Check out my new stuff on the last pages... (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2616879#post2616879)

(the below info is about 5 years out of date...)
I'm a game design student, currently working on a class project to build a videogame from scratch. i've been doing some concepts for the game. Some of this is old, some new, i'm moving my old thread from the "sketches" forum to the "sketchbooks" forum, so this is all in order from oldest to newest. Still a little new to conceptart.

June 8th, 2006, 11:10 PM
LukeTores, thanks for the compliments, yeah i did make the refrigerator look a bit ominous. Someone on my team is supposed to be modeling it, and it seemed like the best angle to display the reefer in all it's wonder. thx.

eazym, thx also for the compliment on the tree, yeah i like it too, i still want to do a few things to it, but it's reading alright for now. As far as my characters, yeah, i agree. I'm still trying to self-teach myself anatomy, i got a great anatomy book, and loomis' books, i think once i understand anatomy better my characters will start getting better, till then i just need to keep studin and keep drawin.

Celvin H, that's a pretty good idea to make a cat zombie with it's face falling off kinda like the bag is sagging off it's face in the sketch a few posts up.

thx again guys.

Hi there, thanks for posting in my sb.
I like what I'm seeing here. The organical evironments are really strong, maybe the strongest in this book. I can see that you're working with the perspective and all.
What I think you can do is push the contrast on everyone of the pictures a tad bit. They are a bit blurry and soft right now.
Good luck with it.

Hugs!

June 18th, 2006, 01:09 AM
Nice speedpaint. I was looking over your things, and as far as your figures go I noticed they're all kinda stiff, sans the anatomical problems - that's just something you fix over time. However, if you draw more from life than from pictures, you'll get that natural movement. A picture is just a still - you're forced to replicate an action freeze-framed. If you draw someone from life they're always moving, even if they're attempting to remain still. In compensating for that, you generally produce some more fluid marks. Cool stuff man.

Keep on truckin'.

I think you are onto something on this speedie. Hard vs. soft brushes. It can build contrast in itself. It's kewl to se how you dared to use the hard brushes on some points of it. I think the other speedies could need the same threatment.
Good luck.

Another update,
Pencilator, thx for the advice on the need for contrast. It is true, a lot of my quick sketches do lack a lot of contrast, i think i just need to speed up to move from the block out process to actually refining shapes and stuff. Maybe i get too loose when i block stuff out at times.

Myxomatosis, my anatomy does need work i agree that more figure drawing would fix that, i'll be getting more next semester in school, lets hope it pays off.

Helltaxi, thanks.

Simon.Rain, thanks, any and all compliments are more than welcome.

Pencilator, hi again, yeah the hard brushes to do water was all out of laziness, i mean, i should have used soft brushes on the water but i think i was running out of time and wanted to get it in real quick.

Anyway, thx everyone for the advice and compliments, heres some stuff i did today. More Alaska stuff, i went clam digging at this inlet area below.

thats wierd that we have never known that other has a sketch thread on here. good stuff man, your texture that you get into your pieces is gritty as all hell. ok, time to start some crits.
in your enviroment scenes, you usually toss in a scaly, but it is often hard to see. when you put a scaly in a scene it should be a place that the player is going to be walking or trying to get to, so light that area up a bit more, i noticed in some jungle shots up top. another thing to make them seem a little more like they are part of the pic and not just an overlay is put a little cast shadow so they are grounded in there, right now they are just kinda levitating.
on your architectural stuffs, all of the edges of the buildings and corners are perfectly straight lines, everything else has this wonderful texture to it, why not the edges. chip away at them a little so they are not so sharp.
your speed paintings are awesome, keep it up. someone you should look at on here is m@, he is bomb with that shit.
i think thats all i can remember now off of the top of my head, so keep it up man, you are well on your way.

Some great concepts in here, although I'd work on your digital rendering technique a little. Try to practice the restrained stokes constantly, or else an extremely sketchy technique will confuse and tire the viewer's eyes on trenuous detail.

Oh, you people that draw so well, I'm envious! :).

Try playing with edge contrasts in your speeds. Set hard edges against soft to imply material quality (ie, metal = hard edge, flesh = soft edge). The one with the-guy-that-didn't-read-the-sign has this going for it.

For these (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b337/TheDingusOfSanDiego/figurepaint2.jpg) , maybe try a really big brush for values and reserve the short scribbly strokes for building up texture.

Magicman: thankyou for the advice, after reading what you wrote, i started looking at my digital stuff, then my pencil and i realised that i am a lot sketchier in general with my digital. I guess having that ctrl-z button there makes me just go buck wild painting stuff and makes me think less when i put stuff on the digital canvas. i'll try pay more attention to that now. thx.

Bartovan: thanks for the compliment, i always love to hear those :teeth:

Meatsworthy: i'm really going to try and use the bits of advice you gave me, both were good, sound advice. i never thought of using hard brushes/soft brushes for the silhouettes. I usually just use hardness and softness solely for shading the cast and form shadows, when i do the silhouette i've never really gave any thought to whether the silhouette deserved a hard or soft edge, i've always just went for it.
Also, what you said about my figure painting i'll use too. i was sort of lost as to which kinds of brushes to use or how best to approach it. it was my first time digitally painting from a live model and i was going back and fourth between brushes and jumping all around between brush types and didn't feel like i knew the best way to approach it but yeah, using a big brush for the big shapes and saving my lines unless i really need them for texture is something i'll definately try. thanks. :confident

In other news, heres the last sketch of the day. it's what i consider my first real, honest attempt at designing a vehicle. it's pretty self explanitory what this vehicle does, i got the idea for it from my page of thumbnails a few posts up:

More Sketchbook pages from today...i'm determined to get better at anatomy. i've never really gotten into an anatomy book until recently, i picked up bridgman's, his "constructive anatomy" book is brilliant.

This is something i am working on for a class, not sure really what to do with it. i'm sort of struggling trying to work out the colors at night. i know that during the day, things get lighter and less saturated as they get farther away, i'm guessing the same happens at night except for the "getting lighter" part. i don't know. here's what i have so far, any feedback would really help.

Elisa: thankyou for the compliments. Yeah, i highly reccomend doing the thumbnails, whenever i can't think of anything to draw, i've been referencing back to those, and they are a great way to inspire yourself.

Myako: thanks, yeah i've been trying to get more into enviros lately. i have found that i do a lot of nature scenes...i need to practice with cities and industrial stuff...so yeah, i'll keep on that.

Pawlack: I used your advice on the castle, i tried to punch up a few of the lights, let me know what u think.

I worked a little more on the tower scene a few posts up. It was a project for one of my classes where I had to design a loading screen.

I'm definitely seeing some improvement here. Best thing so far for me are the pencils. Figures can use more attention, but i believe that's just practise practise practise. Like those last figure studies, they're getting there. Watch the balance on them. With the colored ones, i don't get why you often have such such a gray, dark BG. More contrast man, more colour. Ah well, i've ranted enough, not like i'm an expert. Keep on knockin'!

Darkchild - Thx for the comments. The hippo skull was fun to do, i drew it right after i was about 4 inches away from a live hippo. it was pressed against the glass and i could see every crack in it's skin. Those things are incredible, their skulls are a sight to behold too.

Walnut - I agree, my figures do need some work. As you can see i am practice, practice, practicing. i drew figures for about 5 hours today...i could do it about 10 hours a day, i need that practice so bad. I'll try pushing the contrast too, it's something i've been working on, it's been awhile since i really got into the figure, i think once i get more confident drawing it, the contrast will come.

Trevor - Your comment made me really want to practice enviros. I think i might be able to land an enviro job if i just practiced a little more, and exercised a little more variety from the usual landscape scene and did some urban or futuristic stuff. thx for the comment.

Spade - Thanks for stoppin by. Seriously, i recommend everyone try a page of thumbnails, they are indespensible. If you're ever out of ideas, put together a page of thumbnails and use them for inspiration when your at a block.

Uziel - U and Walnut couldn't be more right about me needin figure practice, i got a little today as you can see in the pictures attached to this message. Some of them turned out alright, better than yesterday's bridgeman studies, i still need more practice tho...

Guitarjames - I really appreciate the comment about me improving since the first post. I havent really noticed but since you said that i looked back and i have improved a little. thanks for stoppin by.

In other news; Due to popular recommendation by my peers here at conceptart, i did some figure studies today:

I just realised that i missed some people from about a week ago that i never replied to in the flurry of inspiration i had.
Van: thanks for stoppin by, i looked at your stuff, you have a killer sketchbook, i'm lovin your portraits.

Gringoloco: the variation of strokes i use is probaly just my scattered nature coming out in my drawing, my idea of "just keep the pencil moving on the paper" i'm glad u like that variation though, i never really noticed it.

Nallen: thx man, yeah i've been doing pencils a little bit longer than i've been doing digital. i like my pencils more too. sometimes. sometimes i hate my pencils...

Jake: Thx man, i saw a gnomon video with feng zhu who was saying that your drawing is only as good as your silhouette. I'm new to the idea, but after hearing that i'm a firm believer that silhouette is something to be aware of.

JoeHell: Thx for pointing that sketchpage out, that one is one of my favorites. especially the baby with the old man head. The gun in his hand is jacked up but i like everything else about it. By the way, you have a badass sketchbook, thanks for checkin mine out.

Andy-P- thx for all the love. i'm workin on that anatomy and figure, that's my next big project is to study hardcore in anatomy and the figure. keep truckin'

Sabe - i like compliments like a fat kid likes cake. or rather i like compliments like anyone likes cake. thx for stoppin by.

Chiko - thanks, the thumbs were fun to do, u should try some.

ArcoNL: thanks for stoppin by. You have some absolutely killer anatomy studies in your sketchbook by the way.

I think you should widen your themes. It seems you only like grossed out deformed bodies and decay. Your tentacles are by far the best piece, imo. With your limited subjects here you sort of only fit into a Doom universe, so you'd have limited options of companies where to apply, should you for example want to work as a concept artist. Then again, maybe you already work as one, then what I just wrote is a little silly, but it's meant as a suggestion. Great work on those tentacles!

Nice life drawings, great to hear you're out of that art slump. It is no fun.

Edges are coming along nicely, the art of war loading screen certainly feels solid. For that, perhaps the torches and campfire could be brighter and warmer.

I haven't done much night paintings, but my guess would be to fade saturation and contrast in the distance, and consider the amount of ambient light (from the moon). Pushing the darks towards the color of the horizon shouldn't be far off for creating that effect... since the horizon band should technically be the band of atmospheric haze being lit by ambient light - the same thing that causes fading and things looking blue in the distance during the day. Well, that is my theory anyway

Along with j a k e's crits on the enviroment, I'll add fog up the horizon to add a little depth as well.

Isair: thx for the props. Yeah, i'm actually not satisfied with my knowledge of perspective; i was just looking at a few other sketchbooks with nice vehicles and urban landscapes and realised i need to nosedive into perspective so i can maybe get half as good as them. Also, i looked back at my figure sketches and, yeah, they are a little bit contoury, i'll keep in mind what you said next figure drawing class i go to. thx for the advice.

j a k e: your comment made me go back to the piece and fix it up. thx for the crit. i love them crits.

Meatsworthy: same as jake, your advice made me want to go back to that "silly little environment" as i called it. I tried adding more depth to it, added a little bit of background, a few clouds. I'm planning on fixing up the art of war one some time this week; i'll probably fool around with the background, and maybe add fog like you said; i also might do an overlay and add some texture to the buildings in the foreground. thanks for the crit.

Fishspawn: Thx for all the kudos.

Myako: Thx for the crit, check out the updated sky (below).
Tell me what ya think. Thx for stoppin by.

And due to popular suggestion, i went back to this one and fixed it up a little bit. thx again for the suggestions.

I agree with Magic Man. You've got some great concepts and your environments are well lit and the choice of colors is good, but your strokes are way too rough, and kill the effect. Try looking at stuff by sparth or Craig Mullins to see how you can stay rough but still have a tight render.

The proportions for the second look much better, though the first has a more interesting feel. More human/sub human, whereas the second is more hippo-y (the birds don't help, lol). to go with more of a crawler style, you might try a two part pic, one with it out of the water (like the post), and one with it IN the water. problem is, again, it would resemble a hippo. unless of course that is what you wanted...

the forground arm is nicely planted, but the weight of the overall creature looks like he is falling foreward, or off to the side. Also try extending your torso down inbetween the back legs.(it may help with the weight). when rendering the forground hoof keep it in perspective, and try pointing it a little outward( just see how it looks).

Wow, i've gotten a lot of visitors since i last replied...

Banshax: thanks. Yeah i like doin animals. i've been hitting up the zoo lately, and i'm realising theres some cool animals out there...i especially like the bugs.

Orionterron99: I almost forgot to put the clouds in, then i remembered the last environment i did, the one of the house on the hill, i forgot to put clouds in and everyone told me "it needs atmosphere". the clouds are a photoshop brush by the way.

Cobi: The crawler thing...my idea i guess came from a bunch of water creatures melded into one. i was lookin at a hippo, then water buffalo, then none of them were muscular enough so i looked at a belgian blue bull (pretty cool genetic deformity man has made out of a bull) and yeah, that's about how i came up with it. thanks for stoppin by. Oh, and stay away from that new-metallica by the way (load, re-loaded, and st.anger) those albums will de-evolve you.

Orionterron99: i took your advice, i swapped out the heads (though i still feel i need to tweek it a little more) It did look too much like a hippo. thx for the crit, artzealot loves crits. tear my stuff apart.

Stimpack: thanks for the props. you need to get back into conceptart dude, no one from our school concept arts it up, it would be a sweet way for us all to keep in contacts and track our improvement after we all graduate. I'm sure no one will give a bull-shoot if you post a 3d render here and there in your thread either. keep on truckin'

Crazyace: I took your advice on extending the torso, i'll mess with the hooves too, this thing isn't done

Sith: Thx a lot for the compliment, i'll work on them faces, i guess i need to stop with the cartoony stuff, or ditch the mechanical pencil i love so very very much. thx for the advice.

And....continued work in progress on this weeks creature of the week. it still needs a few more tweeks, i'm always open to crits. by the way...i know the background on it sucks, i did it in about 6.4 seconds

FRIGGIN A! LOVE the changes man! especially the monocular vision! personally it resembles a sick fusion of man, beast (i can see the bull/buffalo in some of the muscle structures) and monster:) and the b/g helps it immensely. one last nit-picky thing, nix the knuckle walking... actually no... keep the digits, but i would suggest adding hoof-like growths on the knuckle joints, it would add a bit of consistancy with the back feet, but by keeping the hands still have the eerie 'this thing might have been human' factor. just sumpin to think about.

Nice sketchbook! Your pencil skills are very strong, and your knowledge of form as also good. As far as crits go, the word that jumps into my mind is color! I think you need to take on giant leap out of your comfort zone and apply some big, bold, sometimes ugly colors to your canvas. For inspiration on vivid, striking, experimental color work, I like to go to Idiot Apathy's sketchbook: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=56810. Though, obviously, color is something I need to work on as well.:rendered:
I liked seeing you put the knowledge you gained from your bug sketches to work in designing that hopper vehicle. I also liked your thumbnails, the "Art of War" environment, and that one sketch of a dog in a hazmat suit or something.
Nice work! Just constantly push your boundaries.

I like the core shadowing you added... but i can't decide which of those necks i like better. (cuz, you know, your existance is based off of my validation ;) ) There's also something.... off with the hand and the hoof, both on the left side. I'd say turn them both out a little more (what would that be, counter-clockwise?) dunno if thats just nit picking or anyone else see's that... otherwise it's quite nice.

THe Ideas and Imagination put into your work blows my mind.
I especially like the old man with the magic hat.
Only crit I can give is that your female figures look a little mascualine in some of their features. Mainly in the Face. A good thing to remember is that a smaller chin is an indicator of oestrogen, whilst testosterone levels are indicated by a larger chin/jaw.

Orionterron99, thx for stoppin by and thanks for tha props. i tried doing that thing with the knuckles, but it made the human arms look out of place. it made them look funky, so i just stuck with normal hands, but i gave it a shot.

Shinryu: thanks, yeah most of my figures move after about 5 minutes. some of the ones i've posted are long poses, maybe i need to stop figure drawing with a mechanical pencil, i've been meaning to get some conte crayon.

Crazyace-thx for the crit dude. i used that reference and fixed it up a little, let me know what ya think

Moai - thanks for stoppin by. yeah, i think your absolutely right about me needing to be more experimental with my color. i just started working with color this year, i've always just done the whole pencil, charcoal gig. i'll give some crazy color a shot...it might not come today, or tomorrow. i have to find the right piece to go crazy on.

Orionterron99, thx, yeah the core shadowing was a suggestion of a buddy of mine, so he takes part credit on them core shadows. i left the hand how it was, i've messed with that hand so much, i'm seeing hands when i close my eyes. i did however add background, let me know what ya think

Camsyko - i never noticed that about women's faces. i guess on average they do have a little smaller chins, cause women with big broad chins look like dudes sometimes now that i think of it. i need to do some hardcore face study, that's one of my weaknesses. i'm tryin to get overall anatomy down first though. thx for the crit.

nice usage of refrence, the creekcrawler lo0ks 100 times better than when you started. all it needs is some spots/freckles just something to break up the skin pigmant. (try this out) make a new blank layer, and put some spots on the monster, then just turn the layer to multiply, or lower the opacity.
good work.

Nice figure stuff, and thumbnails... I guess I should start doing those too!

The recent COW seems to me to sit awkwardly on the BG. It might be because the creature looks strongly lit while the BG is overcast... but I'm not sure, it could just be the difference in rendering style throwing me off.

Hi, Artzealot! Had fun browsing through your SB. Youve got a lot of cool stuff. My favourite is the update from august 12 (woman in green with her back to us). Very nice. The Cow is good, he looks like a cross between a hppo and a cow with a touch of cyclops, but something about the very human front paws bothers me, it doesn't seem to fit the picture as a whole. The body structure seems to indicate that he walks on all fours, in which case, he would have evolved hoof like his two hind legs. Now if he was walking upright like a gorilla... Yeah, nitpick, nitpick. :) Keep up the great work. Insect bug locomotive rocks btw.

Sabe2003, couldn't agree with u more. i wish i had figure drawing 6 hours every day.

Orionterron99, thx, the hoof hand thing is still a good idea, maybe next week's creature, if i do it.

Camilografix, i didn't notice till you said, but your right, it does need a little work on the outline of it, it needs sharpened up a little. thx for the crit.

Crazyace31, i'm gonna try that. i'm going to maybe play around with some overlays and see if i can get some cool effects. he is a bit smooth skinned. Being the size he is, he probably would have a bit rougher skin

Kian, thx, yeah the thumbnails are my inkblot tests i use for inspiration when i can't think of anything.

Banshax, i agree man, i need to get hardcore into that life drawing, i wanna be pro, and life drawing is the answer.

Meatsworthy, i knew he didn't fit, but i couldn't put a finger on what it was till you said that. i think i do need to change the lighting. i will probably change the background to something a little more dramatic to match that of the creature. maybe make it early sunrise or dusk or something.

Lukavi, thx for stopping by. you arent nitpicking, i like it when people nitpick my stuff, nitpick it to death, i learn alot that way. I think i may redesign the creature of the week sometime but not right away. i wanted to give him the ability to pick things up with his hands and inspect them, maybe i should try some articulated pincier hooves or somethin or perhaps i will try your idea of making him able to walk upright also, like a gorilla. thx for stoppin by, come again and nitpick all you want, nitpicking is more than welcome here.

-In my art history class we've been learning about modernism and abstraction, and i decided to create a sort of abstract of my own. i was also halfway practicing drawing without "scratching" my lines in (a bad habit i have) i'll probably color this and repost it sometime. i can think of a bunch of ways i'm thinking color might really bring it to life.

J a k e: thx dude. yeah i guess my digital sketches are improving a bit. I'm growing to like digital the more i do it. oh, and i fixed the hand; i knew it was there but didn't think anyone would notice...

Fooxoo: thanks. yeah i have issues with color now and then. through the critiques i've been getting on here, i've been paying more attention to my color use. I'm still getting a feel for the transition from strictly graphite to color. thx for the crit.

Myako - Thanks. yeah in that one i was trying to fade the background out and draw more attention to the creature. i'll keep workin, dont worry.

Zynic - i fixed them clouds in that speedpaint. i still want to tweak them a little more...thanks for stoppin in.

Vorace - I'm thinking of maybe doing another page of slimy things. i'll make sure and make them nice and sticky. thanks for stoppin in. By the way, i'm lovin your sketchbook, u have some sweet digitals

Orifice- thanks for all the props man, i'll keep up with those thumbnails, they're pretty fun to do.

Blanquish - Thanks a lot for all the compliments dude. I'm glad to be getting approval on the level of contrast in my stuff. I've been struggling to find the right amount of contrast in my digitals lately. thanks for stoppin in.

Ubar_303 - Yeah, i have been watching quite a few gnomon videos lately. I think my favorite style of putting together the environments is how ryan church does it, he's badass. Thanks for checkin out my stuff.

Good stuff overall. Your concept drawings are neat. My crit is for your digital paintings. In some of your paintings, the edges get a bit blurry and messy looking, but that might just be the fact that these are sketches. Another one with your paintings is that they look like they're hanging too much in the midtones, try to create more contrast. That's the annoying thing about computers though, monitor settings make everything look different compared to another... so on your comp it probably looks different.

With that mountainside speed, the mountain is well done. My feeling is the shadow and light values are too close together. Clouds are pretty hard to paint on their own, and so is foilage... for those, some reffed speeds should help.

Your concepts are amazing and very creative. Your sketchwork is real nice too...I noticed you use crosshatching quite a bit, do you find that to be the best/quickest way to add value shading?

I'm not familiar with crosshatching or hatching, as I don't use it and prefer long, tedious scumbling and tortellione sticks for finished pieces. I think with new classes coming up soon, the assignments are going to start calling for shading and I am going to have to try hatching.

I like the tentacles alot, the meat gun was amazing. The silhouettes I am just being introduced too in school, that is a really neat technique.

I notice you use a lot of grey in your work, which, when used with color, tends to pull down a piece. Maybe you could try using high chroma dark color and work out of it using linear dodge...that's what I usually do for quick pieces, but they don't have us doing digital in school yet.

yo! thanks for swinnging by and i will update that fatmonster thing asap!
one thing to remeber when doing your speed paintings, is the 1,2,3 read rule. 1.forground high detail and contrast
2.less detail but still some sharp edges and more medium gray value w/highlights and shadows
3. hazzy/fuzzy less focus rare accented edges
(your doing awsome on the last 2, and even thought it is a speed paint try to capture the 123read) you capture this very effectivly "June 24th, 2006, 08:42 PM " its on the 1st page. i think that is why it is so succesful.

Darktwin- thanks for stoppin by, and thanks for the compliments, still waitin on that crit.

Spats - thanks, i definately will keep it up.

Fishspawn - Yeah i've thought about doing selfportraits to help improve on my faces. only mirror i have is the bathroom mirror, so i'll have to get some kind of portable mirror or something and start bustin out the self portraits.

Meatsworthy - yeah, i'm strugglin with those clouds. i tried making a cloud brush, and still am not really satisfied with them. i'll have to google some cloud images and fix that one up one of these days.

Ladyhydralisk - I actually tried that linear burn thing on this piece i'm posting right now. i think i need to get the hang of it, but it's a cool little technique. Also, u asked about crosshatching, yeah the main reason why i am all about crosshatching is because i mainly use mechanical pencils, and in my opinion it's the best way to lay in value with a mechanical pencil. i feel that i need to start using "artists pencils" but havent gotten around to it yet. i hate having to sharpen my pencil.

Lord Rabboon - thanks.

Darktwin - I've been keeping that in mind lately when i draw. Still workin on them wacom skills.

Cup of Joe- Thanks dude, i'll keep at it.

Crazyace31- i never really thought of it as a 1-2-3 kind of thing. I'll give it a shot.

Richkid - the zoo sounds cool for thursday. i suppose i could just call you up...i feel like i'm typing up a myspace comment...yeah, about that shadow, your right, the light does look more like it's hitting it from the front than from the creatures right side, which is what the shadow is currently indicating. it was supposed to be from the right side, but that didn't really give it enough contrast and i had to remedy that, and i dont think i fixed the shadow. i'll fix it and re-upload it to the same file. probably by the time you see this message it'll be fixed.

Ladyhydralisk - i love it when people say that about my work "that is disgusting", i always take it as a compliment. thx.

Sith - thx dude. yeah i'm thinking that, that abstract is going to be the next one I color. I'm just going to make it a mess of beautiful multicolored glistening flesh.

Pawlack - thanks. yeah I want to do more anatomy studies, i am of the belief that you can never study anatomy too much. well i guess there is a point where if you get too obsessed you reach the point of where you're overly scientific and not creative, but i'm pretty sure i dont have to worry about that. anyway, thanks for stoppin by.

Fishspawn - I did actually remedy the "no mirror for self portraits" thing. i've just been taking pictures of myself with my digital camera, and drawing in my sketchbook from those. i still have to scan those pages. i just moved into my new place and havent set up my scanner yet, but they're on the way.

Hey man, thanks so much for the kindness over at my
sb. You've got some really sweet designs (the thumbnail silhouettes and Hopper were outstanding).

With this last enviro, I think the value structure can be increased(ala your Venice scene). The lighter tones in the back can be even lighter, while the tree up front here can be really super dark. It'll pop it more and give that greater sense of depth. Also, perhaps a more definitive and less ambient light would help.
Keep up the great work man.

Orionterron99 - yeah i was gone for awhile. pretty sure i'm back now, and should be comin up with something new daily. i guess my stuff does look a little like clive barker. i have seen most of his movies, but i wouldn't really say i'm influenced by him, unless maybe subconciously or somethin. thanks for stoppin by, new speedpaints are on the way, they're gonna come slowly cause now i'm tryin to hone my perspective skills and it's slow goin on that.

Myako - thanks. i might add clouds to that one, i was more into tryin to get the enviro out quick and seem to have forgotten an atmosphere.

Fishspawn - thanks, glad u like the sword and shield guy, he's totally new subject matter for me. As for the thumb fish creature thing, i think i might color that one...

Helzon - I really did listen to what you said about pushing the darks in front darker and lights in the foreground lighter. I was workin on that piece you mentioned and photoshop crashed when i was almost done, so i'll have to go back and try again, but thx for the advice.

OldNoobie - thanks noobie.

Dkounios - thanks alot. Yeah the tree and the tentacles area few of my favorites too. The zombie lady a little less so, being one of my earlier digital drawing, but anyway, thx for stoppin in.

And, i'm back to work (school) this time i'm sorta doing concepts with a sinbad-esque theme to them. this one is a work in progress, it's a roc (a giant bird that sinbad finds when shipwrecked on an island. He ties himself to the birds leg using his turban to try and hitch a ride on the bird, off the island but finds himself in worse trouble than before) Anyway, i plan on coloring him. Also, the exact reason why i drew the coffee shop lamps was to put them in the library in my head so i got an idea of what some manmade lightsources look like when i do enviros. thx for stoppin by.

Listing - i don't know how to say this; i didn't really understand your comment about concept design and the part about outstanding structural misunderstandings.

hey, there's some kickass thumbs there !
cool!

makes me wanna go and do some environment thumbs :P

on the last one, is that a photo in the back? (left and right side)
it looks very good but shows lack of tech. habit... looks like you faded the background with a small airbrush and didnt go all the way to the edge to the right... (as an example)

bah i'm just rambling (and not even succeding at that haha)

I really like the pencil sketches from a few posts back... they show a great knowledge of forms in space. You might want to incorporate more of that hatched/rendered feeling into your digital work, as a lot of it seems more planar.

Keep on rocking!

Some of these thumbnails are good value studies...

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b337/TheDingusOfSanDiego/thumbnails4.jpg

Especially column 2, row 2 and column 1, row 3. The values are working really well, keeping the elements seperate and readable... they create a lot of depth too. Try not to lose these "big value" relationships when doing the full painting.

If it helps, try to go up and down about 5% - 10% in brightness to turn forms within the each big value. Highlights and accents come last, taking care not to break the big value relationships by overdoing them.

Hurricane: do you mean is it a photo in the foreground or background? The way i put that last environment together, was i blocked out the foreground and background colors, then did an cut out an overlay of a photo in the foreground for colors and went into it with custom brushes/freeze transparent pixels/more brushes to get the texture in the foreground. the background is all hand painted though. You are right about the edge of the foreground though, i was using a quickmask and brushes and did loose a bit of the transition from foreground to background, i'll have to fix that. Anyway, thanks for stoppin by my SB

MattiasA - thanks dude, i always like gettin props.

EKU_11 - thanks dude, yeah i'm tryin to improve on my environments. also, i think i may color that fish thing, it seems to be a hit.

Gryphon - That's a really good idea u had, i'll have to try that in my digitals.

Fedezz - thanks a ton, glad u like it all. i guess my digis have improved a little, i give all credit to the wacom3 tablet.

Meatsworthy - Thanks for the advice. I see what you mean about the big value relationships, i wasn't thinking it when i painted it, but now that you point it out, that is what those two have going for them. I'll try and keep in mind the thing you said about keeping values within 5-10% of what they were in the thumbnail. When i painted the last enviro from the thumb i feel like it did loose a bit of the value range i had in the thumbnail toward the edges of the foreground, i wasn't thinking of keeping it within 5-10 percent, i was just happily painting away. thanks for stoppin in my SB and thanks for the advice, i value it much.

And...i've been playing around in painter a little bit, still feelin a bit stiff compared to photoshop. heres what i got:

Hey, thanks for the comment on my sketchbook!

I like your sketches and ideas (especially that monster guy with the electrical outlet on his butt), and I'd really like to see what you can do with just lines and less rendering...
And that may just be my animator-background talking, since I, shamefully, get completely lost when I have to render a form instead of just describe it with lines. Just something to mix it up!

Really nice stuff here.

Oldnoobie - thanks.
Zarett - I actually have been attempting to do what u suggested in my hand drawn sketchbook. I've have to get 8 pages of props drawn in my sketchbook for one of my classes and i have been trying to do what you say and just use lines and it's been actually savin me some time. I've been tryin to really nail the silhouette of the form instead of rendering into it since u suggested that. anyway, thanks.
Cup of Joe - yeah i might go back to that one and mess with it a little, it's still hanging at 90% finished. thx for stoppin by.

very nice sketches and a nice coloring job on the last one, however, the perspective is a little off which I'm sure you are aware of. A suggestion (not sure if I am correct or not), draw each plane as a square in perspective, sketch the oval within the squares, then sketch in the outline of the object. hmmm ... I'm confusing myself :(

Keep going with the studies! :)

I wanted to correct what I suggested earlier. What I meant to say was go up and down in 5-10% steps so that you can be careful not to stray too far from the base value, not keeping the values within 5-10 from base. They may end up having a large difference... step back often and evaluate if you have to go up or down some more.

I like everything I see in here, the sketch pages are really imaginitive but you can tell you're doing some studies as well. nice.

as far as the painting goes keep in mind what people responded well to when you posted your thumbs up about halfway through this page. High contrast stuff works really really well, and I can see a few of your pieces getting caught in a lot of midtones.

the 3d paintover is gorgeous, btw.

wow bro you have improved so much from page one! thats almost cliche to say on these forums (props to the idea of CA.org!!) but seriously you have. its great to see your newest round of concepts. very cool work bro! the spectre king concept is really cool and that paint over is amazing! my only suggestion is maybe drop the background on your king. i dont think it does anything for the image and is a bit distracting. on you're paint over, i think just a TAD bit more work on the lighting will really make that thing shine like hell, the textures and everything else are great though. the tech drawings are pretty good, just keep ref'in stuff and at some point you'll be a mechanical drawing machine once you put enough bells and whisles in your vocab!

keep working hard!

Daraf: Yeah, once you start doing stuff in the game design degree where you're actually using your creativity to make stuff creatures and worlds and stuff; that's when it starts getting fun, just stick with it.

Easy Tiger! : your very right about those thumbnails sticking in the midtones. i didn't even really notice till u mentioned it, but yeah, i'll remember that next time i'm doin thumbs. thanks for pointin that out. by the way, nice sketchbook :hatsoff:

Ryan DeMita: thanks, i love hearin stuff like that. sometimes i get so caught up in what's new that i'm workin on i don't look back at old stuff to monitor my improvement. Yeah, i think your right about that background. it's a little distracting. i might go back and fix it, but i probably wont try doin something like it again. someone else over on the creature of the week forum said the same thing about the textury background, that i shouldn't do it again. i don't think i will. :) thanks for stoppin by.

Hey Art Zealot

Many thanx for replying to my book.

I'm really liking these speedpaints, though something about them is bothering me and I don't know what.... I think do a few life studies from photos or so to get the feel for how light works against a surface, especially exterior surface. Try to stay away from black as far as you can. This is easy with landscapes, because there is always some king of fog or haze. Just fill in the shadows with the various shades of the colour of the fog.

Else than that there are looking fine and your making really good progress. have some stars mate.

ciao!

yo wes, lookin good. you have been progressing with leaps and bounds over the last couple of months, and with a fast progression there are always some things that get over looked. you have a strong grasp on speed painting and rendering, but there are some fundamentals that are being sacrificed. slow down and down some anatomy studies for your characters. it looks like every time you go to do a person you decide half way through to make it a monster. monsters are cool but lets see some people. with your enviros, do some lighting studies. put in some cast shadows, the way they wrap over forms will bring depth and life to your peice.

looking good, just go back to the things that should be your foundation.
