yup, you heard right...
batwoman is a lesbian (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060531/ap_on_en_ot/batwoman_uncloseted)

"This is not just about having a gay character," DiDio said. "We're trying for overall diversity in the DC universe. We have strong African-American, Hispanic and Asian characters. We're trying to get a better cross-section of our readership and the world."

The ironic thing about this is that the original Batwoman and Batgirl were introduced in the 50's as beards for Batman and Robin.

Seems like she's got a good chance of attracting more male readers than she has in the past :P

Are there any gay male superheroes? I don't keep up with these things.

I was thinking about posting this when I saw it on TV yesterday. What a ridiculous report. I wish people would grow up and stop having thier feelings hurt so much over this useless garbage.

Was there a current Batwoman before this one? I hadn't heard of Kathy Kane before (though I did read the trade paperback collection featuring Renee Montoya. Very good). I thought Barbara Gordon was Batwoman originally until she became Oracle. Didn't someone step up after that?

Northstar of Alpha Flight (though I think he was killed off). Gen13's Rainmaker, The Authority's gay couple Apollo and Midnighter, and The Flash adversary-turned-supporting hero The Pied Piper. Recently, a few characters were revealed gay in two Marvel titles, the Ultimate incarnation of Colossus in Ultimate X-Men and Wiccan and Hulkling of the Young Avengers.

Barbara Gordon = BatGIRL. Not the same thing.

Although Barb did have red hair, so I hope that report has a typo about the haircolor of the new Batwoman.

Tully's right. This is a bid to up male readership, not gay readership.

I don't what's there to get all bent out of shape about. It seams like a lesbian character is pretty tame considering there's a leather mask wearing freak who keeps a young boy in tights in a cave in the exact same comic.

Didn't you guys here about those "deleted scenes" from that shitty Batman and Robin movie?

Not really surprizing, people will just take comic characters, kill them, revive them, turn them into cy-borgs, make side storys, make a compleately different story line, etc...

Things like this ( that come according to "whats happening today"), are just to go from "There was a batwoman???" to " LESbian??!!, I gotta buy that comic!!"

So, essentially: comic books = soap operas

Oh, c'mon. That's been the way of it forever.

As for Batwoman being gay... This is news because...? :lens:

The whole superhero mythology is just barely vieled homoerotica packaged in such a way as to make it mainstream. I thought this a funny read, (It's regarding He-Man, but it's close enough): http://www.slate.com/id/2141626/

Can I be more offended at Montoya being the new Batwoman's ex-lover? 'Cause obviously you can't be the best female police officer AND be straight.

I demand more gay male superheroes.

Haha! I know, I know. I knew I might get a little crap for that :)

I love Fantastic Four and X-Men comics. Ben Grimm's my hero.

But, yeah, the whole lesbian thing is a very weak move to up the popularity of a dead female character. I mean, lesbians are totally accepted these days, and especially hot lipstick lesbians. (Those are the straight girls who make out at a party because they'll get more guys that way.) Just like they're trying to get more guys to suddenly find interest in Batwoman.

I really would like to see an already super popular character like Wolverine suddenly admit that he's gay. That would be a super bold move on Marvel's part. Bold but not really smart. It would infuriate everyone because #1 he's already popular and #2 he's male. Double standards. How gay! ;)

quite possibly the hottest thing in the world

although in all seriousness, I wonder if older people would even recognized these icons anymore.

Holy crap, Dave Mazzuchelli is working on that! He was my comic teacher at school! And here I thought he gave up his superhero drawing days... I suppose lesbians have excellent powers of persuasion...

Though I will admit, if DC pumps out a third hawt lesbian character this year for the sake of readership, it'll reach the point of overkill for me.

isn't Sandman gay? or bi? or all sexualties and none?

Cerebus is a hermaphrodite and he's about as macho as they get. raw potatoes and a "buggiduh skodge" for breakfast, biotch!

I guess I could believe that, but I don't think there was any evidence for that in the series.

If someone tyes to use Spiderwoman again in any context, he/she must die in a horrible way......I donīt think I can think in a worst character.....or theme song for that matter.

I don't think you can find spandex for men in a "straight" store so... i would have to say all of them. :)

The last I saw in Astonishing X-Men, Colossus is still attached to Kitty Pride who had his kid.

Actually, Gen13s Rainmaker was female, and although she is a gay superhero doesn't fall into the category of gay male superheroes.

Not to nitpick though ;)

This must have been said before; I scanned the thread, but didn't find anything.

This sounds less like "Comic book writers include wider representation in comic books." and more like "Comic book writers try to express Lesbian comic book hero fantasy."

Good on 'em!
