Don't know if this has been posted yet, but I think it's pretty important. I just filled out the petition under the ACT NOW link. I think everyone on this site should do the same too.

Here in the US that's about all you can do is fill out petitions. You find a government representative that will be willing to speak on behalf of your cause, and they will show the number of citizens supporting or denouncing whatever cause it is when they meet to decide on the laws. I would imagine the corporations will try to push this through before Bush is out of office. As president he has never vetoed any law (http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0816/p01s04-uspo.html), and has challenged more laws than all US presidents combined. (http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/06/04/bar_group_will_review_bushs_legal_challenges/)
You're right about petitions, they seem pretty weak. However, I've seen petitions work on in the local city government level. I used to live in a town that wanted to build a large mall in one area. The problem was that it would've displaced 100's of local residents. Two large apartment buildings, and loads of houses. The city and some businesses wanted it, but the resident's rallied and signed petitions. These were used on the day they voted to approve the construction. Well, it failed, and the people got to keep their homes and property. It just takes enough people to make a change.

This is scary stuff. I just found out my own representative in the house voted against the internet today... what a suckass! I don't care what else he has done good for my community, he sided with the giant filthy rich corporations to egg me out of the most liberating tool of free speech ever devised. He isn't getting my vote again.
I say sign the petition, and then call email or fax your congressman and senators and tell them how they should vote on this issue. Too many people in this country are apathetic about what goes on around them and that's part of the reason we are in such deep doo here.

I sometimes wonder, how does any government take over something that is created by the people for the people?
I tried to sign for it, but I'm not American and they didn't accept it. But then again - If whichever country sets this precedence - then it is bad news for teh world. So I hope they could extend or include yet another petition for global participants.
We're paying for internet SERVICE and its already not cheap. I don't want to be paying for the internet itself when I'm already subjected to advertising and paying for a variety of webspaces that I maintain.

If people do lose the internet ( a shame it would be indeed), then this companies should take responsability for damages in case of cyber-terrorism. Also they should have other legal responsabilitys.....personally I think they are getting themselves into something to big for them to control......Unless the goverment gives this companies some magical loophole-ish laws for them to take only the responsability of charge for it, and that´s more likely to happen.
One thing I wonder, how come the U.S goverment get´s to choose what to do with something that is suppose to be property of everyone around the world?, are they looking for an even more negative image??

heh...thats whats happrning here in germany starting next year. There is a governmanet branch called the GEZ which collects a monthly fee if you own a TV, Radio. The reason they collect is (and this is thouroughly retarded and a mafia way of fucking the people over imo), if you own a TV, Radio you "could" watch public televison/radio and therefore you must pay for it. There is no way they can prove youre watching it and there is no way of me saying I only watch cable not public TV.... If you say I only watch DVDs on my TV they will put a clamp (literally break) on your receiver plug on your TV.
Thats like accusing someone of rape, even if he didnt do it....."but he had the equipment to do it!"
anyway too make a long story short, coming 2007, ALL computers that have internet capabilities will fall into the same law... because you could watch public TV on them via the internet.
As if I dont have anything better to do then watch fucking german public TV on my comp!!!
In other words Im paying the Govmnt a fee for the internet..... SUCKASS!!!!

Some organisation like GEZ is here in Austria to and rumours have it that they plan to do something similar...of course just rumours but when germany brings that law through im sure my country will follow you
