entire state in that sentiment. The Northwest corner where I live now is a beautiful place to live (very rural and a stones throw from Frank Frazetta's house)... and nothing like the Northeast side that most NYers are referring to when they say "Jersey Sucks" (I've lived there too).
As far as I-95 being a maze... yeah, it can be... but those loops are for good reason fellas. If you look at a map, those are beltways which take you around the major cities (Trenton, Philly, Balt & DC), so that you don't have to drive through them, which can be a nightmare... unless you're doing it at 4am.
