This is my first post, although I’ve been lurking around for about a month. I feel like thief for not contributing sooner. Everything I post here will be from my imagination without any reference. My goal this summer is to really build up my figure drawing arsenal. I’m gonna be posting new studies every day so hopefully this’ll be showing some improvement as the summer goes along.

Right now I’m working on Loomis’ books. Anyone know where I can get a pdf of Creative Illustration? I’ve got the other four in three ring binders. I drew a bunch of his funny heads, closed the book, and then drew some of my own. The figures are just some simple cylinders and spheres. I’ll be adding more and more anatomy as I learn it. Nothin too complex as of yet, but it’s a start. The halftone paper style was inspired by Mentler’s (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26748) awesome anatomy studies.

Hey, welcome to CA! Great stuff here! Loving those heads. For the book, go to WIKI at the top of the page, then e-books, and the link should be there. If you can't find it, I'll dig it up for ya. Great stuff, keep it coming!

Boring stuff today. Just practicing the “ball and plane” way of constructing heads.

Here’s today’s. I’m practicing Loomis’ Drawing the Head and Hands. Trying to understand the features of the face. Still crap but getting better.

hey there! last three pages look awesome. great to see you are able to transport everything you've learned to quickly into your own designs. i like the (compared to your first posts) more fluent and sketchy approach, too. looking forward to your next pages! :) cheers,

Thanks Stine. I agree, the more I practice, the more confident and loose my stuff gets. I worked on tone in Loomis’ Heads and hands today. I’m getting a better three-dimensional feel for drawing and “sculpting” with the lines. Instead of just posting imaginative stuff like I said at the start, I’ll be posting studies as well so I can show what I’ve been learning and then how I try to apply it. Getting a little better each day. The first three are of myself in the mirror.

Here are some of todays. I worked on girl’s heads in Loomis Heads and Hands book.

http://www.michaelgioffredi.com/images/CASketches/sketch27.jpg

They started to steer toward a same, boring manikinish style since I wasn’t using an actual living personality to base them off of. I turned on the T.V. and started some loose drawings of a nice looking cook on the Food Network. It was a bit challenging at first, but I started to get the hang of it…

Rushed to the bathroom to draw myself during a commercial…

Then back to the T.V.

http://www.michaelgioffredi.com/images/CASketches/sketch33.jpg

Then back to Loomis. A few are copies, most are invented.

Then on to old women. The first three are copied, the rest invented.

Finally, no reference stuff testing what I’ve learned.

Thanks Justin. Not much today, my head hurts too much. The first is a study of the eyes and wrinkles. I find the eyes are easiest to draw without reference if they're thought of as two planes intersecting a sphere at a right angle. Also it seems that most of the wrinkles of the face "originate" from the center of the eye, even the ones on the forehead.
