View Full Version : DSG 1079: Fantasy Tech: LAND VEHICLE UTILIZES LARGE BALLOONS TO EASE PAYLOAD WEIGHT

[ It probably also has many many wheels, and certainly extensive rigging. ]
[ Sortuv a cross between a semi and a dirigible... ]
[ ... or a between a covered wagon and a hot-air balloon. ]
[ You get the idea, I think... ]
[ The great burden of weight, and the power needed to move it horizontally, is lessened by the inflatable aspects. ]
[ Rock on. ]

Hauling expensive and often explosive terraforming gasses, this Martian hauler has air bags on all sides protecting it from the rough terrain over which it must travel.

LoL is that sarcasm?
This has got to be one of the worst dsg topics I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a few since at least 2000.
How about this for a topic - Alien rabbit with diaper to lessen leakage. :dur:
Whatever happened to the cool topics like sci fi pirate with mechanical limb?
Pirates are cool-everyone likes pirates - or at least some type of archetypical character.
A balloon on a machine is just not cool man - unless it's an airship.
Otherwise it just ends up looking like a cheap tonka truck with a giant condom strapped to it.

I like the topic, I only hope I get time to properly illustrate this :)
surfacemonkey is my favourite so far, and kudos to everyone who seriously tackled the topic :P

Nice entry Oddo - I like the steam-era kindof design. Neat
Here's mine. Large cargo containers are attached to helium filled balloons. The balloons are attached to the land-vehicle which tugs them along. This reduces weight on the vehicle so that it doesn't sink into the soft desert sand.

Bloody photoshop jammed into the screen while working this. Didn't remember to save in time either so had to rework from a screencapture, hehe.

Quickie design to go with my coffee this morning. All I have the time to do today but maybe I'll go back into it later for my nonexistent sketchbook thread or something.
The idea is that such a balloon would really only need to be deployed in te event of an emergency. Hence the big bright orange balloon... international sign for "HELP ME!". Works both to alleviate... whatever and act as a beacon? Who knows.

How astute of you. Of course if you were around back in the day you would know that there was an older board and you had to create a new account for the current board.

lets not argue children... our topics come all kinds.. and some appeal to some people and some to others.... and we try them all... unless we happen to be working 3 summer stock theater shows at once, and have more work to do than we want to think about.
so don't be so durned judgemental, and draw that cheap tonka truck withthe condom on it..I wanna see it ;P

Ah there did come some post after all ... and some really nice ones.
I especially like yours Oddo. Really nice style - simple and relaxed, yet expressive :)
I tried some sketching for this topic as I really wanted to join in the fun again, but the best I could come up with looked like a toy car with a ballon d*ldo floating over it ... just noo good :D

I didn't know it had to be futuristic with certain things. O well, I don't want this to go to waste. Took like 7 minutes.

Well, we all gotta start somewhere...
New member, first post. Ink on paper with shading added in Paint Shop Pro 7.
And, yeah, my perspective/architecture/shading/texture/ability-to-handle-a-pen sucks...
The distant land had long been saddled with increasingly decadent and eccentric monarchs, but King Minos XXVI took matters to the extreme. Upset with the loss of the forested view his ancestors had enjoyed (the trees felled to fuel their endless hunger for wars, bonfire parties, and other royal projects of dubious merit), he commissioned the construction of a wagon big enough to move his whole castle to greener lands many miles away. The whole project, which consumed the last virgin stand of trees in the forest, was doomed to failure until a giant balloon filled with heated air was attached, lightening the load just enough for the horses to pull it. Unfortunately, the balloon developed a slow leak, and as the wagon entered the Blackwater Swamps it deflated entirely, stranding men, horses, and castle to sink to their deaths. The upper turrets of Minos's castle still protrude from the muck, and today it is known as Fool's Keep. It is said that the king's vast treasure, plundered from a hundred cities, still lies within, but no thief has survived the snakes and alligators and venomous spiders to find out.

Brightdreamer -- welcome to the dsg; great first post; i love it when i get to read a little background story; it sure makes the drawing that much richer. A great first attempt; i'm sure you'll learn lots from the talented people here. One way to get a handle on the issues you spoke of is to use reference pix; just google it up, and when you find something that matches your mood, try to recreate it! Works great.

when Feeblie's Circus moved from town to town Ralph and Joe thought they could save on fuel if they inflated the balloon.. It worked great until the first windy day

*Treads instead of wheels, incase too much weight is put on the wheels on accident (balloon pops or something along those lines)
*Balloons can be inflated and deflated for certian terrain (rocky it would be inflated more, flat deflated more) or for weather conditions.

The Sand Skimmer, who needs wheels when you can get totally sweet air with the latest in hydrogen powered rocketry.
The balloons hold the fuel aswell as lighten the load of the ship to reduce excess weight and increase air time.

Hello, this is my first sketch posted on conceptart.org
I went for a Tonka type mining vehicle with a tank on top to collect processed gaz and reduce the payload.
Edit: Didn't notice the "Fantasy" thematic, this one is too sci-fi...

I guess I should write something about it.
This is a dwarfen lake carrier. Dwarfes us it to move massive amount of stuff over frozen lakes. to prevent the carrier to break into the lakes. they use giant globefishes they catch in the summertime and stuff with hot air.
