Make it flashy, and not cheesy. Make it your interpretation not jes big ol gates on a cloud! The first thing that came to mind for me was the pandamonium fortress from diablo 2 and like chinese interpretations of heaven, all zu warriors style :P
June 2nd, 2006, 12:07 AM
Wow. Thats a pretty interesting topic. I always like the pandamonium fortress in D2. It was a really strange twist on heaven and hell.
June 2nd, 2006, 08:36 AM
i have a feeling were gonna see some pretty stuff///:bashful:
June 2nd, 2006, 08:45 AM
cool topic! looking forward to participating.
June 2nd, 2006, 04:52 PM
this is not done and i would not like to take this to the polls. Just a learning experience for me. Thanks.
June 2nd, 2006, 09:12 PM
i am not sure if you can call this an environment....
"20 Years without war!" says the speaker: "This should also have played a role, that humanity can enter space for few bucks." Another voice answers. "Yah, you r right, today is a great day, the star of the first tourist-class spaceship will start in a few seconds!"
I looked from the monitor to the TV, a large spaceship which was designed in an oldschool style spitted spoke and the red lights began to blink. A countdown began.
So this is heavens gate, i thought giggling.

Adjusted the levels and some of the values. Final.
The last task for the dead souls wandering the earth is to find heavens gate. Upon entering the gate all knowledge and the purpose of life is acquired. In life ignorance is bliss but in death complete knowledge of the universe brings about the highest form of serenity.
June 4th, 2006, 04:52 AM
To find yourself at the Barrow Gate means you have lived your life to the full and pleased the gods. Your reward awaits you.
June 4th, 2006, 08:15 AM
wow awesome work speculart! really nice mood id say. and well executed. although one thing makes me sort of confused, at first it looked like you just pass through the gate to get up onto the hill, but at second glance im guessing the gate goes into the hill`?
June 4th, 2006, 09:03 AM
speculart...mystical atmosphere...I like it a lot.
June 4th, 2006, 10:25 AM
work in progress...
I hope, I will be able to render such a good atmosphere like speculart did for the final rendering! I only can quote JakkaS :"mystical atmosphere"!
After a cataclysmic event certainly caused by human behaviours, all the life seems to have left the city. But there is still shadows which are waiting to take their last path, grumbling their bitterness and judging their ow, mistakes. If you listen carefully you can hear in a last sad breathe: "if only, we had...."
June 4th, 2006, 11:12 AM
Thanks Jakkas and Stewart. Its a barrow so its a hill with a tomb inside, the scandinavians built them. The idea is, when you die you find yourself at the barrows gate and enter through into the hill where heaven awaits..mostly naked women and stuff. Like you said, real mystical like.
June 4th, 2006, 04:08 PM
Millions of souls make the pilgrimage to Heaven's Gate, Nevada. God opens the gates to heaven once a year and He brings the faithful with him to heaven. Upon entering the light, the blasphemers and unrepentant sinners are instantly vaporized.
June 4th, 2006, 04:14 PM
speculart.. very nice.. possibly you could get more depth and storytelling in the piece by including some human part of it... not sure. Very nice piece! I love the composition.
ferak: hey man, that's a cool beginning! You still have some value and compositional things to work out.. it seems to me you have a completely dominant vertical composition.. I also am not quite sure if the perspective is quite right on the buildings.. they just don't quite seem to fit all in the same world. The street actually seems very empty, the single upturned car helps, but I think you really need more things like parking meters, and newspapers and shops and fire hydrants and streetlights to really establish scale and give the scene believability.
lets see some more entries!!!
June 4th, 2006, 08:15 PM
Blondie. It is strange how you see things differently from one moment to the next. At sijun I saw your piece and couldnt quite make out what was going on. Looked abstract but with a definate light element, possibly trees at the front, a forest. I just knew that I liked the feel of it. This was what ran through my mind. As soon as I got here and saw it, it was immediately obvious what it was. I think perhaps your piece may like the background colour in here better!! Love the mood, it could do with something to make the composition a bit more clear at first view. My eye was stuck down on the fore people, they could be in more shadow from the cliff so you are lead to the pool of light easier. Great, loose image.
Oh and I am still thinking about a human element in mine. It may take away rather than add to that otherworldly feel.

The Seven Portals to the Seven Heavans.
In a mountain range that exists on the edge of the physical plane, where the spiritual touches the tangible universe, stand the gates to the heavans. Seven portals, each a doorway to the realms of the Gods, are said to be the beginning of the soul's final journey. All who wish to be one with the Highest must pass thru a portal, and each portal is meant for different types of beings. A human who is passing on, finding favor with the Ancient Ones, will pass thru "Semilode enlu Gatifee - The Portal of the Third". Seen here to the lower right, The Portal of the Third is decorated with a pattern representing The Prayer Rugs of the Watchers, who keep the portals safe and hidden from the eyes of the Fallen.
June 4th, 2006, 10:49 PM
over achiever..not one but 7...can't wait
June 4th, 2006, 11:42 PM
I've confirmed what I'm doing for this...and it strikes me as funny as one of the non-bible people here, I found an actual description of what the gates to heaven just might look like buried in my resident Baptist's bible when she wasn't looking...
June 4th, 2006, 11:44 PM
Spec, I could feel the warmth of the flames in your piece on the back of my neck. Very nice.
June 5th, 2006, 02:58 AM
Mr Blonde - great textures.
Speculart - Very nice, reminds me of Diablo.
Edit: Wasn't happy with my first entry, so started workin on a different angle. Same concept. Consider this my final...
The Gachlican Monks have developed a way to induce portal expansion with highly focussed particle cannons. They've named this phenomena 'opening Heaven's gate', as it leads to an alternate dimension completely untouched by human and alien lifeforms. The monks now offer a tour service to likeminded people, enabling them to experience the wonders of this destination. The cross-dimensional shuttle is loaded, and for no longer than 10 hours the patrons pass through a summoned portal and dock in 'Heaven'. When the alotted time expires, the command centre will reopen the gate.
This seems to have negligible affect on the environment of both worlds, and strict guidelines have been set up to maintain this situation.
June 5th, 2006, 05:05 AM
added a wip above, I think this will be the only activity I work on, and see how far I can push it between now and Thursday. Of course someone will probably post a 45 minute speed painting and kill me, but hey I guess I can't worry about that!
June 5th, 2006, 02:56 PM
cognition.sb - cool, i like your description
speculart - you have anice feeling to that
I am still working on this, but now i am questioning it more...
Following the road of burning embers to the land of fire, is the only path to The Gates of Heaven. This is a journey of the body and mind. where the weak will pray for an quick death but if you can endure the quest. The rewards are unimaginable.
June 5th, 2006, 03:31 PM
ferak seg, I think a good description for yours would be "well.. this is it, people", cause that's really the feeling I get from it. excellent atmosphere.
mr. blonde, you got a good sense of mass. like real epic.
speculart, it shows you know what you're doing.
Jmac, the supernatural element in your enviorment looks a bit unatural. doesn't blend too well with the magnificently realistic backround.
June 5th, 2006, 04:56 PM
croovman - yeah i am having a hard time with it. i never did a painting like this before so i am learning as i go. any tips would be appreciated
June 6th, 2006, 12:44 PM
Mr blonde: I made some adjustements for the perspective and add some details to make the city much more believable thanks to your advice. Thank you very much.
Croovman: That's exactly those kind of words I had in my mind when I was paiting this image. Can I use "well.. this is it, people" as a title, I find it perfect! Thanks by advance!
June 6th, 2006, 03:41 PM
Impressive round, and a lot of variety! here's mine:
A dig site in the syrian desert revealed an enormous monolith, made of unusual alloys. After months of research small areas of writing were deciphered to reveal that this was refered to heaven's gate by whoever constructed it. Further reading told of a connection between it and the cygnus x-1 black hole. It has been theorised that such dense material would be necessary in creating a stable shield against radiation types, that could be emitted from a black hole.
June 6th, 2006, 07:50 PM
eeee, awsome entries all. Mr.Blonde, it's a stunning piece a little hard to make out at first but once I realised what it was.. awsome. speculart, mysterious mood, nice goin mate.
Here's mine.. (so far)
High on top of the hill lies pathway to heaven; where the winds will guide you to the heaven.
June 6th, 2006, 09:24 PM
Wow! there is some really nice work this week. Bumskee, im really diggin the simplicty of yours. I love how you used nature to portray heaven's gate. There are some really nice textures in there!
June 6th, 2006, 09:33 PM
Bumskee, your environments are always so vibrant and beautiful. I feel like bustin out the picnic basket and chillin.
June 7th, 2006, 02:45 AM
I want go to haven :D....awsome entries guys. Bumskee and Mr. Blonde...great atmosphere.
June 7th, 2006, 02:58 AM
This is great this week! Bumskee, great use of subtle texture in that piece really adds to the serenity. I love the concept too, just take a walk up that hilside and keep on going.
June 7th, 2006, 09:55 AM
fantastic works fellas :}
calling mine done
Gateway for soul filtration, pure souls travel high, dark souls travel low, your destination is predetermined, face the light and enjoy the ride.
June 7th, 2006, 10:03 AM
Eek!... BUMSKEE and SPYROTEKNIK!... These are so inviting, it works so well and make you wanna go to Heaven...
June 7th, 2006, 12:46 PM
Yow! Awesome works!!
Speculart, Mr. Blonde, yAdam, bunskee (jeez, you really have a feel for colours!), Spyro (cool to see you in here!)!
June 7th, 2006, 07:48 PM
Here is my stab at this
above the clouds, they found a mighty wall, which had a hole....to heaven
June 8th, 2006, 12:52 AM
Awesome entries going on here. Environments aren't really my thing but I hope to be participating in this often.
"Those sons of bitches, first they ravaged the earth with their greed for power. Then they found the last hole in the ground with anything decent to drink and built their towers on it. They even had the audacity to call the place Heaven.. "
June 8th, 2006, 06:48 AM
Whoa its getting hot in here. Spyro thats got a real matte painting feel, I like.
Tom that concept is nice. The idea of these little guys building up for years to reach the clouds and then finding a wall with a hole in it, what lies beyond? (well that is what it suggests to me)
Cogs, the second concept is looking good.
Some Guy: what is that at the front? Its driving me potty.
June 8th, 2006, 12:19 PM
bumskee...oh my god...that is a beautiful painting...it has kind of a pre-raphaelite mood. I almost want to see a beautiful woman sitting by the gates...amazing job.
June 8th, 2006, 02:06 PM
SPECULART - thankyou, thats exactly it!!! they have managed to break through to find a huge conctrete dome around their planet, with a few walkways off to the side of the structure to support it. :)
I really need to get better at these environments!!
June 8th, 2006, 03:37 PM
speculart - Hehe yeah did I mention environments aren't my thing? :P Its like a big semicircular gate with all kinds of energy and what not going through it. The white stuff on the sides is sort of like power line and fence that keeps you out of "Heaven"'s territory. Uhh yea it'll get better hopefully.
June 8th, 2006, 04:32 PM
nice work this round is looking good :)
June 8th, 2006, 09:48 PM
This is a link, for a reason
when I saw the topic. this was what came to mind. I know that we are invisioning a grandiose paradise etc. and I know I can't compete in the Huge grandiose arena. these images are beautiful fantasies
But I Prefer to find my paradise close at hand. For obvious reasons it can't go to poll. I don't believe in Valahala, Paradise etc etc. I think our paradise is here on earth if we make it so. so My gates of Heaven are very "earthy" view at your own risque ;P
June 8th, 2006, 10:35 PM
ChaosRocks you are totally insane, LOL. I wasn't sure what to expect when I clicked on the link, but I have to admit it looks like paradise to me!
That being said, my crits would be that it seems a bit loose, and I don't mean the painting style. For some reason the orange is kind of scaring me, if the orange is a sign that all is not well down south, this might actually be Hell!
June 8th, 2006, 10:37 PM
got bored of pink
didn't see much point in finishing it.. it is sketchy. can't go to poll anyway.
but thanks.... I think you got the point.. the orange is a bit much....if I were going to finish it I would glaze with blue to tone it down and who knows..... It's oil paint so I have to wait for it to dry before I can rework it, ... anticipation...
June 9th, 2006, 02:06 AM
Great topic! Got me inspired for my first EOW. Wonderful ideas and work so far!
"Lo, they do call to me, they bid me take my place among them, In the halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live forever". As the honored and noble warriors sail into the great sea, eventually they come to the a place where the waters are calm and they see a new beginning...
June 9th, 2006, 04:58 AM
Bumskee! I love it!
June 9th, 2006, 07:28 AM
hi everyone! heres my humble entry. Loving the stuff in here!
IcyM- thats massive man! Good sense of scale! spyro and speculart those are great! And bumskee aswell. everyone else, keep on inspiring me!
When the humans have all but whiped themselves out, the gates of heaven will open, and the earth will once again be reclaimed by the armies of heaven who once ruled this very place.
June 9th, 2006, 08:23 AM
I'm almost done with mine, don't go to poll yet!!!!!
June 9th, 2006, 10:13 AM
I was on a journey, but I WANT to participate! Don't close the thread, now, PLEASE!
June 9th, 2006, 11:57 AM
Ultimate Security Institution
The USI "Iru Loko" ist the most secure and most known prison of Stedtfeld Systems and is located on Iru II-A on an island, underground and most of the building under sea level. Here the most savage beast and the most dangarous beeings are kept, far away from the puplic society, the USI is the only building on the planet. Built from an alloy only known to some scientists who invented it, the only way to enter or exit is the tower that arises overground for about 100 metres. No prisoner or beast ever escaped, no one ever left dead and also because the tower is the only source of daylight it is called "The Heavens Gate" by prisoners and keepers.
Sorry for not entering with a cool conceptart again T_T
June 9th, 2006, 04:14 PM
Updates above and done!!
June 9th, 2006, 09:27 PM
hey, when is this thread going to be closed? I want to see what the next topic is!
June 9th, 2006, 10:11 PM
Dragon4Lunch, sometimes it takes a while to get the new topic out and the voting started. If you participate then it depends when you finish, if you finish way ahead of time, then voting and new topic will be delayed about a week. If you are rushing to meet the deadline, then voting will start right on time and you are bound to miss the poll. Murphy's law really, it never fails.
June 9th, 2006, 11:00 PM
artiphats Man, Murphy's law is bumming me out!:[ ...:tihi: >:| :dead: :xpld:
June 10th, 2006, 09:09 AM
Cool ur jets guys, Mr. rook'll get to it. of course Im not sweating it, cause my entry isn't going to poll anyway. but still.....
June 10th, 2006, 10:45 AM
Yeah, I don't think Im ready t play with the big boys like that yet.
Bumskee - your piece makes me want to run up that hill. I am in LOVE with your tree/nature/landscape stuff.
IcyM - Love those shapes. Makes me want to peek behind the gates.
June 10th, 2006, 11:13 AM
bumskee thats a beauty
June 10th, 2006, 06:02 PM
no.no.no mine's posted.....its there...it just won't go to poll due to content. I am happy to play with the lions, they don't bite. and one can only try....
June 10th, 2006, 06:08 PM
wow, Tom Garden, i like our concept and how you did it after all.
Reminds me a bit on The Truman show. Great Idea!
June 10th, 2006, 06:50 PM
Update at top
stewart_one: I really like yours, the only thing I would crit on is that your foreground clouds (blue ones) aren't as refined as the rest. But the contrast really brings the eye to the focal point, which usually isn't good to have in the center but it looks like it works here.
Zeitwolf: When I saw yours I immediately thought of the maximum secuirty prison concept thing on the Adult Swim bumps, does anyone else know what I'm talking about? heh
Chaosrocks: Believe it or not, I was thinking about doing the same thing when I first saw this topic. Of course it wasn't going to be quite as literal, hehe. I was thinking thats where life starts thats where it ends as well or something. I guess yours would be more of a heavens gate for a guy, heh.
June 10th, 2006, 08:09 PM
nope Heaven's gate for both......witth any luck...or skill. In case anyone hasn't told you I am of the female persuasion....but thanks you got the idea....philosophical as well as ....welll ....as well as.....physical
June 10th, 2006, 11:47 PM
sorry im at the workshop guys, il try and sort out the eow asap
June 11th, 2006, 02:04 AM
No time to do this one but Im surprised no one picked up on the "inner gateway to heaven" rather than all these "outer gateways".
Many christian based images....
June 11th, 2006, 08:15 AM
mine is a very "inner" gateway...
June 12th, 2006, 09:02 PM
wow, it's Monday evening and still no vote and new topic! Come on, pa-leaze! :)
