This cafe is located on Mars, in a bout 140 years from now. It's a popular hang-out for couples, as privacy is provided, i.e. tables are far apart or even are located in seperate pods. The skylight allows visitors to enjoy the orange/red Martian sky during the day and a, usually very clear, view of the stars in the evening, all while sipping some imported coffee or enjoying the large variety of tea flavours. (Notice the "u" in flavours - this is no coincidence because on Mars, British English prevails. The first mayo(u)r of Mars City had a penchant for British English and made it policy. Thus "U"-keys of keyboards on Mars are often slightly less ledgible than the average keyboard on Earth. This is of course, because the more frequent usage of the "u" on Mars wears off the letter paint, which is still just paint, even in 140 years from now.

Tea, it must be said, is somewhat expensive on Mars, for obvious reasons. Coffee too I guess. Sucks to live on Mars.

Wait, no, it doesn't suck on Mars, because gravity is only one third and walking is so easy on the muscles, that - well, they tend to fade away. Which is bad I guess. Fitness centers are abundant on Mars to make up for this.

One more note about the cafe: It is art deco/50s style inspired and waitresses sometimes complain to their boss about the many stairs they have to take to bring people their coffee. Hot coffe and stairs of course equals trouble, but they get paid well and the cafe is pretty friggin' romantic! Check it out:

Somewhere in the french mountains lies the fanciest cafe the world has to offer. Built by the richest man alive, with prices are soooo off the wall that none have ever been able to afford even the smallest cup of cofee. So the waiter just stands there waiting, for better times to come.

I REALLY wanna vote for Andrew, but SilliKONe, I have to give it to ya. I love the stylisation of Andrews, but yours "feels" like a cafe. Top job

I thought he did a good job portraying this grand interior space, the whole room has great depth.
Would have been eben better if it was done in colors, but since the values work well, it's all good.
Design-wise it's most close to what I have in mind for a cafe.
Just some minor perspective issues on the middle steps, though; those are off.

Andrew's style is stunning, but the star of the image is clearly the tank and not the cafe...

sillikone: close 2nd, great job on the foreground-background depth. But again, you don't see enough of the cafe itself.

stewart one and speculart: cool entries -nicely rendered!

i've been waffling between andrewley's tank cafe, speculart's tea house, and dragon4lunch's art deco cafe.

i have to give it to dragon4lunch. great rendering and environment design. nice attention to details. firm adherance to the concept brief. a color version would have been amazing, but the black and white does give it a nice art deco period feel. i feel the foreground elements - the girl and podium - could have used some punchier values. but she's really cute, so i can overlook that! the detaiiled description is nice as well. vodka martini, please. extra dirty.

andrew ley - this is such an amazing image. it's hard not to linger on it every time i scroll down. amazing lighting, texture, brushwork, and mood. however, the tank monopolizes your attention, overshadowing the cafe aspect.

speculart - this is a very cool illustration. i dig the scene - can feel the cool moist air. it has a nice, loose feel to it...and a soothing color palette. good work on the samurai guard in the fore.

i thought stewartone was on to something with his cafe, but the stucture could have used some more detail. it seems like you used some 3d here, which i wholeheartedly support, but care should have been taken to blend it in more with the rest of the illustration. nice concept and composition though.

my vote goes to silikone. It has a nice feel to it and a grand view. plus its the most cafeish of the lot.

second best is speculart i thinks, i like the view here aswell, although its not so much focus on the cafe. the out of focus flowers are a nice touch.

sillikone youre right about the 3d. i did a very simple model in maya to help with the perspective. and yes i know i got a bit lazy with the integration ;) but it was fun anyways.

SilliKONe. Gonna have to vote for you although the squareness of its composition kindo of gives me pause, but theres no getting past it, a great image. Closely followed by dragon4lunch.
Andrew I think your image is great but may have been hindered by its position at the start of the thread and the length of time it was there, you just get used to images.

What can I say. I know this is environment of the week, but you won me over with storytelling.

Andrew Ley you were my next preference. I love the tank, and I love the way you thought outside the box.

Stewart One, awesome job too, but it feels oh so cold. I get it that you were going for that, but the word cafe for some reason makes me think of cozy and small. It's totally personal.

Those were my top three. Beautiful work.

I love the mood in Dagon4lunchs peice. Of course the rest were great too, although I chopped away a bunch as not really being a "cafe"...

SilliKONe got my vote, because of the incredible mood, but also because the exelent use of color and composition.

Andrew Lew your superior use of rough shapes and costume brushes really shows that you have a LOT of skill and control.

dragon4lunch got my vote. There's such lovely detail in the pic like as the lightened stairway and the aquarium.

I went with Speculart's. I was going to go with silliKONe or Andrew Ley, but the more I scrolled up and down looking at all the different entries, the more I realized I kept stopping on Speculart's and just staring at it. It's got great depth to it, and I love the variety of textures and detail levels. There's parts that are super detailed, and parts that are just hinted at, but it all fits together really well.

Stewart one, I really liked yours, too, but the size of the stairs doesn't seem consistent, and that was kinda sticking out whenever I looked at yours. Nice, though.

Although some were good images I felt that they either didn't capture the brief or express it very well ruling them out.

I was left with a choice between Dragon4Lunch and Andrew Ley, finally I went with Andrew's entry I loved the style although the tank was a touch dominant.

Dragon, to repeat others, the image has great depth and human touches from the individuals within it. I felt it came across too grand to be a cafe, more a stylish bar or night-spot. As a sub note, Dragon, your descriptive text really niggled me, the English variations of words aren't just American 'or' endings with an extra 'u' added - I am just being a pedant though.

many of these are beautiful, I went with Sillikone, base on a rather strange and arbitrary criteria, since so many of these are great evokative environments.. I went with what felt most like a "cafe" a place where working people sit down for a cuppa joe and a greasy snack, and although his is a futuristic view, the people in silohette just have a "taking a breather" feelin to them.

AndrewLey also beautifully drawn, I hate having to scroll to see the cafe, but thats probably just my small and crappy screen

Dragon for lunch-- I love this place its a late night eatery for the Chic Club set, but its too fancy, ( I wish I had your ability to create "Shiny" though)

Chaos you suck, there's no value , no contrast and the cup is "floating" why do you bother.

Stewart One-- very sleek, like the eatery in a really expensive Mall, the steps and the slight wonki-ness of the arches does bug me though

Ryan-- this ois staring to make a really =nice space, the blurry quality is disconcerting. like being a little too drunk and standing in a high placeI would have liked to see the "cafe part snap into focus, leaving the moving blur in the back ground

Zeitwolf- nice idea, seems a little sketchy and you shouldn't have to rely on words to convey your idea

Tom Garden , this is a great idea, did you ever hear the long, draggedout joke about the "Siberian Peach Pie" made me think of this . It basically about a strenuos journey to a remote place for a really special treat. I do wish the tea house and the bridge would snap in to focus a little better. leaving the atmosphere.....atmospheric. BTW keep plugging away, you get a lot more good comments and things taken to poll than I do.

Speculart- again a great image, I want to write the story which goes with this one, way to work the depth of field. not seeing "cafe" though which to me is a home-y comforting thing . and this is a dramatic impressive thing.
